Kia Releases Supermodel Super Bowl Commercial

Kia Releases Supermodel Super Bowl Commercial test 2

Puppy dogs and hyper-excited aliens are cute - heck, even sand-bearing elves make us crack a smile - but if you really want to win the hearts and minds of America's red-blooded football fan, there's really only one way to do it: gorgeous women. There's a reason that sports teams have cheerleaders.

That's the direction that Kia takes with its Optima Super Bowl commercial, featuring Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima - one of the most lusted after women in the world - and a bevy of bikini models. To round out 60 seconds of sheer, testosterone-fueled excitement, Kia also throws in some hard rock courtesy of Motley Crue, championship bull rider Judd Leffew and UFC fighting legend Chuck Liddell.

The 16-second teaser clip released last week was basically a long, slow motion shot of Lima, making it look even more sexy than the actual commercial. In the actual ad, Lima plays but a supporting role in a greater story that's based around the vastly different psyches of men and women. The "Sandman" comes in to cast sweet dreams upon a soundly sleeping woman but accidentally spills some of his dream dust on her husband. What ensues is two very different versions of "sweet dreams."

Honda Gives Ferris Bueller A Second Day Off

Honda Gives Ferris Bueller A Second Day Off test 2

Honda released the extended version of its Ferris Bueller-based Super Bowl commercial for all to see. It plays like a sequel packed down into a two-and-a-half minute commercial, with movie references galore.

Honda isn't kidding about advertising its new, massive-headed 2012 CR-V. Not only did it revive a 25-year-old movie for its latest commercial, and not only did it get a still-relevant Matthew Broderick to act in it, it also employed director Todd Phillips whose past works include The Hangover, Due Date and Old School.

Called “Matthew's Day Off,” the commercial plays closely to the original with dozens of references and props. Some references - like the "Broderick...Broderick" that mimics Ben Stein's legendary “Bueller....Bueller” - are obvious, while others are much more subtle. Honda uses the example of a vest from the original movie that appears in a department store window as one of the plants that you'll find if you pay attention. Honda is encouraging viewers to look closely for these “Easter eggs” and discuss them at Facebook.com/hondacrv.

Is This The Lamborghini Crossover? We Hope Not.

Is This The Lamborghini Crossover? test 2

Reports about the imminent debut of Lamborghini's third model have been gaining all kinds of steam over the past few months. It's largely thought that Lamborghini will debut a concept version of its third model at the Geneva Motor Show next month. A new article from Italy's Quattroruote magazine indicates Lamborghini will hold off until April to reveal the model. More importantly, some leaked images purported to be from the magazine show what the Lambo crossover will look like.

To be fair, everything we've heard about the Lamborghini crossover - particularly the bit about a crossover with supercar styling (rather than just crossover styling) - has led us to believe it would be one awkward-looking nugget. We're still not quite sure if these early pictures are better or worse than what we were expecting/fearing, but they are pretty bad.

The pictures show a small crossover with a clearly Aventador-inspired front end. And guess what? It doesn't really work very well. Who'da thought bolting a supercar face onto a small SUV body wouldn't make for the best looking piece of car? Probably millions (billions?) of people. If you thought the Porsche Cayenne was a disheartening sell-out, you're going to need some anti-depressants to make it through this one.

VW Reveals Next-Gen Platform, Bulli Cometh?

MQB Platform test 2

Volkswagen has just unveiled perhaps the most significant development of 2012: an all-new platform meant to underpin everything from the Up! to the A3 and next European Passat. As the photos show, the MQB platform – short for Modularer Querbaukasten or modular transverse-engine – has an adjustable wheelbase to fit a variety of different vehicle sizes, engines, and transmissions. And best of all, the introduction of a production ready MQB signals one really enticing possibility…

Last year’s Geneva Auto Show included an MQB concept vehicle which effectively stole the show: the Bulli microvan. Since the MQB’s wheelbase can range between 98.2, 101.8, and 103.5 inches, this single platform is capable of underpinning a wide array of glorious new models – including the Up!, Polo, future Audi TT and A1. And you guessed it, the success of Volkswagen’s new MQB platform might herald the much-anticipated second coming of the company’s ultimate camper van.

Volvo Demonstrates Autonomous Road Train Concept

Volvo Road Train Concept test 2

Players from all over the automotive and technology industries are working on developing autonomous driving systems. Last week, Volvo demonstrated its own take on autonomous driving with its first test of the European Union-supported Safe Road Trains for the Environment program.

The 'road train' tested by Volvo consists of a lead truck and a series of three self-driven cars following it. The vehicles travel at speeds of up to 56 mph with no more than 6 meters (about 20 feet) between them.

