Review Of The 2016 Kia Sorento: Remind You Of Something?

On: Sat, Jan 9, 2016 at 10:11AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2016 Kia Sorento test 2

It seems that life is, in fact, a circle that does keep on turning. It usually takes everyone (yours truly very much included) to realize this fact, but after a while, it's impossible not to see it. High-waist 1980s-style jeans are back in fashion, as is blue or purple hair. The same goes for skinny ties, Transformers, and even Fireballs have come full circle to become an adult treat to those of us old enough to remember what they were originally. In the past, startup car companies like Honda and Toyota were the smaller tykes trying to play on a professional field. They were faced with impossible odds, and had one or two models to start with as their entrants into the American sales landscape. But, they didn't falter, and, in fact, succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. They were the Rudy trying out for Notre Dame or the Rocky getting a shot against the Apollo. They were runty pups that came from almost nothing to become the top dog or dogs of the automotive world.

Review Of The Honda HR-V: Something For Everyone

Honda HR-V test 2

In the modern world of automobiles, it seems car companies are falling over each other trying to uncover niches in any way, shape, or form they can, all in the name of sales. The idea that "If we build it, they will come" is apparently the prevailing thought among corporate think tanks in recent years. But, over the years, we have seen quite a few cars that have been built that, quite honestly, didn't need to be. Sure, we know there were a few people who bought the Nissan Murano convertible, or the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, or even the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6, maybe. But, honestly, we are pretty certain those six or seven people could've probably chosen something else, and while the price of someone's happiness is up for debate, we are also willing to believe that maybe the buckets of dollars in R&D to create those cars were not justified by their very small sales numbers. But for every car that has come along to fill a gap that wasn't really there, sometimes there is a car that does. Leave it to Honda to build a car we didn't know we may have needed.

2015 Subaru Legacy: Trying To Build Its Name

On: Tue, Jan 5, 2016 at 7:16AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2015 Subaru Legacy test 2

The world of midsize sedans is a brutal market to compete in. The big champs of the segment are the Camry and the Accord, which trade blows year after year battling for supremacy of the heavyweight sales division. But aside from those perennial all-stars, there are some other competitors that have been trying to make their mark against those bruisers for some time. Known mostly for their all-wheel drive systems and, more recently, their rally-inspired WRX models, Subaru has been trying to establish itself as more than just a boy-racer brand in recent years. The model in center stage of those attempts is their midsize model, the Legacy.

2015 Mazda MX-5: What's Old Is New Again

2015 Mazda MX-5 test 2

For those of us old enough to remember 1990, it was the beginning of an era of excitement and fun, questionable fashion and great music, Ninja Turtles and Rugrats, and some new crazy thing called the internet (anyone have an email address with the suffix "@compuserve.com"? And, in the first year of that decade, Mazda debuted their rendition of a very simple but effective car concept:  The two-seat roadster. Fast forward a quarter century and look around. Fashion has somehow morphed back into the 1980s, music is… interesting, people have the internet on their watches, the Rugrats are gone, and the Ninja Turtles are back. In all that time, Mazda has seen its little roadster evolve into a car that is amazingly different and yet the spitting image of the car that started it all 25 years ago.

2015 Subaru WRX: And Then There Was One...

2015 Subaru WRX test 2

It's amazing to think that it has been almost fourteen years since the first WRX hit the US shores and made all of us gearheads yell, "Hey, what took you so long?!" Subaru heard our cheers and decided to unleash the WRX STI three years later, which basically got the entire country enthralled with rally racing. The WRX also inspired Mitsubishi to unveil its own rally racer, the Lancer Evolution. For more than a decade the WRX vs. EVO battle became the modern day Camaro vs. Mustang. Racing improves the breed, and, in that almost decade and a half, the little Subbie has only gotten better with age.

Review of the 2015 Kia Soul: Living Up to its Name!

Review of the 2015 Kia Soul: Living Up to its Name! test 1-1

If we are being honest with ourselves, there are some cars we want to buy; and then there are some cars we… have to buy. Be it because of financial restrictions due to school, work (or the lack thereof), family obligations, or any other number of reasons, most of us have had to come to grips with the fact that, although we may want an M3, perhaps we may have to settle for something a little less… premium.

Review of the 2015 Acura TLX: Best of Both Worlds

On: Wed, Dec 9, 2015 at 9:24AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2015 Acura TLX test 2

For someone who has owned an Acura TL in the past, we can attest that, for the money, it is one of the best cars out there. I have always been impressed with Acura's entries into the luxury market, as they take so many of the drawbacks of other luxury models and make them strengths. Where BMW will make you add each and every item you want as an additionally costed item, Acura makes most of those things standard fare, making the base price a lot closer to the sticker price than BMW or Mercedes.

Review of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata: You've Come a Long Way!

On: Tue, Dec 1, 2015 at 1:58PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2015 Hyundai Sonata test 2

As a member of a family that owned at 1989 Hyundai Sonata, I can tell you that even though I was still in single digits age-wise, I knew then that we had gotten the strange sounding car (I had to be told about a hundred times that no, it was not a Honda), that we chose that car out of necessity and not luxury. It was the best bang for the buck that could hold our expanding family, and, truth be told, it did a very commendable, if not extravagant, job at accomplishing what it was built for.

Review Of The "Hard Chargin" 2015-2016 Charger

Review Of The "Hard Chargin" 2015-2016 Charger test 1-1

If we are being honest with ourselves, America, we haven't been very good at producing many sedans worth talking about. Sad to say, but unfortunately it's true. Over the past few decades, Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler have produced a very minimal amount of four door fantasy cars, and instead have come out with things like the Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu, and the Chrysler 200, all of which leave us simply wanting, and needing, more from our domestic distributors. These cars are passable, sure, but they don't inspire us like some of their competitors from BMW, Audi, and even Acura.
