Sebring Historic Fall Classic 2010

Sebring Historic Fall Classic 2010 test 1-1

We have covered a lot of "Classic" events lately, the Sebring Historic Classic being one of the most exciting. Vintage racing machines from all eras converge on Sebring International Raceway this weekend for some "friendly" racing. This event is labled as an exhibition, but you wouldn't know it watching the action on track. Yesterday's action included Trans-Am Mustangs from every decade, 60s, 70s, 80's, and 90s. Porsches of all varieties were in attendance, as well as the big surprise, two Champion Audi R8s. Their presense not advertised prior to the race, I never imagined I would be given a chance to photograph these cars on track.

Here we have a brief teaser gallery; many more pictures, video and information from the 2010 Sebring Historic Fall Classic throughout the week.

Porsche Sells Out the 911 GT2 RS test 1-1

When your car is described as the "fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche," you wouldn't figure that you'd have much trouble selling it. And indeed Porsche hasn't had any problems selling the car that it describes that way—the 911 GT2 RS, which it introduced in the spring. The car made its auto show debut two months ago, and thanks to pre-ordering, all 500 models have already been spoken for. Eager car fans hoping to brush their knuckles across that contrasting matte black hood will have to do so on someone else's GT2 RS.

Danish Fury: Zenvo ST1 Heads to the States For $1.2 Million test 1-1

The world really needs more million-dollar supercars, don't you think? Sure, most of us will never get the chance to even see one out on the streets, let alone drive one, but it's just nice to know that such exotics are there should we ever have a flash of world-changing brilliance or run of lottery-winning luck. Announced last year, the Zenvo ST1 is an impressive-looking Danish supercar with over 1,000 horses. The company announced that a percentage of the 15 models that it plans to build will be headed to North America at a price over one million dollars.

The Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival: The Classics, Pt. 1 test 1-1

We've shown you muscle cars and hot rods, now the classic vehicles get their moment in the early morning Florida sun. We have hundreds of images from the show, and unfortunately the lighting conditions were not always ideal. Trying to pick thirty images out of this massive amount of digital eye candy just isn't possible. That said, we are providing you with two galleries of classic autos from the 11th annual Lake Mirror Classic.

If one of your favorites doesn't show up in this gallery, check back tomorrow for part two. We will be rounding out our coverage with images from last Sunday's Road Tour on . . . you guessed it, Sunday. All images originate from the lens of Drew Christy.

LA Auto Show Design Challenge: The 1,000 Pound Car

LA Auto Show Design Challenge: The 1,000 Pound Car test 1-1

At the Paris Motor Show, Lamborghini made a big splash when it cut hundreds of pounds off a concept that it called the Sesto Elemento. Using all kinds of  stripping and composite construction, Lamborghini created a V10-powered concept that weighed just 2,200 lbs.

Now that the LA Auto Show is on the way, some automakers will be making an even bigger splash by showing designs that weigh less than half Lamborghini's Sesto Elemento. This year's Design Challenge at the show involves creating four-seat vehicles weighing no more than 1,000 lbs.

Automakers Switch to New Innovative Engine Oil test 1-1

A new engine oil is gaining popularity (it's available from many automakers, such as Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Group, and General Motors) because of its ability to help engines run more efficiently and lessen the effects of wear. Those are important factors as automakers start to launch multitudes of fuel efficient small cars that have more horsepower than ever before.

Christmas Camaro Convertible Sells Out In Three Minutes Flat

Christmas Camaro Convertible Sells Out In Three Minutes Flat test 1-1

As detailed earlier this month, Neiman Marcus is offering a special-edition Chevy Camaro Convertible in its Christmas Book this year. Or at least that's what it was offering. After going on sale Tuesday at noon, the Camaro Convertible sold out in just three minutes.

It's hardly surprising that the Neimann's Camaro sold out, though the sheer speed by which it sold is a little shocking. The first 2011 Camaro Convertible to be available to buyers, the Neimann model is an SS-spec Camaro with 426-hp 6.2-liter V8 engine with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. It's biggest claim to fame isn't under the hood, however; it's around the exterior. The car features an absolutely stunning "Deep Bordeaux" paint scheme that changes tints depending upon the light conditions. That color is matched with barely-visible ghosted racing stripes, giving the special-edition convertible a truly unique look.

2006 Toyota Avalon test 2

Here we go again; Toyota announced today that it will recall 1.53 million vehicles that may be equipped with faulty braking systems. The recall cover models built between 2004 and 2006, and include several Lexus vehicles. The RX330, GS300, IS250, and IS350, as well as Toyota Highlander and Avalon models, are all included. Seems like I just took my Avalon in for a new steering rack . . .

Chrysler Sends Letters Awarding Fiat Franchises

Chrysler Sends Letters Awarding Fiat Franchises test 1-1

Chrysler has started the process of awarding Fiat dealer franchises. Letters of approval were sent out yesterday to those dealerships chosen from approximately 600 applicants. Chrysler selected dealers from over 100 specific markets that were pre-selected as those with high growth potential for small cars. The March launch of the Fiat 500 mini car, produced in Toluca, Mexico, marks the return of Fiat to the U.S. market. The small Fiat will be available in 4 different versions: a convertible and a sporty Abarth version in 2011, an electric model in 2012, and a high-roof, four-door model in 2013.

Chrysler has reported that the company is considering dealers other than those from the Chrysler network. Chrysler stated: “Dealers from outside the Chrysler Group dealer network also have shown great interest in securing the Fiat franchise, a selection team has been reviewing proposals from Chrysler dealers.”

Porsche Cayenne Wins SUV of the Year test 1-1

Well, this is just a slap in the face to anyone who prizes aesthetics in their vehicle—or has any taste whatsoever. Motor Trend announced today that it has chosen the ever-controversial-and-despised Cayenne as its 2011 Sport Utility of the Year. In a pool of 15 brand new SUVs, the Cayenne presented the best mix of engineering, safety, value, and design improvement.

Introduced just before the Geneva Motor Show, the 2011 Porsche Cayenne received some minor exterior revisions. The line also lost an average of 400 lbs. Porsche went with the same 300-hp 3.6-liter V6, 4.8-liter V8 and  500-hp twin-turbo 4.8-liter V8 engine options that the 2010 models used. The middle engine option equipped to the Cayenne S received a boost up to 400 horsepower.

Saab Introduces New 9-4X Crossover test 1-1

With Paris officially out of the way, automakers are turning their attention to the next big show: the LA Auto Show, which runs from November 19 through November 28 (press days November 17 and 18). Saab gave the world a sneak preview of the next car in its revamped line-up: a crossover called the 9-4X.

The 9-4X is built on the same platform as GM cars like the Cadillac SRX and Chevy Equinox (GM owned Saab until earlier this year). Saab has detailed two engine options that will be offered in the mid-size crossover: a direct-injected 265-hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 300-hp turbocharged 2.8-liter six-cylinder in the Aero trim. Both engine options come with six-speed automatic transmissions with paddle shifters and will power all four wheels through Saab's XWD all-wheel-drive system. According to NY Times Wheels blog, Saab will not offer a diesel engine option.

The car hits 62 mph in 8.4 seconds and gives drivers the option of powering all the way up to 143 mph.
