Maybe it's the economy. Maybe it's the rising cost of gas. Maybe it's people wanting to just be a little greener than they were ten years ago, or maybe it's all of the above and then some. Whatever the reasons are, the 'economy' class of cars is starting to take over their namesake.
Ford has redone the Focus for 2012 to set itself up to be the leader in not only entry level compacts, but it may just give some higher-end compact models something to think about. Starting with a new body that is 55 percent high-strength steel and boron, which is a record high for any vehicle Ford currently has on the market, the 2012 Focus will finally be the same magnificent car that has been available in Europe for the last few years. The Focus will get a single engine: A direct-injection 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine that makes 160 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque (up 20 hp and 10 lb-ft over the outgoing 2011 Duratec). This little Ford packs a lot into a small package.

When Bentley announced that it had broken the world ice speed record in a tuned-up Continental Supersports, it indicated that it would celebrate the record with a special edition model. That model will be unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and, by Bentley's own admission, will be the most powerful Bentley ever. With the 2012 Bentley Continental GT introduced last fall, Geneva seems like the perfect time to present an all-new Continental Supersports. Some new rumors point to possible specs for the limited edtiion Super-Bentley.

Gasoline blended with 10-percent corn-based ethanol has been around for decades. I remember it as "gasahol" in the seventies and its intent was to stifle the effect of our nation's first oil "crisis" by easing the burden at the pump a few cents per gallon. Fast forward to circa 2005 when the green movement was building steam, global warming transitioned from theory to belief and automakers (mainly domestic) were touting their new flex-fuel vehicles that could run on E85 (gasoline with 85 percent ethanol). There are several reasons for the sudden interest in E85. Gas prices were nearing the three-dollar per-gallon mark and E85 was cheaper, if you could find it. E85's lower emissions would help combat global warming and the stigma that went along with a fuel-sucking, environment polluting SUV.

Try this on for size: Last year, several Priuses had problems with accelerating into things. Nope, that's all wrong. It should read: Last year, several Prii had problems with accelerating into things. Yep, that's accurate.
At least, as of this week. Toyota announced earlier this week that it had concluded its "Prius goes plural" ad campaign, originally launched at the North American Internation Auto Show. And the voters have spoken: it will be Prii and not Priuseseseses.

Last week, we reported that there are now three electric Boxster prototypes in testing. And not a full week later, there are three electric 911 Carrera prototypes in testing. The only difference is the Boxsters were an actual Porsche project, and the electric 911s come from German tuning house RUF.
Tuners typically focus on making cars meaner, bigger, and more powerful, but RUF has a different type of tune in mind: a more environmentally conscious 911. RUF plans to build a test fleet of 10 electric 911s—known as "eRUFs", in the first half of this year. Each model will be equipped with one of three electric powertrains.

Can't say we didn't see it coming, but now it's official: BMW has rolled its Project i into an official "i" brand, which will comprise electric vehicles, hybrids, and other alternatively-fueled vehicles, like the Vision EfficientDynamics (i8). If BMW plays its cards right, its lowercase i may supplant Apple's (iPod, iPhone, iPad) as the epitome of technologically advanced, consumer-friendly design. But it'll take a lot to topple the big Mac.

Car companies really need to learn a little more quickly. Sure, I understand that they want to build anticipation as much as possible. But if they don't want their big reveals to be scooped by big leaks, they need to start moving faster in the fast-paced, connected world of today. Otherwise, every major official reveal is bound to take a back seat to a major leak-reveal.
Like Pagani before it, Lamborghini was in the midst of a slow teaser campaign, revealing the Aventador LP700-4 piece by tantalizing piece—like a Raging Bull version of a burlesque dancer. But instead of focusing on new, official pictures of the Aventador's chassis (snooze), media folks are free to focus on something far more engaging: the first picture of a fully uncovered Aventador LP700-4.

You know electrics are going to be the wave of the future when luxury-boat players like Rolls Royce start getting involved. Rolls will present what it's calling the world's first battery-powered ultra-luxury vehicle in the form of a Phantom EV prototype code-named 102EX. And like nearly every other new vehicle and concept of late, it will launch at the Geneva Motor Show.

If you’re one of the many unfortunate people to own a Ford F-150 from 2005-2006 prepare to duck, dive for cover, or play a hilarious practical joke on your obnoxious neighbor. Ford announced a recall today to cover nearly 150,000 trucks intended to repair airbags which deploy without warning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informed Ford back in November 2010 that the recall should cover 1.3 million F-150s from 2004-2006. Despite administrative advice, Ford chose to recall only those models from 2005-2006 and at a much lower quantity than suggested. Since the recall is significantly smaller in scope, the NHTSA is currently analyzing Ford’s response to determine if the recall is acceptable. If not, a negative finding could lead to a public hearing to evaluate whether or not Ford should increase the recall’s size.

We know that Porsche has been tasked with developing the architecture for Volkswagen Group sports cars and large, premium sedans, and it looks like one of its first jobs under that responsibility will be to develop the underpinnings of several new Bentleys. According to a report by Auto Express, Bentley will be launching three new vehicles over the next several years, and they are all set to be planted on Porsche underpinnings.
