Six-Wheeled Supercar Gets Real

On: Wed, Dec 8, 2010 at 3:10PM | By: Chris Weiss

Six-Wheeled Supercar Gets Real test 1-1

Yes, six wheels. No typo. The Covini C6W isn't exactly a stranger to supercar circles. It's been in development for the past 32 years and is based upon a race car from the 1970s—the 1976 Tyrell P34 race car. However, between its odd, six-wheel stance and its three decades worth of slogging through development, we would have thought the Covini would never move past the prototype stages. Only it has. Finally. After a variety of delayed production launches, Covini is finally ready to give the world what it [doesn't] desires: a 430-hp, six-wheeled supercar.

Aston Martin One-77 Selling Just Fine

Aston Martin One-77 Selling Just Fine test 1-1

One might think that introducing a near-$2-million car in the middle of down economy might prove to be a bad idea. But so far, it's been working famously for Aston Martin. Aston Martin recently said that it has sold 60 of the 77 examples that it plans to build of its One-77. The price of that model: $1.87 million.

By far Aston's most expensive car, the One-77 has been moving along right on schedule. Not only have 60 buyers committed to the $1.87 million car, but many have also ordered or expressed interest in the Aston Martin Cygnet, a Toyota iQ-based subcompact that Aston introduced last year. After all, you can't drive a 750-hp, $2-million supercar all day every day, why not have a matching commuter for more practical affairs?

Lamborghini Sedan May Make It to Production After All

Lamborghini Sedan May Make It to Production After All test 1-1

There's no roller coaster quite like the high-end supercar market. And we're not talking the Formula Rossa at the newly opened Ferrari World. We're talking supercar rumors, speculation, and executive sound bites. It seems that as soon as one report on a speculated model is gaining steam, a new one comes out that totally negates it.

In this case, the latest report that Lamborghini would still like to build a four-door sports car ala the Estoque concept negates a report that such a car was stomped by the flared-nostriled Bull. It seems that CEO Stephan Winkelmann (kind of an important voice over there in Sant'Agata Bolognese) would like Lamborghini to pursue the model.

New Porsche 918-Based Supercar Concept to Debut in Detroit test 1-1

Well, here's some good news to start your week off right: Porsche is planning on bringing a new supercar concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. Interestingly, the car will not be the next iteration of the 918 Spyder Hybrid, which Porsche confirmed for production in September, but instead, will be a brand new concept that's said to share some components with the 918 concept.

Ferrari Unveils The 458 Challenge test 1-1

At the Bologna Motor Show, Ferrari has grown its track car family with the new 2011 458 Challenge. Maranello teased the car two months ago, and now we have a look from every angle. The track-spec 458 keeps the output of the 458 Italia, but adds a variety of interior, exterior, and mechanical upgrades.

Hennessey's 660-HP Nissan GT-R test 1-1

We're still waiting for the official performance numbers for the Nissan GT-R, but what we do know is that it's more powerful than its predecessor. The next Godzilla earns an extra 38 horses. But in the timeless mix of testosterone, power, and speed, more horses is always better. Hennessey offers a number of ways to boost your GT-R's performance, and its latest is the GTR650. This beast is sure to leave all those sissies in the stock, 523-hp 2011 GT-R bright green.

Lamborghini Showing the Jota to Those That Count Most: Potential Customers

On: Fri, Dec 3, 2010 at 12:04PM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Showing the Jota to Those That Count Most: Potential Customers test 1-1

The Lamborghini Jota is getting palpably close. It seems like every day or two there's another rumor or report about it. Lamborghini already gave us a close look at the V12 powertrain behind its seats; we've seen countless spy photos; the Murcielago was officially put to bed with much fanfare and there's even been an 11th hour name change. Just show the damn car already!

Well, Lamborghini is already doing that. At least if you're a wealthy, pre-existing Lamborghini customer. The Raging Bull is deploying its top staff around the world, showing off the Jota/Aventador to an exclusive group of handpicked customers. Of course, these little gatherings are no-photo affairs, so they're not doing the rest of us any good.

(Aston)ished test 1-1

There are few cars that actually elicit a physical reaction from people when they start up, but the Aston Martin N420 will make a believer out of anyone, gearhead or otherwise. Not like an Aston Martin needed anymore fanfare. Being the go-to car for most James Bond films over the years has all but inducted it into the Hollywood Garage of Fame. However, this new Bond car is one that the bad guys could hear coming a mile away.

Now in its sixth year, the Vantage has been a very successful model for Aston, and has gone through a few iterations bearing the same name in those half a dozen years.  The N420 is actually an improved version of the N400, which was released as a commemoration (and metaphorical company-wide high-five) of their successful N24 hot rod racer entry to the Nurburgring. The original N400 celebrated with a 4.3 liter 400 horsepower V8, but the N420 uses a 4.7 liter V8 that puts out a very predictable, you guessed it, 420 horsepower. The N420 is differentiated from a "regular" Vantage by 19-inch, ten-spoke aluminum wheels with a gloss black and diamond turned finish, rear diffuser, fender vents, a carbon-fiber splitter, and wider sills.

Confirmed: 2013 Dodge Viper

Confirmed: 2013 Dodge Viper test 1-1

I don't know what was more sad: that the Dodge Viper ended production this past summer or that the celebratory last model was covered in a sickly, yellowish-brown paint that just left irremovable scars on my brain. Actually, I do know, it was the latter. Luckily, Dodge chief Ralph Gilles has confirmed that the next generation Viper will be coming in 2013. And from what we've heard so far, it should handily erase all memories of that other Viper.

Mercedes Developing Eco-Supercar To Compete With 918 and Vision EfficientDynamics

Mercedes Developing Eco-Supercar To Compete With 918 and Vision EfficientDynamics test 1-1

It appears there was a good reason the Mercedes Biome concept was a little more flirty with the media than its competitors in the LA Design Challenge: Mercedes is actually working on a production car that will be loosely based on the Biome design. The Biome-inspired car will be Mercedes' answer to eco-supercars offered by German competitors, including the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid and BMW Vision EfficientDynamics.

Next Generation Pagani Hypercar Spied Again

Next Generation Pagani Hypercar Spied Again test 1-1

The new Pagani supercar, codenamed the C9, hasn't exactly been a stranger to the camera lens during its testing over the past year or so. It's been spotted in various locations around Europe and Africa. Some recent spy photos of the C9 show some of the best looks at Pagani's next V12-powered flagship that we've seen yet. What we see is a curvaceous, powerful sports car that is sure to thrill.
