Five Questions You Should Answer Before Buying an Extended Warranty test 1-1

Extended vehicle warranties have become almost as common as life insurance and retirement funds.  On the surface they seem to make good sense.  After all, why pay through the nose for car repairs when you don’t have to?  But, before signing your name to an agreement that may or may not be worth the paper it’s printed on, ask yourself the following questions first:

The Coldest Test Track in the US, and Why You're Safer Because of It test 1-1

The next time you set out on a winter’s drive, you might want to give some thought to the tiny town of Baudette, MN, population 1100. Why? Because chances are that many of the cold weather features in your vehicle were tested in this icy little hamlet just below the Canadian border.

Used Car Highlight: Toyota Echo

 Toyota Echo test 2

Remember a while ago when I made a point of how lovely it is to own something basic and underpowered? A few months have passed, and having recently received a few solicitations for advice from prospective used-car buyers, I felt like sharing a car that’s recently come up on my radar. As a disclaimer: when I say basic, I mean it; we’re talking four-wheels-and-an-engine.

Ron Dennis Returns as CEO of McLaren F1

Ron Dennis Returns as CEO of McLaren F1 test 1-1

For those of us who are fans of the McLaren Formula 1 team, this past season was an exercise in what marketing types would call “managing expectations.”  2013 was McLaren’s first season without a win since 2006 and the first in almost 30 years without a podium. For a team whose motto is “Win at everything we do,” that’s a tough row to hoe. Reasons and explanations (though never excuses) abound but, the fact of the matter is that, McLaren as it stood simply wasn’t good enough. Despite having initial input on the 2013 car (the MP4-28), chief designer Paddy Lowe was poached by Mercedes  early in the season, and the already fundamentally-flawed car clearly suffered from a lack of consistent, effective development as a result.

Volvo Recalls 30,000 S60 Models

Volvo Recalls 30,000 S60 Models test 1-1

Volvo has issued a recall for S60 models designated as 2011 and 2012 model years, specifically those built between June 22, 2010 through May 14, 2012, cars that were manufactured with 5-cylinder engines (VIN code 62). The software on these cars may be defective and not alert the driver if the engine goes into a low pressure situation. Obviously, without warning that the engine is low on oil, the driver will not remedy the situation and continue driving until the engine stalls or seizes, which could cause a serious crash.

Volvo has said it began notifying owners in late December, and the process should continue through early January.

The software will be updated/fixed for free to allow it to recognize low oil pressure and warn the driver accordingly.  Owners can contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 with any questions or concerns.

Lexus Has No Plans For Sub-$30K CLA Competitor test 1-1

The sub-$30K entry level segment has been a fertile planting ground for luxury car makers of late, sprouting such cars as the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3. Lexus has no plans on doing any planting, however, telling Auto News that it will leave that end of the market to the mainstream brands.

"We will not head down below $30,000," Lexus chief Jeff Bracken told Auto News during an interview. "We have Toyota and Scion to handle that price level for us."

New Ridgeline Pickup test 2

Honda revealed this week that a next-generation Ridgeline pickup truck is in the works. It plans to get the new truck to market within the next two years and has flashed a teaser rendering of what it will look like.

Since launching in 2005, the first-generation Ridgeline has had a unique look in the pickup market, with its short, funky bed. It's also provided customers with a five-seat cabin, half-ton truck capability, a closed-box unibody platform, an In-Bed Trunk, and a dual-action tailgate. The generation will reach retirement by the middle of next year, paving the way for a new design.

Michelin Recalls 1.2 Million Tires

Michelin Recalls 1.2 Million Tires test 1-1

The Michelin man has decided to recall 1.2 million of its LTX M/S tires, specifically size LT225/75R16 115/112R LRE. These tires have typically been used on many Fords, as well as light trucks, RVs, vans, and pickup trucks. It seems these tires may be susceptible to tread separation, which, of course, is extremely bad. If this happens, a crash will almost be impossible to avoid. The production dates for the tires in question are January 10, 2010–June 23, 2012.

Michelin has said it will notify all owner and dealers beginning next month, and will replace these defective tires for free. Owners may contact Mr. Michelin at 1-800-231-5893 with any questions.

Corvette To Introduce the 2015 Z06 in Detroit test 1-1

Chevy plans to carry its 2013 barrage of sports and muscle cars at American auto shows into 2014. It all started at the 2013 North American International Auto Show with the debut of the highly anticipated C7 Corvette Stingray. The Corvette hard-top was officially joined by a convertible at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show a couple months later. Chevy turned its attention to the Camaro—specifically the Z/28—at the New York Auto Show, and it showed some tricked-out versions of both the Corvette and Camaro at the recent SEMA Show. Now it's turning its attention to 2014, where it will start off the year with yet another big Corvette debut, showing the 2015 Corvette Z06 package in Detroit.

Honda Recalls 344,000 Mini Vans

Honda Recalls 344,000 Mini Vans test 1-1

Honda has issued a recall of its Odyssey models built between August 8, 2006–September 8, 2008 which encompasses most 2007 and 2008 models. The recall totals a whopping 344,187 models in all and is due to a potential malfunction of the car's software. This potential defect may cause the Vehicle Safety Assist System (VSA) to engage the brakes unexpectedly and forcefully. What's worse yet is that when the brakes are applied by the VSA, the brake lights do not light up, which could cause a potentially fatal crash.

Unfortunately, replacements parts for this recall will not be available for at least another six months. Honda has said they will notify owners of the potential problem and include instructions on how to avoid having the car brake unexpectedly. Obviously when parts become available, Honda will notify owners immediately and set up a free repair of the issue. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 with any questions they may have.
