Slugfest Continues, Durango Swipes Explorer (Video)

On: Tue, Mar 27, 2012 at 10:17AM | By: Chris Salamone

Dodge Durango test 2

During the past few years we saw automakers come together with a sense of urgency. People weren’t buying too many cars and, as a result, we had an advertising cease fire. And then Super Bowl 2012 happened. After a string of successful months, GM thought it prudent to get back on the competitive bandwagon and suggest Ford trucks might not be able to handle the post-apocalyptic world. Since game day we’ve seen the Big Three go back and forth, shedding their recession-induced docility in favor of good ole’ American prizefighting.

In a recent blog post, Dodge spoke loud and clear – claiming the Durango includes Spiderman-like power and responsibility requirements. To the delight of all, Dodge also felt compelled to attach a Ford Explorer to the Durango’s already extensive baggage train.

Mecum's March Madness Part 2: Another Round Of Big Rigs, Only This Time They're Classics (And USEFUL!)

Here’s something for you if you’re a truck person (I hear there’s a cream for that now, BTW) looking to make a statement at your local Show ‘N’ Shine with something bedded and breathtaking, but you’re looking for something classy without looking like you had too much time and money to burn.

[For THAT kind of statement, see my earlier article.]

And you don’t want anything newfangled—these are classic car shows, remember—so anything built after Ike’s first term is right out, just as anything foreign-built at any time is Communist and against God, the flag and your mom’s apple pie.

But it should be practical, too. Any yahoo can buy an old pickup, but what if someone at the show required 1970s-era medical attention? Or milk? Or a, incline-bed tow? You could've been the hero in those situations if only you had the vehicle for it. Well, fear not. Mecum’s late-March Missouri sale has just what those improbable situations require, plus a few that are great to have just-in-case. You never know...

Jaguar To bring Its "ALIVE Driving Experience" To A City (Possibly) Near You

On: Fri, Mar 16, 2012 at 4:00PM | By: Andrew W Davis

Jaguar Alive Driving Experience logo test 2

In an effort to “reestablish the storied British brand among luxury consumers in a new modern context” the fine folks at Jaguar are taking their “Jaguar ALIVE [sic] Driving Experience” on the road, starting at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, AZ, April 13-15.

They say that this “multi-day brand event invites consumers to learn about and drive the company’s full model line-up with professional drivers, view heritage Jaguar vehicles and fully experience the brand in a dynamic setting.”

I say it’s an opportunity to immerse one’s self in everything Jaguar, including serious seat-time behind the wheel of each model—from the XF and XJ sedans to the XK coupe and convertible—they make.

Celebrity Apprentice Affirms Buick Brand Confusion

On: Tue, Mar 13, 2012 at 11:22AM | By: Chris Salamone

Debbie Gibson test 2

Unlike a few years ago, Buick is a company with a lot of momentum going forward. The Regal has been universally accepted as an impending classic, the Verano shares DNA with an already superstar GM product (Chevy Cruze), and the soon-to-be youthful Sonic-based subcompact Encore all define a brand lineup which has undergone substantial evolution. Indeed, for the first time in a long while Buick, as a brand, looks to have a sunny financial forecast. Then Sunday’s episode of The Celebrity Apprentice aired.

But the problem with Buick’s brand messaging on Donald Trump’s wildly successful celebreality show wasn’t the fault of the program’s cast, Mr. Trump, or the quality of Buick’s Verano – the vehicle which happened to be showcased. Buick’s brand confusion came from a much larger, more systemic, issue. At least on the televised recording, Buick’s executives failed to specifically address what type of brand concept the celebrities should focus on.

Subaru Clear-Cuts Entire Electronic Forests For Its 2012 "Dynamic Brochures"

On: Wed, Mar 7, 2012 at 11:30AM | By: Andrew W Davis

Sorry, Subaru, but you were asking for it.

I'm a die-hard paper man—in most senses of the term—and as such I would rather get covered in toxic inks and be buried beneath tons of dried tree pulp than stare into this soulless flickering picture-box and “Face” or “Twit.”

So imagine my surprise when I discovered—admittedly via an online press release—that you are happy as all get-out with yourselves and your spiffy new “Dynamic Brochures” despite the fact that all you still have no way to even approximate the paper brochure “experience” electronically!

