Tesla Announces Its First Profit

Tesla Announces Its First Profit test 1-1

When it comes to building awesome, lust-worthy, high-performance electric cars, Tesla has experienced success for years. But when it comes to making money on those electric cars—like the 'more money than I spent to make money' type of money—it has had less success. It has failed to turn a profit for the entire 10 years that it's been in business. Until last week. In a letter to shareholders detailing its 2013 Q1 financials, Tesla announced its first profit ever.

First Electric Off-Roader Racing in Baja test 1-1

The National Off Road Racing Association (we'll call 'em NORRA from now on) announced last week that for the first time ever an all-electric off-road vehicle would race in its Mexican 1000 hot rod race, which is underway now. The rally, which is open to vintage and alternatively fueled vehicles, provides an interesting test bed for EVs, which suffer from range issues and performance problems in extreme weather - say 1,200 miles of hot, mouth-cottoningly dry desert in Baja. The SR1 EV1 truly has its work cut out for it.

Chevy Claims 2014 Spark EV the Most Fuel Efficient Car in US test 1-1

It's a little too early to start naming "best ofs" for the 2014 model year, since not every car has launched yet, but Chevy is coming out early and declaring the 2014 Spark EV the most fuel efficient US retail vehicle. The EPA rated the Spark EV at a combined city-highway mileage of 119 mpg-e.

New York City and Nissan Launch LEAF Taxis test 1-1

Given the auto industry's focus on green fuel alternatives, increased fuel economy and decreased emissions, Earth Day is becoming a big media day. The Nissan LEAF, Kelley Blue Book's choice for greenest car in the country, is auditioning for the role of taxi in the world's most famous taxi market: New York City. Nissan and the city announced a new partnership on April 22, Earth Day 2013.

Cadillac ELR Delivers Regeneration On Demand

Cadillac ELR Delivers Regeneration On Demand test 1-1

Brake regeneration is a staple of electric vehicles and hybrids. The technology repurposes the energy usually lost as heat during braking for the purpose of battery charging. Typically this is an automatic process that happens only during braking, but in the new Cadillac ELR, it’s available to the driver on-demand.

The Diesels Are Coming!

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel test 2

Paul Revere made his Midnight Ride through the Massachusetts countryside in 1775, to warn American colonists of the approaching British army, but we bring much better news from the other side of the pond. Instead of a herd of Red Coats, intent on burning your farm to the ground, we’re heralding the arrival of that European institution called ‘Diesel’.

McLaren Releases Performance Specs For Its New P1 Hypercar

McLaren P1 test 2

Supercars are all about imagination. Impossibilities made possible, then wrapped in bodywork that was designed by a 12-year-old on the back of a math book. They don’t have to make sense; they have to make us excited. Hopeful that one day, we’ll be able to buy one for ourselves. And if we win the lottery any time soon, the McLaren P1 will be at the top of our shopping list.

Unveiled a few months ago at the Paris Motor Show, the McLaren P1 has slashes and swoops, butterfly doors, and the coolest orange paintjob that you’ll ever see. This car defies logic, and challenges everything that you normally associate with supercars. It’s a gas-electric hybrid (yep - just like a Prius), but it has a top speed of 218 mph. You can drive it for 6-12 mi (at reasonable speeds) on electricity alone, then the twin-turbo 3.8L V8 will spool up to charge the battery pack (it even comes with a plug-in charger for some extra ‘green-ness’).

How Far Will YOU Go To Impress A Date On Valentine's Day?

When your birthday falls on a gift-giving holiday it’s a double-edged bummer. Not only do you have to buy other people—or a special someone—presents, but they feel obligated to partially (or mostly) ignore the holiday in favor of just celebrating a “generic” birthday.

[Not that I could stomach another stamped sugar “conversation heart” (thirty-plus years of them is more than enough).]

But if there’s one positive thing about a V-Day B-Day it’s this: I’m not held to the same surprise-jewelry-, roses- and chocolate-giving standard as most males. That’s not to say I never had to do anything grand and romantic to win over my lady fair—though after fourteen years of marriage it’s hard to remember what-all I DID do—but I can honestly say I never lied, cheated, stole or “borrowed.”

Then again, I’m not British.

Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force Concept

Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force Concept test 1-1

Mercedes didn't take home the trophy at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge, but it did have arguably the most interesting entry. And unlike competitors that created only renderings, Mercedes built a life-sized model. Mercedes tackled the assignment of creating a highway patrol vehicle for the year 2025 by building a mean, green off-roader. The Ener-G-Force is essentially the G-Class of the future outfitted for all-terrain dominance.

116 Mpg-E Fiat 500e Electric Car Debuts In LA

116 Mpg-E Fiat 500e Electric Car Debuts In LA test 2

Fiat has already told journalists that it did not want to build the 500e electric car and expects to lose money on every model sold. So it must have been with begrudging chagrin that it debuted the new electrified mini car at the 2012 LA Auto Show.

The reason that Fiat bothered with the 500e at all is simple: meeting California's requirements for zero emissions vehicles. As such, the car will only be available in California when it launches next spring. Because electric cars remain a niche market and the 500 itself has struggled in the United States, we don't anticipate that many non-Californians will be heartbroken about the decision.

New Lexus IS Sedan Coming To Detroit Next Month test 2

Lexus announced this week that it will be debuting the new IS at the 2013 North American International Auto Show on Tuesday, January 15. For those that don't follow auto shows, the NAIAS is known more simply as the Detroit Auto Show.

In a brief, three-lined press release, Lexus describes the new IS: "Inspired by the acclaimed LF-CC concept and with design cues of the LFA, the new IS has been completely redesigned, inside and out."
