Aston Martin has used its fame and prestige within the exotic car segment to rack up a million Facebook fans. Mini Roadster: The More Masculine Mini?

On: Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 10:56AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Mini Roadster test 2

We've got to at least give Mini credit, they're trying—the new Mini roadster looks pretty good.  It’s Lower, shorter, and narrower than the current feminine four seater. The roadster is a bit more of a head-turner than any of the micro machines we've seen in recent years.  The roadster is very similar to your average Mini, but there are some small noticeable changes.  Ducts before and aft of the rear wheels as well a spoiler that automatically raises and lowers (up when the car goes over 50 mph and drops back down when the car dips below 37 mph) all help to spice up the looks a bit, while the multilayered top keeps the fun going by being able to be dropped from the driver's seat with almost no effort at all.

Press Release: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Debuts As Most Powerful Production V8 In The World

On: Mon, Nov 21, 2011 at 9:27AM | By: Peter C Sessler

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 test 2

Yikes! 200 mph in a Mustang! Things certainly have changed. The ultimate Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT500, raises the bar high on performance with the introduction of the new 2013 model that goes on sale next year delivering 650 horsepower and a top speed of more than 200 mph. That’s more than the Camaro, for now.

The 5.8-liter V-8 aluminum-block engine produces 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful production V8 in the world. The 3,850-pound car also stays exempt from the gas-guzzler tax.

Nearly every part of the powertrain has been optimized for producing the additional horsepower, including a new supercharger, new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a new carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle.

Land Rover Updates DC100 Concepts For LA (But Not Enough)

Land Rover Updates DC100 Concepts test 2

Land Rover has updated the DC100 and DC100 Sport at the LA Auto Show. Unfortunately, as we feared, these are very minor updates and do little to bring the DC100 in line with the Defender that it will replace. The DC100 is looking as feeble and Stepford-ish as ever.

Land Rover brand director John Edwards recently told the media: "Sometimes we talk too much about the NAS [North American specification] 90 Defender and surfer dudes, and not enough about the Red Cross, Zambia or the Australian Outback. We want to get back to our roots, but it would be nice if in doing so, we can also sell it to the Californian surfer dude."

Unfortunately, the latest DC100 updates look plenty surfer dude, but not at all Australian Outback.

The Next Godzilla: 2013 Nissan GT-R Revealed

The Next Godzilla: 2013 Nissan GT-R Revealed test 2

The Nissan GT-R is not-that-arguably the best pound-for-pound (lb.-ft. for British pound?) sports car on the planet, offering supercar performance for a non-supercar price. Thing about owning any type of bragging rights, though, is that you don't keep them without evolving and getting stronger. Lay dormant and someone is going to pass you by.

Nissan clearly understands this, and for the second year in a row, it is upgrading the Japanese-spec GT-R with more horsepower and tuned handling.

The current Nissan GT-R took a leap from 485-hp to 523-hp and the 2013 model follows with an increase to 542-hp. The engine remains the familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6, but it gets tuned for more output and increased efficiency.

Wheeler Dealers To [Finally] Fix American Muscle

On: Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 8:59AM | By: Chris Salamone

Co-Hosts Mike Brewer and Edd China test 2

Like any good Discovery TV fan, the announcement of a Wheeler Dealers series focusing on the good ole’ USA was an exciting prospect back in September. However, since the season started in early October not a single Wheeler Dealers episode has featured a US vehicle, nor taken place off the British mainland. But that’s all about to change.

On Tuesday at 9pm, the Wheeler Dealers will take on a vehicle so potent, so grotesquely American, and so firmly routed to US cultural identity that spectators may just feel like the previous five episodes where nothing more than an accidental blip in an otherwise red, white, and blue season. What vehicle could have such a mind changing reaction, you ask? Nothing less than a desert-preserved classic 1969 Dodge Charger.

McLaren MP4-12C = The Eco Supercar?

On: Fri, Nov 18, 2011 at 4:11PM | By: Chris Weiss

McLaren MP4-12C test 2

Okay, eco supercar is definitely a bit far. A moniker like that only belongs on something truly inspired like the Porsche 918 Spyder or Jaguar C-X75, and depending on how the numbers pan out, maybe not even them. But unlike its competitors, the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C is not subject to the U.S. gas guzzler tax, so in its own little way, McLaren is doing something for Mother Nature.

McLaren's EPA rating of 15 city and 22 highway isn't exactly competitive with mainstream cars, but according to reports, the car will not be subject to a gas guzzler tax. Competitors like the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo are subject to the tax.

Infiniti Teases Glimpses Of Future At Geneva

On: Fri, Nov 18, 2011 at 2:46PM | By: Chris Salamone

Infiniti Sports Car Concept test 2

During this LA-induced period of auto euphoria, Infiniti has dropped a bombshell set of teaser images depicting a car they believe will extend the potential for both high performance and low emission electric cars. Set to make an official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2012, this latest Infiniti sports car concept looks to be an attempt to bridge the gap between performance enthusiasts and eco-friendly hipsters.

Although little and less is currently known about whether Infiniti plans to go into full production on this vehicle, the company’s official press video offers some insight into their game plan. From the upcoming JX to Nissan’s GT-R, we are talking about a brand which constantly strives to be on the cutting edge of style and technology. This future high performance range-extending electric sports car is an effort to raise the bar even further – a sort of one-up in the game of Mother Nature-approved performance.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Reveal

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Reveal test 2

After a series of leaks, the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe got a little more official last weekend when Hyundia presented it in Korea. Hyundia's sportiest car gets even sportier in the model-year facelift, both in terms of power and looks.

Hyundai debuted the new Genesis Coupe at the Korea Speed Festival 2011. The first thing you'll notice in the picture is a markedly updated front fascia that shares some styling cues with the Veloster. The new, sporty fascia gets a bulging, hexagonal grille; redesigned headlights; and LED fog lights, among other changes.

Press Release: New 2013 Cadillac XTS Control And Alert Strategy Assists Drivers

On: Fri, Nov 18, 2011 at 9:59AM | By: Peter C Sessler

2013 Cadillac XTS test 2

On the all-new XTS, Cadillac will debut a network of cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors to bolster driver vision and awareness of road hazards and intervene to help avert potential crashes. This is the strategy Cadillac calls control and alert.

In some cases, Cadillac’s enhanced vision and sensing systems will act without the driver, such as though automatic braking based on information indicating potential obstacles.

The new XTS contains several features using visual and audible alerts designed to identify potential threats with sufficient warning for the driver to react and make changes. One example is the Safety Alert Seat feature, which vibrates either the left or right side of the driver’s seat cushion depending on the location of the impending concern. Intervening features, such as automatic braking, take action automatically if the driver is slow to initially react.