Similar to actual trains, road trains would allow vehicle 'drivers' to catch up on work, read the newspaper, eat breakfast, etc. Drivers would turn into passengers and would no longer be required to keep their eyes on the road or operate the vehicle. The system would essentially provide a public transportation-like commute on roadways.

Star Power: Acura Pairs Jerry Seinfeld And New NSX In Super Bowl Ad test 2

In the world of cars, there are few bigger celebrities at this moment than the all-new Acura NSX, a car that's been in the making for years. In the world of comedy, there are few bigger celebrities than Jerry Seinfeld, whose Seinfeld television show is largely considered one of the best shows of all time. So why not combine the two into a big Super Bowl ad?

The Acura NSX spot is one of the latest in a growing field of car Super Bowl commercials previewed via YouTube. The commercial depicts Seinfeld - a known car buff - at an Acura dealer trying to buy the first NSX. Unfortunately, he can only get the number 2 spot because "that guy" is already the first buyer.

Fiat Strada Leaps From Brazil To Europe

Fiat Strada test 2

Anyone who follows our AS Classic Car Cultist thread will tell you that we don’t lack enthusiasm for car-based pickups. And while most Americans might laugh in the face of compact payload capacities, sub-100 horsepower engines, and gimmicky monikers, we see things differently. Which is why Fiat’s recent decision to send their super-mini coupe utility to Europe strikes a chord with us – couldn’t the Strada work for America as well?

Judging by our country’s lukewarm reaction to the currently-available 500 model, perhaps the more radical Strada series might add water to an already ill-fated Italian ship (pun intended). Or perhaps not…the Strada is a vehicle which consists of a unique mix of affordability, practicality, and aesthetic character.

McLaren MP4-12C Spyder test 2

The McLaren MP4-12C Roadster is the next super-sports car up on McLaren's expanding roster. The car will debut sometime this year, and judging by the increasing number of spy photos and reports on it, we wouldn't be surprised to see it in Geneva. A few new details surfaced this week.

According to a Car magazine report, the MP4-12C convertible will be more of a targa-roof style car. The car will use a three-piece retractable hard top made of aluminum and plastic. The roof will retract in 17 seconds and operate at speeds up to 5 mph.

The convertible will share the same mid-mounted 592-hp V-8 engine and is expected to come close to the hard-top's performance figures of 3.3 seconds to 62 mph and 205 mph top out.

'Luxury Brand' Chrysler Considers A 100 Model

'Luxury Brand' Chrysler Considers A 100 Model test 2

When Fiat took over at Chrysler, it announced plans to move Chrysler back to the position of luxury automaker that it enjoyed years ago before muddying its image with more plebeian models. While Chrysler still falls short of other luxury brands, the unification of the naming and styling of the new 300 and 200 was a move in the right direction.

Now Fiat/Chrysler may do a complete 180 and start to undo their own handiwork. A new report says that a '100' model is under consideration.

Mazda Recalls 52,000 Tributes

Mazda Recalls 52,000 Tributes test 2

Although 2002 feels like it was a lifetime ago, that doesn't mean there aren’t still plenty of cars from that time still on the road. In fact, there are those of us that have just recently (and finally) paid off our cars from those years, and we plan on keeping them for a while and any defects we don't know about could hinder that plan. Thankfully, Mazda has been kind enough to recall 52,390 Tribute models from 2001-2002.

The Tributes have a defective master cylinder reservoir cap, which is prone to leaking brake fluid. Not only can having a low amount of brake fluid cause severe driving issues, the fluid can damage parts of the ABS system around the master cylinder and even cause a fire.

The recall is expected to start today, and Mazda has said they will perform the repairs for free. Mazda also recommends parking the cars outside until the repairs have been made, due to the increase fire risk.

Bueller...Bueller...Honda's Super Bowl Commercial Brings Back Iconic Role

Honda's Super Bowl Commercial Brings Back Iconic Role test 2

Car manufacturers are really pulling out the stops for this year's Super Bowl. We've seen big contests, major giveaways, advertisements for advertisements and now the return of a legendary movie character we haven't seen in more than 25 years. One of the greatest movie characters of the 80s is back...to advertise Hondas.

A short teaser clip featuring Matthew Broderick - the actor that played Ferris Bueller for those that aren't up on 80s trivia - hit the Web on Thursday. The YouTube description says simply: "We hate to be such a tease, but on a day like today, we just have to. Stick it out until the Super Bowl, or take a "day off" on Monday and catch the big reveal." The teaser was posted by 'chukachuka2012' as in chuka...cchhhukkaaa with no solid evidence of what it was all about.
