Personal Safety Check

Personal Safety Check test 1-1

The news is full of safety recalls on all sorts of vehicles. We expect auto makers to produce vehicles with the highest level of safety possible. That’s a pretty tall order with all the technology involved in getting one to run. We had fewer problems when windows rolled down using a handle and doors unlocked using a key. I’m not so sure that cars weren’t safer without airbags as well. Anyway, manufacturers are doing what they can to ensure that our cars don’t kill us, but that’s not what this article is about.

Crossing the U.S.

Crossing the U.S. test 1-1

With all the travelers on the roads for the holiday, I wondered just how long it would take, if I lived on one side of the country and my dinner was on the other, to make it in time to eat. The easy answer is about 48 hours. This assumes that I have someone else to share driving duties and we stop only for gas. Not the best trip, if you ask me. If I want to sleep in motels, I could do it in four or five days as long as I drive 12 hours a day. Still not ideal. But if the journey is to be part of the fun, I have to allow seven to 10 days before I can sit down to my turkey and dressing.

Mercedes Benz Unveils CLA Shooting Brake test 1-1

Mercedes Benz has taken the veil off of its highly anticipated CLA Shooting Brake. The CLA is not only the succesor to the larger CLS Shooting Brake, it mixes the flowing lines of a four-door coupe and a pratically sized cargo area in a relatively small package. That will give the CLA a stylish niche in the compact luxury segment.

Surviving Holiday Road Trips test 1-1

Over the river and through the woods, to Grandmother’s house we go; the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow.

Perhaps horses can navigate dependably at this time of year but it seems to be a little more difficult for people driving gas-powered sleighs.

BMW Considers Production Increase To Meet High Demand test 1-1

Amid a surge of demand for its hyperefficent i8 supercar, BMW is considering a significant increase in production. The unexpected levels of demand have emerged following the car's launch to dealerships, and BMW wants to increase inventory to maintain the present level of momentum that the i8 has initiated among consumers.

Pretty Pweeese! Volkswagen Golf R 400 May Be Headed For Production test 1-1

Every car nut loves a hot-hatch. They handle like a sports car, have plenty of power, yet they still offer all the practicality found in a normal hatchback. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the recognized standard bearer, but the 395hp Volkswagen Golf R 400 takes that recipe to a whole other level. And it may be headed for the production line.

Winter Survival In Your Car

Winter Survival In Your Car test 1-1

The news from New York these last week was frightening to me. I’m a Florida native and I have to admit that with our temperatures in the 30s at night and barely reaching 60 during the day, I was freezing. I’m sure readers in New York are outraged, but my blood in as thin as water and not designed to deal with anything lower than 70 comfortably. Even so, I love cold weather and look forward to temperatures chilly enough to warrant hot chocolate and flannel. I started to think of what people do when they are stranded in their vehicles in a snowstorm. This isn’t likely to happen to me, but it does happen. Do people up north prepare for it? Do they have emergency kits in their cars? What’s in them?

Warning: Avoid Telephone Poles in Minivans test 1-1

At some point in our lives most of us reach the time to have a family. Time to stop hitting the bars on Friday night and trade in the snazzy red two-seater for a “family car”. For a large percentage of parents that means a minivan. There are lots of choices in this vehicle that offers room for children, friends, and overnight bags, as well as soccer equipment and groceries. But do they offer safety? Being the epitome of the family car, one would think so. The latest tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) throw that assumption into question.

There are certain names that can be mentioned only in reverential tones. In the automotive world, the name Carroll Shelby would fit into this category. He was born in 1923, and he devoted six decades to the craft of automotive design.