Toyota Blasts CNN's Revisiting Of "Unintended Acceleration" Issue As "Irresponsible" And "Grossly Innaccurate"

On: Tue, Mar 6, 2012 at 9:53AM | By: Andrew W Davis

Toyota Blasts CNN's Revisiting Of

Here’s how Toyota put it in its March 1 press release:

“In the face of overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary, CNN has irresponsibly aired a grossly inaccurate segment on Anderson Cooper 360 that attempts to resurrect the discredited, scientifically unproven allegation that there is a hidden defect in Toyota’s electronic throttle control system that can cause unintended acceleration.”

And it gets uglier from there....

Gas Price Hikes And Used Car Blues

On: Mon, Mar 5, 2012 at 12:03PM | By: Chris Salamone

Gas Blues test 2

A particularly savvy reader recently submitted an interested query: “I would love to see a blog about the rapid moving stats of trade in SUVs and compact car purchases. The gas hike is early this year, how is it impacting the pre-owned market.” As you might expect, nailing down market trends relative to gas price influence is a difficult task – especially so early in the year. But we’re always up for a challenge.

Fortunately or not, depending on your perspective, the premature gas price increases we’ve experienced have generated more than just oodles of critical media attention. Fuel efficient new car sales have also soared.

Volt Owner Responds Via Gun Rack

Chevy Volt Owners Demonstrates Vehicle Versatility test 2

Last week, republican candidate Newt Gingrich made an interesting statement. As Mr. Gingrich began to discuss President Obama’s policies, particularly in reference to drilling for America-sourced oil, the conversation became electric…literally.

After positing that the Obama administration was trying to force smaller vehicles and electric cars, like the Chevy Volt, on Americans, Newt attacked the Volt’s practicality through a previously unconsidered character trait. Sure, we’ve discussed the vehicle’s safety, electric range, cost of ownership, and a long list of other debatable Volt features. But never before have we noted the Volt’s ability to carry the lifeblood, nay the font, of American patriotism: guns.

Mysterious Spy Shots Emerge, Covert Ford Ranger?

On: Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 2:44PM | By: Chris Salamone

Mystery Truck test 2

Just today, one of the super savvy bloggers at Inside Line posted spy shots of an unknown truck seen in the greater Los Angeles area. Thus far only a few small clues exist which help identify this modern day mystery machine. Needless to say, the vehicle’s heavy camouflage and metal bed make the labeling process a more difficult task, but never fear.

Michigan manufacturer plates create a strong case for this being a product of the Big Three.

Mike Magrath, from Inside Line, speculates that the vehicle could be about the size of a Toyota Tundra, but the front might be considered to follow a Dodge aesthetic. But, if you ask me – a risky decision generally – these images show a commercial variant of the future Ford Ranger.

SNL + Clint Eastwood = Best Spoof Ever (Videos)

On: Wed, Feb 15, 2012 at 11:55AM | By: Chris Salamone

SNL's Bill Hader as Clint Eastwood test 2

After Clint Eastwood’s “Halftime in America” spot aired, Fox News fans everywhere collectively cringed in discomfort – well except in the UK and Canada, where Fox is banned. Many spectators were left inspired, but perhaps just as many felt confused by Eastwood’s supposed Chrysler endorsement. In our time of political jockeying and accepted corporate intertwining with the government, people raised questions about the advertisement’s intended goal. Was Chrysler selling cars or Obama’s 2012 candidacy?

As has become something of a norm in the United States, we feel compelled to be distracted or laugh at our present situation, much like the Roman Empire’s emphasis on satire or overly-aggressive sporting events. Which is what makes SNL so ridiculously entertaining: the wackier our society gets, the more material there is to comment on. Take the music videos of the 1990s and early 2000s, for example. These look like the inspirational blueprint for SNL’s vastly popular Lonely Island series. And Clint Eastwood’s original spot provides the perfect backdrop for a little SNLification. Nothing says ‘spoof’ like an aging gunslinger giving a pep talk.

Smoldering Kia Soul 'Red Rock' Edition Oozes Style

On: Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 2:29PM | By: Chris Salamone

Kia Soul Red Rock Edition test 2

Unfortunately for most subcompact or compact car buyers, the range of vehicle color options is usually pretty limited. There are exceptions, of course, with Mini and Fiat. But for the most part we’re stuck with vehicles offered in Satin Pearl While, Radiant Red, and the like. Kia, on the other hand, has taken some big risks with their most youthful vehicle, the Soul: from highlighter green, appropriately labeled Alien, to the last six special edition Soul variants which offered wacky colors and accessories to boot.

And the company’s latest seventh special edition Soul tops them all. Just a few days ago, Kia Motors America announced the production of an all-new Red Rock Soul which takes inspiration from the epic rock formations found in the Southwest United States – featuring a snazzy color theme and premium features.
