Drop In Accidents Linked To BlackBerry Outage

Drop In Accidents Linked To BlackBerry Outage test 2

Surprisingly, Apple's new iPhone 4S wasn't the only phone making headlines last week. For three days (Tuesday through Thursday), millions of BlackBerry users in Europe, Africa, India, the Middle East, Latin America and parts of North America were left without services like messaging, email and internet due to a major server crash. While the outage may have inconvenienced BlackBerry owners (and really damaged RIM’s [Research In Motion – makers of BlackBerry phones] reputation), it may have made roads in the Middle East a safer place.

According to The National, traffic accidents fell 20 percent in Dubai and 40 percent (with no fatal accidents) in Abu Dhabi during the days of BlackBerry’s disruption.

Mercedes Recalls Nearly 7,000 Cars!

Mercedes Recalls Nearly 7,000 Cars! test 2

Although dated earlier than today, Mercedes just recently issued a recall for quite a number of its diesel models produced during various (and specific) time periods during the last two years.  The E-Class, GL-Class, ML-Class, R-Class, and S-Class diesel models are all being brought back because it seems they have a penchant for depositing fuel on the roadway, which can obviously cause the roadway to become dangerously slick for other drivers or even catch fire under the right conditions.  Read on for the full report from Safercar.gov

BMW To Introduce Laser Headlights Within Three Years

BMW To Introduce Laser Headlights Within Three Years test 2

BMW recently spent some serious time detailing its ConnectedDrive technologies of the future in a comprehensive press kit. Turns out, at least one of those technologies isn't that far away. The company said that laser headlights will make a production debut within two to three years.

Hanafi Abdul, BMW's optical systems designer, explained to Inside Line that the laser headlights are actually production ready now, but are waiting for the right vehicle. That vehicle will most definitely be the i8, which was the first vehicle to feature the laser headlights in concept form, but the laser headlights may even debut before the i8 on a separate vehicle, according to Abdul. The production i8 will debut in about two years at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Checking Your Bulbs May Be A "Bright Idea" But I'm Too Awesome A Writer To Stoop To Such Punnery

Checking Your Bulbs test 2

There have been quite a few how-to-ish articles posted around here but none has covered my particular automobile-upkeep-related pet peeve (OK, one of my many): burned-out bulbs.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “borrrrrriiiinnnnng.”  Well, you are not far from Truthsville on that one. But seeing as how the burned-out taillight is practically the state symbol of Michigan these days—I’m still waiting to hear back from the governor on my idea, though, so it’s still “unofficial”—MANY of you need to need to be bored with this.

Bored into ACTION, that is!

Ferrari 599 Replacement To Break 700 Horses

Ferrari 599 Replacement To Break 700 Horses test 2

We already knew that 2012 is set up to be Year of the Ferrari. While Ferrari will be introducing new models over the next few years (like the recent 458 Spider), 2012 will give us an Enzo successor and a 599 GTB successor. Ferrari's two hottest super-coupes making their debut in the same year means a lot of attention will be on Maranello.

We already heard a few details about the Enzo successor recently, and now we have a little info on the 599. Ferrari confirms that the next 599 will push the bar over 700 hp, 80 hp more than the current 599, and about 30 more than the 599 GTO.

2012 New BMW 3-Series

2012 New BMW 3-Series test 2

Well, it finally happened! The sixth 3-Series from BMW will hit our shores in February 2012. Of course, the new BMW will be restyled but still remains looking like a BMW should with all the usual BMW styling cues, especially the kidney grilles in the front. After all, the BMW 3-Series is the bread and butter of the entire BMW line.

The sixth generation BMW is slightly larger: 3.66 in. longer, with a longer wheelbase, 1.96. in. The noticeable increase in space is definitely a positive change, especially for larger passengers. Given the fact that the car is larger, it actually weighs 88 lbs. less than its predecessor.

Bentley Going W-12 And V-12 In SUV

Bentley Going W-12 And V-12 In SUV test 2

Wolfgang Durheimer is clearly a man that likes to distinguish his vehicles as the best of the best. That's good, because he happens to head two of the world's most exclusive auto brands: Bugatti and Bentley. Reports recently indicated that Durheimer was unsatisfied with the Bugatti 16C Galibier and sent the already extreme sedan back to engineers for more power and more interior roominess to ensure it separated itself from other ultra-premium and tuned sedans.

That same uncompromising attitude is ensuring that the upcoming Bentley SUV (which hopefully doesn't look too much like Autocar's artist rendering above) will stand head and shoulders above the rest of the sport utility riff-raff as the most luxurious option on the road.

Ford To Build Smaller V-6 And Bigger V-8

Ford To Build Smaller V-6 And Bigger V-8 test 2

Earlier this week, some Ford/United Auto Workers contracts leaked onto the Web. While only the most dedicated auto journalists would be interested in the i's and t's of the worker agreements, the rest of us are interested in the details about Ford's upcoming products that they included. Key among those products are two new engines to be developed: a 5.8-liter V-8 engine for the Mustang Shelby GT500 and a 2.5- to 3.0-liter V-6 engine with direct injection and turbocharging.

Ferrari CEO: Enzo To Get V-12 And Carbon Fiber Chassis

Ferrari CEO: Enzo To Get V-12 And Carbon Fiber Chassis test 2

One of the car's on our "can't wait" list is the Ferrari Enzo successor, which will debut next year. The car will reignite the F40, F50, Enzo blood line and promises to be one of the most exciting supercar debuts of 2012.

Given the excitement surrounding the flagship sports car, there has been no shortage of rumors and speculation on the model. Rumors have typically ping-ponged between the Enzo successor going with a V-12 engine ,as its last predecessor had, or digging down deeper into the playbook and reintroducing a twin-turbo V-8 like the F40 used. Well, according to Ferrari chief Amedeo Felisa, it's all V-12.

BMW Previews Advanced ConnectedDrive Technologies

BMW Previews Advanced ConnectedDrive Technologies test 2

Back at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW launched the Vision ConnectedDrive. While the car was a pretty striking, retro-inspired-futuro roadster, its main emphasis wasn't on aesthetics, but on technology. The car was equipped with a variety of technological components like a three-dimensional heads-up display and vehicle-to-vehicle communications system. This month, BMW issued a lengthy presser, taking us much deeper into the innovative (and perhaps twisted) world of ConnectedDrive.

The short story, cars are going to be a whole lot more intuitive in the future. The long story...read on.

Toyota And Mercedes Voted Top 15 Brands

Toyota And Mercedes Voted Top 15 Brands test 2

Interbrand's list of Top 100 companies is out, and two automakers have ranked among the top 15 companies. Interbrand is a global brand management company, and its annual list of the top 100 brands analyzes how a given brand helps its company perform financially, attract a talented employee pool, meet customer demands, and perform overall.

The top 10 are a list of very recognizable brands headed by Coca Cola, IBM, and Microsoft. Other household names like McDonald's, Disney, and Apple are also in the top 10. The top automaker chosen is Toyota, which slots in at number 11. Mercedes-Benz follows at number 12, and other automakers to make the top 100 are Honda (number 19), Volkswagen (number 47), Ford (number 50), Audi (number 59), Hyundai (number 61), Porsche (number 72), Nissan (number 90), Ferrari (number 99), and Harley-Davidson (number 100).

Toyota, which was also number 11 last year, is an especially interesting choice given some of the mud that the brand was dragged through last year after its unprecedented recall problems and government hearings on its culpability.
