Video: Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition Earns Its Name

Video: Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition Earns Its Name test 1-1

When you designate a 'Nurburgring Edition' anything, you'd better be sure that it's up to the task. And Lexus did just that in racing its LFA Nurburgring Edition around the Nordschliefe circuit of Nurburgring. Finish time? 7:22.85. And that was just messin' around.

Gazoo Racing team manager Akira Iida attacked the Ring before last weekend's 24 Hours of Nurburgring event and logged the time, which would be enough to give the LFA Nurburgring the number 10 spot all time. We say "would be" because the run wasn't an official lap, just a warm up. An official attempt is likely to come later this year and we'd expect the LFA to move up the list even further.

Porsche To Launch Sub-Boxster Roadster

Porsche To Launch Sub-Boxster Roadster test 2

Want a Porsche without much of the Porsche? Stuttgart is reportedly planning on bringing back a sub-Boxster entry level roadster that will be the spiritual successor to the 356. According to an AutoBild report, it will launch within three years or so.

The new roadster, which is being called the 550, is rumored to be under development for a summer 2014 debut. It will base about 8,000 euros below the Boxster at 39,000 euros ($55,400). Along with price, the entry level Porsche will lose considerable horsepower from the Boxster, dropping down to around 200 ponies by way of a small, 1.6-liter flat-six turbo. That engine will be mounted in the middle of the car.

The $2.3 Million Pagani Zonda F Final Edition

The $2.3 Million Pagani Zonda F Final Edition test 2

The Huayra is preparing to officially take over as Pagani's flagship car. Overall that's a great thing; the Huayra is curvier, more powerful, and overall refined from the Zonda. Onwards and upwards. But you still have to be a little sentimental over the end of the Zonda era. It was, after all, Pagani's first offering, cementing the Argentinean/Italian's reputation for rare, exotic hypercars.

Well, if you're currently shedding a tear for the Zonda, there's good news: You have the chance to own one of only about two dozen Zonda F Clubsport Roadster Final Edition models. I should add that you have that chance only if you have an extra $2.3 million ready to devote to a four-wheeled toy.

Bentley Introduces Its Mulliner More-So For The 2012 Continental GT

2012 Bentley Continental GT with Mulliner Classic Pack test 2

If you were thinking of plopping down your $200k on a new 2012 Bentley Continental GT coupe but felt it was too short on carbon-fiber (or “fibre” as those crazy Brits put it) exterior widgets, Bentley has just the thing for you: its new “Mulliner Styling Specification” gear.

Either in full body-kit form as the “Classic Pack” and/or individually-orderable “design features,” the folks at Crewe have gone carbon-crazy. And as if that wasn’t enough, they’re bypassing the usual ride-pimpers to offer a direct-to-consumer 21-inch “Elegant” alloy wheel option, too.

Now you should be forced to do the right thing and opt for it all at once for “just” $29,459, but seeing as how the Conti is Bentley’s “budget” model, they’re giving you skinflints the option to buy some bits by themselves.

Well, of COURSE I know YOU don’t have to ask, as we can both clearly afford it (all). But for all the plebeians out there, details follow…

Another Gallardo? Another Gallardo!

new Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante test 2

Okay, so in case you haven't been keeping up Lamborghini has a few Gallardo models on display. Technically, the newest drop-top was introduced back in November, but honestly with blustery winds and sub-zero temperatures right around the corner, we didn't think that it was the best timing. However, now with summer officially kicked off, there is quite a bit more interest in a nearly 600-horsepower open-air beast. The following is Lamborghini's official press release for the new Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante, albeit with much better timing.

Sant'Agata Bolognese. With the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, Lamborghini is setting a new benchmark in the most fascinating automobile segment of all—the open-top super sports car. As "Performante", the Gallardo Spyder is even lighter thanks to CFRP technology, even more agile and even more dynamic. The new Spyder Performante is an automotive high-performance athlete that combines sheer sporting excellence and extreme performance with that unique open-air feeling that only a soft-top spanning the ten-cylinder power unit can offer. Ultimately, every spin in the Spyder Performante is like a journey into the eye of the storm.

The New Lamborghini! (No, Not That One)

Lamborghini LP550-2 Bicolore test 2

So while the world is celebrating the beginning of the reign of the Aventador as king of Sant' Agata and singing its praises, it just so happens that there is at least one more new kid on the block worth getting excited over.

It may come as a bit of a surprise, but the all-time best-selling Lamborghini is not the Murcielago, nor is it the fire-breathing Diablo, and no, it isn't even the legendary Countach (although the Countach may hold the record for most car posters ever sold). Nope, it's the occasionally underappreciated Gallardo. Yes, really. Since its debut in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Gallardo has given no less than 10,000 drivers ultimate bragging rights. Surprised? Don't be; Lamborghini has successfully done what other car companies have tried to do for years:  Make an old car into a new car without changing too much, but changing enough to warrant some new excitement.

The Polish Supercar Steps Out of the Shadows (with Video)

Arrinera supercar test 2

As promised the Arrinera supercar (world's first Polish supercar) has made its official, early-June debut. The Lamborghini-esque ride looks a little less Lambo in person, but the influence is still pretty clear. We have full video of the event.

Arrinera got some help from none other than Lee Noble in designing the as-yet-unnamed supercar. The car features a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 worth 638-hp, which Carscoop says is, indeed, the Corvette ZR1 mill. It fits that engine snugly inside a tubular steel chassis and lightweight Kevlar and carbon body.

Smaller SLS AMG 911 Fighter Coming In 2014 test 2

The SLS AMG Roadster has just gotten out of the gate, so attention has naturally turned to other upcoming Mercedes ventures; rumors of a smaller, cheaper version of the SLS being referred to as the SLC have been flying for a few months. Now German magazine Auto Bild has come out with a few new details on what the car will be all about and when we'll see it.

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid: 100 Grand Never Looked So Green!

Porsche Panamera S Hybrid test 2

So you're finally in the market for a hybrid. Enough of the 7-Series BMWs and the big S-Class Mercedes, you want something different, something that makes you feel a little better about yourself. But let's face it, after working your way up life's ladder for the past few decades; you can't demean yourself to the likes of a lowly Prius or Altima Hybrid. A Tesla looks like fun, but you still have to pick up the grandkids every now and then or take that extended weekend with the wife at the country club, so, of course, you need your space. So, what are you options? Not many, my friend, not many. But, thankfully, there is at least one new option on the block, and it may be the only one you need:  The 2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. That's right; the biggest Porsche car is now also the greenest.

BMW Frozen Black Special Edition M3

BMW Frozen Black Special Edition M3 test 2

BMW of North America just announced a twenty-car production run of identical 2011 Frozen Black Edition M3 Coupes lined up for the good ole’ US of A. Although the 2010 M3 received similar treatment with the Frozen Gray Coupe, in 2011 the Frozen Black edition will feature red brake calipers, 19-nch GTS wheels, Novillo leather upholstery, red-on-black juxtaposed stitching, “carbon leather” trim, and, of course… matte black exterior paint with gloss black accents.

Lotus Will Build Its Own Range of Engines

Lotus Esprit test 2

The tide of change continues to rise over in Hethel. Lotus revealed late last year that it planned to make a decision on whether to build its own engines for its upcoming sports car expansion. The automaker was supposed to come to the decision in the winter, but apparently it took a little longer to green-light an internal engine production program. What it took was the freeing up of some funds in order to allocate monies toward engine development.

Lotus found the funding it needed from the delay of the Elan 2 + 2, a decision that it announced recently. The automaker decided that the car was just a little too close to the Esprit and delayed its development for a few years.
