Rolls-Royce Is Bustin' Out All Over, Part 2: Now It's The FACTORY That's Expanding

On: Tue, Sep 13, 2011 at 1:35PM | By: Andrew W Davis

Rolls-Royce factory shot test 2

It’s true: the global financial crisis is not only over, it’s been drawn, quartered, salted, burned, and cast to the winds. How else could ultra-luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce have not only hit its maximum plant capacity, but exceeded it?

Here’s their PR department's typically understated (read: "English") way of saying it: “The Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood in West Sussex is to expand in the months ahead. The news follows significant growth in worldwide sales over the last 18 months and a greater demand from customers for highly personalised Rolls-Royce Ghost and Phantom models.”

Or: Makin’ a killin’ is their business, and business is GOOD….

Chevy Camaro ZL1 Rated At 580-HP

Chevy Camaro ZL1 Rated At 580-HP test 2

Back when the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, Chevy said that it produced an "estimated" 550 horses from its 6.2-liter supercharged LSA engine. When we heard that little caveat, we assumed that it was going to be slightly lower, since we figured Chevy would want to project the highest output possible. But, between then and now, something else happened: rumors about the 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 offering around 600 horses hit the interwaves, and Chevy decided to move that "estimated" figure right on up the scale.

The Camaro ZL1 recalls the 1969 engine of the same name and will be the most powerful Camaro ever. Its 580 hp will come at 6,000 rpm, and its 556 lb-ft of torque will come at 4,500 rpm. The LSA engine offers 24 horses and 5 lb-ft over its Cadillac CTS-V application. In short, the ZL1 means business.

Want To Test Drive A GM? Go To The Dealer Like Everyone Else

Want To Test Drive A GM? test 2

It was only a few months ago that GM was heavily marketing its "Main Street in Motion" program, a sort of traveling test-drive in which it took a variety of products from GMC, Buick, and Chevy (no Caddies for the masses, unfortunately) and offered test drives at events and stadiums. Interestingly, it not only offered test drives of its own vehicles (including the Camaro and Chevy Volt), but also of competitors, so you could get a true, head-to-head comparison. For GM, it was a good way to get out into the community and try to change any negative perceptions and reinforce positive ones. For consumers, it was a good way to test a variety of vehicles at once. Frankly, it seemed like a great idea.

Apparently, despite GM's best efforts, the Main Street in Motion program wasn't particularly successful, because GM has shut it down in favor of more conventional advertising routes.

Toyota Announces 2012 Tacoma Pricing

Toyota Announces 2012 Tacoma Pricing test 2

Toyota announced this week the pricing for its perennial all-star pickup truck. In a press release, Toyota cited several updates we can expect in the 2012 Tacoma, including a slight facelift, a new multimedia system called 'Entune,' as well as two new exterior colors:  Spruce Mica and Nautical Blue Metallic.

The price announcement is a very real reflection of the current US economic state—only the base (read cheapest) model gets anything higher than a 3% increase in base price. Some models, like the PreRunner Access Cabs (both auto and manual versions), have not been increased by a single penny.

Keep reading to see the full press release and find out just how much that model you had your eye on has gone up, if at all.

Lease Trading **Uncensored**

On: Thu, Sep 8, 2011 at 3:46PM | By: Chris Salamone

Lease Trading test 2

There are a few popular websites that push lease trading, but LeaseTrader.com is perhaps the most recognizable and easiest to work with. In as few as four days to six weeks, the seller’s leasing company can process the transaction and put you in a previously leased vehicle at significant savings. But the process is unclear, obscured from the suspicious lens of the prudent buyer. Hopefully, we can clear up some of the muddy water with a lease trading rundown.

For starters, people who assume leases don’t have to pay any down payment on their new car. And the reason is simple: the former owner already paid!

