Chevy And Nissan Benefit From Plug-In Buzz

On: Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 9:10AM | By: Chris Weiss

Chevy And Nissan Benefit From Plug-In Buzz test 2

Both the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf hit the market nearly a year ago. The country's two cleanest cars have been in a sales race, with both hoping to reach around 10,000 sales or so by the end of the year. Chevy benefited from a stronger start, but Nissan picked up, passed Chevy by and hasn't looked back.

The sales rivalry has caused a war of PR spin, but there's one thing that executives at both Nissan and Chevy can agree on: plug-in vehicles have been good for brand image and business.

Fuel? Where We're Going, We Don't Need Fuel: DMC Plans Electric DeLorean For 2013

2013 DMC DeLorean EV test 2

Start reworking those flux capacitor schematics, saving up for Plutonium (available in every corner drugstore), and finding time-period specific pink cowboy shirts. The DeLorean DMC-12 is back, and better than ever. Although it’s easy to imagine that any modification to the DeLorean would make the vehicle better than the original, this EV version looks like something special.

At the International DeLorean Owners Event in Houston, Texas last weekend, DMC announced the company’s official plans to produce an EV. DeLorean Motor Company, recently reborn in Humble, Texas, intends to use a 260 horsepower electric motor and add a few much-needed interior updates. As for the exterior, expect to see some modern gadgetry blended into the original design. For example, the front grill hinges open to reveal an electric charging port.

Seven Automakers Agree To EV Charging Standard

Seven Automakers Agree To EV Charging Standard test 2

Think about the past several cell phones that you've had. If they were different models from different manufacturers, chances are good that each model had an entirely different charging port. Now think about your laptop, tablet computer, MP3 player, e-reader, and other portable electronics—they all have different types of charging ports. So when you go on vacation with several of them, you have an entire section of your suitcase filled with different adapters.

Now imagine a world where every portable consumer electronics device has the same type of charging hardware. You could bring all your favorite gadgets wherever you need to go, invite all your friends to do the same, and bring a single adapter or two to charge them all. While cell phone makers have made some progress toward a universal charging standard, we have yet to see it trickle down.

Luckily, the auto market is being more proactive. Seven major automakers agreed to universal EV charging hardware this week, meaning that you won't need any special kind of adapter to charge your vehicle and public charging stations won't need to invest in seven different types of chargers.

Ferrari CEO: Enzo To Get V-12 And Carbon Fiber Chassis test 2

One of the car's on our "can't wait" list is the Ferrari Enzo successor, which will debut next year. The car will reignite the F40, F50, Enzo blood line and promises to be one of the most exciting supercar debuts of 2012.

Given the excitement surrounding the flagship sports car, there has been no shortage of rumors and speculation on the model. Rumors have typically ping-ponged between the Enzo successor going with a V-12 engine ,as its last predecessor had, or digging down deeper into the playbook and reintroducing a twin-turbo V-8 like the F40 used. Well, according to Ferrari chief Amedeo Felisa, it's all V-12.

2014 Acura NSX Going Hybrid?

2014 Acura NSX Going Hybrid? test 2

In August, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito admitted to the long-rumored NSX revival, adding at the Frankfurt Motor Show that the company is looking to build a new type of NSX with a dramatic power-to-weight ratio. According to new reports, Honda's next-gen NSX will launch in 2014 and may feature a hybrid powertrain.

According to an Auto Express report, the 2014 NSX will combine two Honda projects into one. The car will get design influence from an Acura-badged supercar to appear in the upcoming Avengers movie (spied in NY's Central Park in the picture above). A car similar to the movie car will sit atop an all-wheel-drive, hybrid platform inspired by the 2001 Dual Note 4WD concept, which featured a 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine driving the rear wheels and two, wheel-mounted electric motors up front. The engine and motors combined for around 400 hp in that concept.

GM Consolidates Engines, Electrifies Spark

GM Consolidates Engines, Electrifies Spark test 2

Just moments ago, GM announced the company’s plan to consolidate their global family of small-displacement gasoline engines over the next few years in pursuit of reducing manufacturing complexity, improving fuel economy, while increasing quality and performance. Three engine families will soon become a single uber group, encompassing more than 2 million engines per year by 2020.

