New Lexus IS Sedan Coming To Detroit Next Month test 2

Lexus announced this week that it will be debuting the new IS at the 2013 North American International Auto Show on Tuesday, January 15. For those that don't follow auto shows, the NAIAS is known more simply as the Detroit Auto Show.

In a brief, three-lined press release, Lexus describes the new IS: "Inspired by the acclaimed LF-CC concept and with design cues of the LFA, the new IS has been completely redesigned, inside and out."

Ford Fusion Named 2013 'Green Car Of The Year'

Ford Fusion Named 2013 'Green Car Of The Year' test 2

The Ford Fusion was awarded the title of ‘Green Car of the Year’ by Green Car Journal today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I sense you are surprised. “The Ford Fusion? An American midsize sedan?” That’s right. Considering that previous winners include the Chevy Volt (a plug-in hybrid) and Honda Civic CNG (a natural gas-powered compact car), you’re probably not the only person left scratching their head. So what was it that made Ford’s new midsize sedan stand above other notable contenders (such as the all-electric Nissan LEAF)?

EPA Kicks Hyundai And Kia Out Of The 40 MPG Club

EPA Kicks Hyundai And Kia Out Of The 40 MPG Club test 2

As is evident in competitive sports, where top athletes (we're looking at you Armstrong) are quietly but consistently breaking rules and ethics to get ahead, sometimes winning requires an edge. Hyundai may be the most fuel efficient brand in America, but it's been cutting a few corners to maintain that distinction. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently found that the Korean automaker overstated fuel economy claims. The agency found discrepancies between its own audit and the numbers given by the automaker. Hyundai and Kia will be busy taking the proverbial red marker to fuel economy stickers as a result.

Toyota Recalls 669,000 Prius Models

Toyota Recalls 669,000 Prius Models test 2

Toyota has issued a recall of its famous hybrid, and quite the recall it is. 669,705 models in all, encompassing five model years of production (2004-2009). It seems that these Prius models may have a steering shaft assembly that has been built with metal splines that have not been made with the appropriate amount of hardness. Due to that apparent manufacturing defect, these splines have the potential to simply fail after an indeterminate amount of time. If they fail, it could cause the driver to lose control of the car's steering.

Toyota has said it will begin contacting owners next month and will replace the splines for free if they deem the parts to be defective. Owners can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 with any questions or to set up an appointment to have their Prius inspected.

Orlando Festivals Of Speed November 30 - December 2 test 2

Last June, I told you to mark your calendars, and now, the time has almost arrived. The Festivals of Speed will be returning to Orlando, Florida November 30 - December 2.

If (like me) you're not a big fan of cold weather, then Orlando is the place to be come early December. And (again, like me) you enjoy delicious food, wine, cigars and stunning exotic cars, planes and boats, then Orlando is the only place to be! So even if you forgot to mark your calendars back in June, it's not too late to make it out to the Festivals of Speed.

There you’ll find the sights, sounds, smells and tastes you’d expect from the Festivals of Speed:

Friday (November 30), it all kicks off with the Luxury Lifestyle Jet Port Reception featuring delicious foods and drinks, a silent auction and poker tournament benefitting the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, a high-energy jazz orchestra and – of course – a collection of exotic cars at the Orlando International Airport.

Saturday (December 1st), the Festivals host an exclusive Wine Connoisseurs’ Dinner and Louis XIII de Rémy Martin tasting experience.

And Sunday (December 2nd), the Festivals conclude with the Motorsports Collection Display of more than 300 exotic cars, motorcycles, boats and aircraft at the beautiful Grande Lakes property.

Read on for more information ... and see you there!

Toyota Prius May Get Sportier

Toyota NS4 concept test 2

Limited size, frumpy styling and great gas mileage - it's a formula that's been defining hybrids and electric cars since they've launched. No car better exemplifies this than the original lean, green machine, the Toyota Prius. The hybrid's styling is enough to draw snickers from strangers and jokes from friends, but its 50 mpg makes drivers plenty content to ignore any negativity from the peanut gallery.

Prius drivers of the future may get the best of both worlds. According to a Toyota executive, the next-generation Prius may trade in the small-hatch shape for something with more visual appeal.

Lexus LF-LC Concept Looks Happy In Blue

Lexus LF-LC Concept Looks Happy In Blue test 2

We already knew the Lexus LF-LC was quite a looker, but a new coat of blue paint shows that it looks good in whatever it's wearing. Lexus debuted the LF-LC Blue concept at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show, keeping chatter alive about a concept sports car that might eventually see production.

Lexus debuted the original LF-LC - which looked mighty fine in red, too - at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, later hinting at the possibility of production. For the Australian show, Lexus covered the car in Opal Blue. Not that it needed an excuse for the luscious paint, but the color is actually linked to Australia by way of the semi-precious opal stone found in the Outback.

Chevy To Repair Software Glitch On 4,000 Volt Models

Chevy To Repair Software Glitch On 4,000 Volt Models test 2

You know how software requires constant updating and can quickly render your computer a useless block of plastic? Well, with automobiles relying more and more on electronics, we may be in for a future where software does the same thing to our cars. GM is currently dealing with one such glitch on the Chevy Volt.

According to the Detroit News, GM has FedExed letters to some 4,000 2013 Volt owners about bringing their hybrids in for a free software update. A problem with the software threatens to shut the Volt engine down during driving, requiring owners to pull over, shut the car off, and restart the engine several moments later - obviously more than just a minor inconvenience while driving. According to the newspaper's information, the brakes and steering continue to work and the problem only affects drivers that make use of the Volt's delayed charging function.

Honda To Unveil Production NSX In Detroit test 2

When it first revealed the concept NSX at this year's Detroit auto show, Honda said that it planned to get the car to market within three years. So we weren't expecting to see the production NSX for another couple years. However, the latest reports say that Honda will have it ready in a few short months.

Electric Kia Soul Rumors

Electric Kia Soul Rumors test 2

Kia will soon offer an electric version of its venerable urban box, the Soul, according to new reports this week. The electric Soul will follow the launch of the next generation gas version within the next two years.

What the electric vehicle market needs is more cars with style and, dare we say, it...soul. The Kia Soul certainly isn't for everyone, but compare it to the Mitsubishi i-Miev or Nissan Leaf, and all of the sudden, it doesn't look so bad.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive test 2

When you drive a Mercedes-Benz, you aren’t trying to blend in with the crowd. And you won’t blend with much if you drive the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive. Mercedes went to extensive lengths to make sure that the gas powered equivalent had nothing on the electric powered version. In fact, the SLS AMG coupe is the fastest electric car available on the market today.

With 740 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, the electric version edges out the gas version with its 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. Although leading in power, the Electric Drive achieves a zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds compared to 3.8 seconds for the V8 motor. Top speed for the Electric SLS AMG is electronically limited at 155 mph vs. 197 mph for the V8. But who’s keeping score?