Fisker Expansion Plans Start in Frankfurt test 2

Though it seemed to have its hands more than full with getting the Karma to market, Fisker has been working on some other models too. The green luxury-sports automaker will showcase its latest creation at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

Fisker has a new production model to debut at Frankfurt. It will be based on the Karma's platform, utilizing the same dual-motor, range-extending powertrain and aluminum spaceframe. Past rumors have indicated the car will be a shooting brake/crossover model. It will go on sale next year.

ANOTHER Honda Recall!

On: Wed, Sep 7, 2011 at 9:58AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

ANOTHER Honda Recall! test 2

Hot on the heels of last month’s massive 1.5 million car recall, it seems Honda has a few more problems on their hands. It seems that the power window switch found in the Fit, CR-V, and City models has been created with a defect that can cause it to heat up significantly and potentially catch fire, which is not on the list of things to do for most daily commutes.

Besides that bit of fun, Honda has issued another recall in tandem with the CR-V for its hybrid CR-Z model because when the battery is low on charge, the gas engine has stalled and the transmission is in gear, the electric motor may actually rotate in the opposite direction—meaning you could go forward when the car is in reverse. That would be a tough one to explain to the cops or the insurance company.

The good news is that no serious injury or deaths have been reported as of yet because of these defects, but the bad news is that over 936,000 units worldwide have been affected and are slated to head back to dealerships. Keep reading to see the full press release from Honda.

More Juice Behind Porsche Mid-Level Supercar

More Juice Behind Porsche Mid-Level Supercar test 2

The term "mid-level" supercar may be a complete oxymoron, but it's the best term we can think of to describe cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo. These cars have pedigrees that're too refined to be called mere "sports cars—and "mid-level sports car"? Perish the thought. However, these cars sit in the middle of the market both within their own brand and in the greater market. So "mid-level" supercar just fits.

Rumors are back that Porsche will be aiming at some of those competitors in launching a supercar between the 911 line and the upcoming 918 Spyder.

2012 Nissan Maxima Is the Latest Price Hold

2012 Nissan Maxima Is the Latest Price Hold test 2

Japanese brands sure are reluctant to increase prices this year. Honda held pricing on its Accord; Toyota is selling the Camry for less than its 2011 equivalent; and now Nissan is placing a price hold on the Maxima. Both the 2012 Maxima 3.5 S and 3.5 SV are offered at the same price as their 2011 equivalents. And they get a few upgrades to boot.

The 2012 Maxima 3.5 S will start at $31, 750 and the Maxima 3.5 SV will start at $34, 450. Those prices are before a $760 destination charge. Both models are powered by a 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine and Xtronic CVT transmission with available paddle shifters.

McLaren Bringing Three Levels Of Sports Car

On: Fri, Sep 2, 2011 at 4:07PM | By: Chris Weiss

McLaren Bringing Three Levels Of Sports Car test 1-1

It was literally days after the MP4-12C was officially revealed when rumors of additional McLaren vehicles started heating up. At the time, it was speculated that the MP4-12C would be the middle of the road, while a supercar and entry level model would join it in the years to come. A new report confirms that rumor and provides some further insight into the next few years at McLaren.

In the September issue of Motor Trend, the venerable magazine talks to McLaren about the future of product expansion. The first item on the docket is a convertible version of the MP4-12C. The Internet snippet doesn't say when the car will be revealed, but based on other time frames, we're guessing it'll have to be next year.

Bentley SUV To Look All Bentley

Bentley SUV To Look All Bentley test 1-1

Wolfgang Durheimer sure loves to talk to the media, huh? In his short time at the helm of Bentley/Bugatti, he's basically confirmed a Bugatti sedan, Bentley SUV and, quite possibly, a Veyron successor. And, he's given hints and details at what those cars might look/drive like. The latest from Durheimer is that the Bentley SUV will look and feel like a full-on Bentley.

Despite borrowing heavily from current VW SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne for its underpinnings, Bentley's model will be all Bentley in terms of styling and driving. And that won't mean a sporty Continental GT face on a big, unwieldy Cayenne body; the Bentley SUV will look Bentley from every angle.