And that’s not all. During a Chevrolet press conference held via live webcast, the company also mentioned plans to bring an electric Spark to market and introduced a facelift for the newly minted American super sub-compact. No word yet on vehicle range or cost.

Shoom! Heathrow Puts Laser-Guided Pods To Work

ULTra Pod System at London's Heathrow test 2

It’s no secret that airport efficiency has become something of an impossible dream in the last decade. And yet, the BAA (British Airport Authority) recently commissioned an automated, battery-powered pod system named ULTra intended to minimize traveler transport time while simultaneously reducing airport costs. Starting with London’s Heathrow Airport, the first phase of the ULTra network will initially connect two car parks with Terminal 5. Total travel time is about 5-6 minutes, over 1.2 miles.

Reuters reports that a seemingly-futuristic pod system has been something of a dream for British engineers over the last 60 years. Back in 2003, those bleary-eyed dreamers received some vindication. The BAA formally evaluated the long-term transportation needs of Heathrow to ascertain options with (1) low emissions, (2) high level-of-service, (3) efficient use of space, and (4) value. The study’s conclusion: pods are the only practical solution, “providing a 60% improvement in travel time and 40% operating cost savings” over traditional rail or bus options. After years of planning and negotiation, in 2009, BAA and ULTra PRT finally entered into an operating and maintenance contract intended to last 20 years.

GM And BMW To Partner On Green Tech

GM And BMW To Partner On Green Tech test 2

Green technology is a multifaceted challenge facing automakers today. With governments tightening emissions restrictions, automakers must find a way to make cleaner cars. But with green technologies like batteries and hybrid systems expensive to develop and not necessarily all that fast to catch on in the market, green technology R&D is a major investment that won't necessarily pay off for years.

One of the strategies many automakers are using in cleaning their fleets in a cost-effective manner is teaming up with other automakers and pooling research dollars. The latest partners are GM and BMW.

TOTO Neo test 2

As Japanese toilets become increasingly bacteria free, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing, one toilet manufacturer seeks to produce the ultimate human waste receptacle. TOTO, Japan’s largest toilet maker, aims to halve their CO2 emissions in bathrooms by 2017. In support of that, the company issued the TOTO Green Challenge which features a 600-mile cross-country tour via a toilet-powered motorcycle nicknamed Neo. By toilet-powered, we mean BioGas. And by BioGas, we mean feces.

Neo is a motorcycle powered completely by human excrement. The vehicle finds fuel in noxious fumes converted from the driver’s recently deployed bombs—giving new meaning to our previous notions of bathroom availability. Indeed, provided the driver has absolutely no shame, she can literally go whenever and wherever she wants. In this case, our hypothetical driver is female simply because TOTO chose a female to drive their waste harvester across Japan! Let’s hope that jumpsuit has a rear hatch.

Nissan Leaf Widens The Gap With Chevy Volt

Nissan Leaf Widens The Gap With Chevy Volt test 2

Though September proved to be a better month-over-month for the Chevy Volt, Nissan handily outsold Chevy and increased its overall sales lead. Nissan has now sold nearly double the number of Leafs as Chevy has Volts.

Nissan Leaf sales dropped in September, but still performed admirably at 1,031 units (versus 1,362 in August). Chevy, on the other hand, more than doubled month-over-month sales, leaping to 723 from 302 in August.

Chevy still lagged well beyond Nissan in total sales for the month, and Nissan widened its sales lead. Year-to-date sales are now at 7,199 Leaf models to 3,895 Volt models.

Tesla To Build Quicker Model S Sport

Tesla To Build Quicker Model S Sport test 2

Tesla was the first real automaker to show the world that vehicles can be electric, sexy, and fast all at the same time. Unfortunately, the car that proved that is close to retirement. The Model S, which will replace the Roadster as Tesla's only car, has two of those qualities—sexiness and electric powertrain—but lacks the speed and performance of the outgoing Roadster. But Tesla will fix that problem by offering a higher performance sport version of the sedan.
