Mercedes To Electrify S-Class

On: Mon, May 9, 2011 at 5:19PM | By: Chris Weiss

Mercedes To Electrify S-Class test 2

Last year, Mercedes-Benz made it clear that the SLS AMG E-Cell that it had been working on was bound for production. The E-Cell will be among the growing field of alternatively-powered supercars (think Porsche 918 Spyder).

Last week, Mercedes indicated that electric power may move down line from the E-Cell to the S-Class sedan. While the German luxury automaker fell short of confirming a full-electric S-Class, it has confirmed plans for other green vehicles.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Coming This Fall

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento test 2

Lamborghini Aventador owners have a real short window for enjoying ultimate Lambo bragging rights. When Aventador deliveries get started this summer, those lucky owners will officially own the latest, sexiest, most impressive Lamborghini hardware that there is. But rumor holds that a few short months later, Lamborghini will begin selling a production version of the Sesto Elemento, an ultra-rare, ultra-light car based upon last year's Paris concept. The car will retail for over $2 million (possibly $3 million) and no more than 20 will be made. Poor Aventador owners.

We already know that Sesto Elemento production is likely. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said so himself.

Official Pics: Mercedes Shows Off SLS AMG Roadster Coming Later This Year

Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster test 2

There has been no shortage of spy shots of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. But this week, Mercedes took it to the next level with the most revealing pictures yet of its upcoming convertible. There is very little camo, no shadows, no weird angles, just a few nice, [low-flying] bird's-eye views of the sporty roadster.

The SLS AMG convertible will make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. And judging by the early start, we suspect we'll see a lot more of it before then.

Is This The De Tomaso Pantera?

To Be Or Not To Be The De Tomaso Pantera? test 2

At the Geneva Motor Show, De Tomaso disappointed the world when it unveiled the Sports Luxury Sedan. You could almost hear the collective grunt of disenchantment. It wasn't so much that the SLS was bad (although it kind of was), it was that De Tomaso is a name that's almost synonymous with one car: the Pantera, an Italian sports coupe from the 80s/90s that has been sorely missed. Seeing as how Geneva was the first time we've seen a Pantera presence in more than half a decade, it would have been nice if it coincided with a re-launched Pantera.

While the SLS disappointed, news of a Pantera revival at the 2011 LA Auto Show later this year brought chins soaring back up. And today, a short spy video gives a glimpse at what is thought to be a camoed prototype of the Pantera.

New One-Off Ferrari Super America 45 Announced

Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta test 2

It's been a while since we've seen a one-off Ferrari special edition. Too long. The last one that I seem to recall is the Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta (pictured), a 599 GTB converted by Ferrari's own Special Projects division to look like the Ferrari in the 1968 film Toby Dammit. That model debuted in late 2009, so it's high time we got a new privately commissioned one-off to gawk at.

Luckily, just such a car will fill that role at the upcoming Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. And it will be just as "super" as the P540. It's called the Super America 45.

Porsche Panamera Goes Diesel

orsche Panamera Goes Diesel test 2

Since introducing the Panamera to the market in 2009, Porsche has been adding numerous variants to the Panamera line, most recently with the Panamera Hybrid in New York. Porsche added one more Panamera earlier this week, when it revealed the Panamera diesel. The latest Porsche four-door makes use of a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel to add to the range and fuel economy of the Panamera line.

Video: Sounds And Sights Of The Zagato Tz3 Stradale

Zagato TZ3 Stradale test 2

It made its grand debut last week, but the sexy, curvy TZ3 Stradale from Zagato was mostly interested in showing off its looks. This week, the TZ3 shows its personality and inside. We get to take a look inside the engine bay and underneath the tires. And we get to witness the special edition's personality through its throaty V8 grumble and on-road temperament. As they so often say, it's what's on the inside that counts.

Zagato Reveals TZ3 Stradale

Zagato Reveals TZ3 Stradale test 2

As rumors predicted it would, Zagato has released a special edition model designed to celebrate 100 years of Alfa Romeo. It decided to celebrate that by building a car based on the Dodge Viper(?). I know Fiat/Alfa and Chrysler/Dodge are all BFF business buddies at this point, but that's been the case for only about 2 of those 100 years. But, I guess Alfa doesn't really have an 8C to build the special edition on, so Zagato did the next best thing.

Since the car is a highly limited special edition that Zagato calls a "design exercise" and "avant-garde car," its underpinnings shouldn't matter that much. More important is its sexy, cherry exterior.

Lamborghini Aventador Promo Video

On: Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 9:09AM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Aventador Promo Video test 2

The Lamborghini Aventador really doesn't need a promotional campaign to make the masses covet it. All they really need to do is say it: New. Lamborghini. That's about all I'd need to hear in order to know that I wanted it. For those that are a little more cynical or jaded, additional information like 700 horsepower and 2.9 seconds to 62 mph should be enough to get them drooling.

But, apparently Sant A'gata Bolognese wanted to see the drool gushing out of mouths everywhere. Because they've given us a promo video that makes us want the Aventador LP700-4 more than ever.

Bentley Continental Supersports Ice Speed Record Mulliner

On: Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 8:56AM | By: Chris Weiss

Bentley Continental Supersports test 2

You know, when I think things like "ice" and "world speed record", the last thing that comes to mind is "convertible." Then again, I suppose ""Bentley would be among the last things to come to mind, too.

However, Bentley did indeed break the world ice speed record (yes, there is such a thing) earlier this year. And it did it in a Continental Supersports convertible. So it's not that illogical to see the all-new Continental Supersports Convertible ISR Mulliner. Bentley will use the limited edition model to celebrate its achievement.

1/4 Strip Tease: GT-R, Z06, And GT500

GT-R, Z06, and GT500 test 2

A lot of people are excited about the new Lexus LFA supercar, and with good reason. Back in 2010 the Lexus LFA defeated the Nissan GT-R in an all-guns-blazing drag race. Despite that victory and loads of media attention since, critics suggest the LFA is overpriced compared to the almost equally athletic, yet $300,000 cheaper, GT-R. Those critics will have even more ammunition to fire against the LFA for 2012 when they see this video which demonstrates how less expensive supercars are equally glorious.

In the April, 2011 issue of Motor Trend three epic supercars were set against each other in a five-figure full speed brawl. What sets these cars apart from other supercars? Simple, they don’t require a major league baseball deal or draining a lifetime savings account to purchase.
