Volvo Recalls 1,400 New S80s

On: Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 1:47PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Volvo S80 test 2

Volvo has announced a recall of 1,469 S80 models made between 2011-2013. It seems that a factory error has caused a fault within the transmission of these cars. When coasting, the car is unable to downshift which could cause a multitude of problems from stalling to acceleration problems -- all of which could cause potentially dangerous road conditions for drivers and other motorists alike. Volvo has planned to begin its recall next week, but owners can call Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 to schedule a free fix.

Mitsubishi May Offer A Full Line Of Hybrids And Electrics In North America

Mitsubishi May Offer A Full Line Of Hybrids And Electrics In North America test 2

A couple weeks ago, Mitsubishi teased the upcoming Outlander PHEV, which it will show at the Paris Motor Show. While it hasn't yet announced plans for North American production, new reports indicate Mitsubishi will offer a line of hybrids and electrics here.

Mitsubishi kicked off its North American electric presence with this year's iMiev, which won an EPA best with its 112 mpg-e rating. AutoGuide reports that the Japanese automaker is currently looking at the feasibility of developing a broader electric American lineup. The report doesn't get into specific models, outside of the Outlander PHEV that we already know about.

The report is a follow-up to Autocar's revelation that Mitsubishi will electrify its entire fleet in the UK. According to the magazine, Mitsubishi will offer a hybrid or electric powertrain, alongside a gas engine option, on all its offerings.

Toyota BMW Partnership May Work On Supra Successor

Toyota BMW Partnership May Work On Supra Successor test 2

Last month, BMW and Toyota announced an expansion of their working relationship and mentioned that part of the agreement will include joint work on a sports car. The statement made the expanded relationship sound largely like a trade-off: Toyota's expertise in hybrid powertrains for BMW's expertise in sports cars. In a report that essentially puts itself together, the sports car in question may be the rumored Supra successor.

We've been hearing about a Supra successor for a while now. With Toyota known to be working with BMW on a sports car, it would make sense that that sports car be a mid-level/high-end coupe like the Supra. While Automotive News Europe doesn't know this for a fact, it cites a "BMW insider" in speculating that the sports car could indeed be a new Supra successor, possibly based on the new 6 Series architecture.

Mini To Split Countryman Into Family MPV And SUV

Mini Countryman test 2

Mini has realized that its Countryman isn't all that well defined. According to a new report, the BMW minicar brand plans to rectify the situation by replacing the Countryman with two separate models. It will introduce a family-hauling MPV and a harder, more believable SUV.

Though the Mini Countryman has been defined as a crossover, and it comes with optional all-wheel drive, it's a bit hard to accept an elongated, five-door Cooper as a true crossover. And it's not really a family hauler for grown up Mini fanatics, either. For all intents and purposes, it's basically just the awkward largest car in a brand that's defined by tiny cars.

A Glimpse of Fiat's 500X SUV

A Glimpse of Fiat's 500X SUV test 2

A Fiat 500 crossover is the type of rumor you can't believe until you see it with your own eyes. Fiat has given us just the opportunity by flashing a quick preview of the 500X before an audience equipped with cameras. It may have been a launch event for the extended-wheelbase 500L, but the real story was the 500X.

Fiat gave attendees at the Italian launch event a look at the biggest 500 and then quickly pulled a curtain back over the upcoming model. It's not clear when Fiat will give the world a proper look, but it is clear that a 500X is on the way.

France Makes Drivers Carry Breathalyzers

France Makes Drivers Carry Breathalyzers test 2

In an interesting move, France has passed a law that requires every vehicle in the country to carry its own breathalyzer. Not only will drivers suspected of drunk driving have to take the test, they'll have to supply it.

Outside of shifting some of the cost of breathalyzer equipment from state to citizen, the law doesn't really appear to do a whole lot. If it required a breathalyzer-based ignition system, it might actually do something to cut down on drunk driving. But since it basically just means throwing a breathalyzer in the glove compartment, it really doesn't seem to have much juice.

Bad News For Cowboys: Study Finds Highest Repair Costs In The West

Study Finds Highest Repair Costs In The West test 2

Cowboys might want to consider ditching their big diesel pickup trucks in favor of the real horse power of their ancestors. A new study shows that repair costs relating to the dreaded "check engine" light are highest in some of the states where cows and cowpokes still graze freely. CarMD, manufacturer of the Vehicle Health System diagnostic tool, released its study results last month.

It's a fateful moment for any driver: The brightly colored check engine light pops on during an otherwise routine drive, and your mind immediately starts racing. You're thinking about everything from when your last oil change was to whether you secured the gas cap after your last fill up to cashing out your entire bond and stock portfolio in order to pay for a full emissions system overhaul. It's not a good day.

Watch The Infiniti Emerg-E Take On Goodwood (Video)

Watch The Infiniti Emerg-E Take On Goodwood test 2

Infiniti said that it would use the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the Emerg-E concept's first public drive, and it made good on the promise over the weekend. Infiniti rolled out the working prototype, and drivers hit the Hillclimb with it. A short, sweet video brings all us non-Goodwood attendees up to speed.

Infiniti debuted the Emerg-E at this year's Geneva Motor Show. It spent the ensuing months building a working prototype true to the concept, with the help of a variety of British partners, including the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB), Lotus Engineering, EVO and Xtrac.

Toyota And BMW Team Up On Sports Car

Toyota And BMW Team Up On Sports Car test 2

The Bimota? The Toyimmer? We'd better start working on a name that flows as naturally as "Toyobaru," because Toyota and BMW have announced a partnership that includes co-development of a sports car. The new announcement is the latest expansion in an agreement that was first announced last year and includes development of battery technology.

Toyota president Akio Toyoda explains in a statement: "BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars. We respect each other. That is why we already can take the next step together. Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells … I believe BMW's strength is developing sports cars. I get so excited thinking about the cars that will result from this relationship."

Acura ZDX Refresh Coming Later This Year

Acura ZDX Refresh Coming Later This Year test 2

Acura reveals this week that the oddball ZDX sports crossover will be refreshed for the 2013 model year. While it hasn't detailed specifics just yet, the updated crossover will hit the market by fall 2012, so expect a full reveal within the coming months.

In a greater preview of upcoming vehicles, Acura says that the ZDX refresh will include exterior styling changes and new technology. The 2013 ZDX will be offered in a single value-added package.

Infiniti May Look To Essence Concept, Not Emerg-E For Flagship

Infiniti May Look To Essence Concept, Not Emerg-E For Flagship test 2

"Infiniti EMERG-E is physical proof of Infiniti’s intention to produce a bold halo model befitting the brand’s promise of Inspired Performance, and also signals an array of exciting new technologies that the brand will adopt in its quest to build dramatic and sustainable high performance cars." Infiniti used that sentence to introduce the Emerg-E performance hybrid at this year's Geneva Motor Show. While the statement doesn't say that the Emerg-E will be the "bold halo model," it certainly implies it. The fact that Infiniti has built a working prototype supplies further evidence.

Things may not be so clear cut, however. A new report casts doubt on whether the Emerg-E will be Infiniti's halo car, suggesting that Nissan's luxury arm will reach further back in its concept car portfolio.
