On: Thu, Jul 26, 2012 at 9:43AM | By: Chris Weiss

BMW On Demand Offers Flexible Rentals In US test 2

About two years ago, BMW launched the On Demand service in its hometown of Munich, Germany. Designed to give car rental customers more flexibility, the program offers BMW vehicles for hourly rental. So far, the service has been concentrated in Europe, but BMW will bring it to the United States in the coming weeks.

BMW has launched the website bmwondemandusa.com, which isn't fully up and running yet. Auto Blog reports that the first On Demand location will be BMW of Manhattan and will launch with about 100 328i models in stock. The models offered will change over time, and BMW is expected to expand to other major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington D.C.

Cadillac Flagship Is Go

Cadillac Flagship Is Go test 2

Cadillac's current flagship, the XTS sedan, has gotten off to a good start. GM is certainly hoping that good start will continue and possibly roll over into a strong debut for a bigger flagship sedan to compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S Class.

A Cadillac flagship has been rumored for years, and this week's news is the closest we've gotten to an official confirmation. According to Automotive News, insiders have revealed that the sedan has been given the official nod by GM brass. The rear-wheel-drive sedan will be built on the Omega platform.

Candid Video: Ferrari F12 Berlinetta On The Streets Of Maranello

Candid Video: Ferrari F12 Berlinetta On The Streets Of Maranello test 2

If there was one car of 2012 that we can't quite see enough of, it would be the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Unfortunately, since it's not on the market yet, we have about zero chance of seeing it on the road (not that there'd be much more of a chance even if it was on sale). Over near Ferrari's Maranello headquarters, on the other hand, people are actually lucky enough to see the latest Ferrari out and about. A new video provides some beautiful sights and sounds from Italy.

As much as we love seeing the F12 thrash about on the track, the best scene in the video, in our most humble of opinions, is a slow piece of footage that shows not one, not two, but three F12 Berlinettas driving down a public road, one after the other.

MG To Bring Back The Roadster...Crossover

MG To Bring Back The Roadster...Crossover test 2

Small car brands like MG develop followings that far exceed their footprints as businesses. Though the car brand has gone through many different owners over its 90-year history, models like the MGA and Midget still inspire passion and admiration among car fans many years later. So a return of an MG roadster model should be welcome news to many folks. We put emphasis on “should” because the new roadster model may draw more detractors than fans.

Instead of the small, two-seat format that it perfected back in the 50s, 60s and 70s, MG is reportedly looking to corrupt the roadster concept with a convertible crossover. The crossover will essentially be a soft-top version of the Icon concept that MG, now under Chinese ownership, unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in spring. Its styling will be heavily influenced by that concept.

Aston Martin May Use Toyota Engines

Aston Martin May Use Toyota Engines test 2

Last week, an Autocar report indicated that Aston Martin had some interest in smaller three-, four- and six-cylinder engines. The report sounded as though Aston was developing the engines in house, but a more obvious solution would be to look at existing small engines from other manufacturers. A new report points to Toyota as a possible source.

Aston already borrowed an engine (and entire car) from Toyota in building the decorated Toyota iQ called the Cygnet, so it makes some sense that it would go right back to Toyota for its next eco move. Amsterdam newspaper Der Telegraaf reports that Aston is looking at several possibilities.

Ford Recalls 9,320 More Escapes

On: Tue, Jul 24, 2012 at 3:06PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2013 Ford Escape test 2

Ford is not doing well lately. In the last couple weeks they have issued one recall for over 8,000 Escapes, and then more recently, another recall for their bigger F650 and F750 work trucks. This week, it is another recall, for another 9,320 brand new 2013 Escapes.

This time, new Escapes equipped with the 1.6-liter four cylinder engine built between October 5, 2011 through July 11, 2012 may have been given a faulty fuel line that is prone to splitting, and consequently, leaking fuel.  As one can imagine, leaking gasoline is never a good thing -- especially in an engine compartment.

Owners are being instructed to completely stop driving their Escapes and Ford will arrange for a pick up and free fix of owners fuel lines. This is definitely not a recall to ignore, so if you or anyone you know has a new Escape, have them all Ford 1-866-436-7332 as soon as possible.

Read on for the full report.

Kia Reveals Forte Update

Kia Reveals Forte Update test 2

Kia has revealed the first images of a sportier, more aggressive Forte. The new sedan, which should make its official debut later this year, gets some serious styling updates for the 2014 model year.

Kia says that its updated Forte, which will change names from Cerato to K3 in its home market of South Korea, gets lower, longer and wider. When comparing it to the 2013 Forte, it looks like an entirely different car that's been restyled from bumper to bumper. Some of the most drastic changes include the sportier fastback-like profile, redesigned rear fascia and new front end. The 2013 Forte is pretty forgettable in terms of looks; this update should make it stand out in the market.

Design Your Own Scion FR-S, Win SEMA Trip

Design Your Own Scion FR-S, Win SEMA Trip test 2

Apparently, California tuner Stillen wasn't paying attention when Aston Martin unveiled its DB9 1M. If it was, it would know that crowd sourcing a car design does not always end well. We suppose it probably already realizes the possibility for failure but is hoping its contest will turn out better. The contest offers amateur designers the opportunity to build their own body kit for the Scion FR-S.

Stillen isn't handing over full control; the contest only allows designers to work on the front lip, skirts and rear valence. Participants will download templates at the contest's website (stillen.com/frscontest), design their kit and send it back by August 14. Both hand-drawn and digital renderings are accepted. Multiple entries are allowed.

New Study Reveals How Sensor Safety Systems Stack Up

New Study Reveals How Sensor Safety Systems Stack Up test 2

As the automotive industry slowly drifts toward a future in which human driving will be obsolete, sensor-based safety systems are reaching more and more drivers. These systems use advanced hardware, including radar, lasers and motion sensors, to monitor and react to the road around you. Because these systems are often sold as options, consumers have the right to know: do they work and are they worth the investment? A new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute provides some insight.

Subaru BRZ And Scion FR-S Among Hottest Sellers Last Month

Subaru BRZ And Scion FR-S Among Hottest Sellers Last Month test 2

It would appear that there's a big market in the US for entry level Japanese sports coupes - or maybe just hot, long-anticipated new sports coupes. Both the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S hit the market in the spring, and sales have been strong ever since. In fact, both models were among the fastest-selling vehicles in the month of June.

Edmunds' fast-selling lists looks at averages for how long cars sit at the dealership before selling. In the case of Subaru BRZ, which tied the Cadillac XTS for fastest-selling in June, that number is 7 days. Subaru also led the pack in May with a 4-day turnaround time.

Aston Martin Toiling With Three- And Four-Cylinder Engines

Aston Martin Toiling With Three- And Four-Cylinder Engines test 2

Unlike other supercar marques, including Ferrari (Fiat), Lamborghini (Volkswagen) and Bugatti (VW), Aston Martin doesn't have the umbrella of a larger auto group to hide under when it comes time to meet emissions mandates. It's pretty much out there on its own, which is why we see weird but necessary cars like the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet. And even though it has reduced the emissions of its V-8 and V-12 portfolio, Aston may pursue drastically smaller engines in the future.

According to a short report on Autocar, Aston is considering six-, four- and three-cylinder engines. Aston chief Ulrich Bez told the magazine: "Four or even three cylinders are possible. If the spirit of the times demands six cylinders, then it has to be looked at."
