Faster Than Advertised: Lamborghini Aventador Doesn't Stop Till 230 MPH

Faster Than Advertised: Lamborghini Aventador Doesn't Stop Till 230 MPH test 2

When Lamborghini launched the Aventador LP700-4, it listed the top speed of its new flagship at 217 mph. That's a solid top speed on its own, but some media testing reveals that the car is actually significantly faster. A German magazine recently pushed it to 230 mph.

Sport Auto tested the Arancia Argos-colored Aventador that we've become quite familiar with on the Hockenheimring track. As you can see clearly from the shot of the car's speedometer in the video below, the testers got the Aventador up well beyond 217 mph, all the way up to around 230 (370 km/h). The testers hit the mark very briefly but surely.

To be fair, they also said that a GPS-based speed check revealed top speed to be 354 km/h (just under 220 mph). That's still above the list speed, though.

Bugatti's Latest Special Edition: Super Sport Edition Merveilleux test 2

Boy do I envy everything about this guy. Not only does the media refer to him by his first name, but he gets a special one-off edition of the world's fastest car for his birthday. That's some James Bond-level stuff right there.

The man is known simply as "Simon" and the car is called the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Edition Merveilleux.

Four-Door, Convertible Supercar? Savage Rivale Roadyacht

Savage Rivale Roadyacht test 2

Just when I thought I'd seen everything there was to see in terms of supercars from random countries, here's a new one: a four-door super-roadster from the Netherlands. It's the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS.

The Roadyacht seems nothing if not unlikely. Supercars normally earn their "super" by keeping weight as low as possible. That means a small, two-seat, two-door configuration. So the idea of a four-door supercar is already a little strange. Then you throw on a removable top, which only adds weight, and it's even stranger (figure they'd make a hard-top version first).

Also, the "Roadyacht" name sounds like the perfect name for a limousine or large, executive ultra-premium sedan. A name that conjures images of huge, slow ships just isn't right for a supercar, GTS or no.

Lotus Previews V-8 Engine, Will Offer Esprit Hybrid Options

Lotus Previews V-8 Engine, Will Offer Esprit Hybrid Options test 2

The hybrid supercar: It's a concept that we're going to see more and more of in the future, both in the form of hybrid power-boosting systems and full-blown hybrid systems designed to increase fuel economy while keeping power and performance up. Perhaps the most iconic upcoming hybrid supercar on the horizon is the 2013 Lotus Esprit.

According to an Autocar conversation with Lotus CEO Dany Bahar, Lotus will offer a hybrid powertrain on the 2013 Esprit. This comes as a bit of a surprise since Lotus is known to be developing an in-house V-8 engine for the Esprit. And why build a hybrid powertrain around a big, dirty V-8 engine?

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster Coming To Geneva test 2

With the Tokyo Motor Show complete, the major auto shows are officially over this year. That means that attention has turned to the auto shows of 2012, particularly the big winter shows like Detroit and Geneva. One of the latest 2012 auto-show rumors is that Lamborghini will unveil a convertible version of the new Aventador LP700-4 at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

A post on the Teamspeed forums indicates that the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster is officially ready and will make its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, which opens to the press on March 6. According to the poster, the actual car looks even better than any of the renderings that have been floating around the Web.

2013 Viper Won't Be A Dodge

2013 Viper Won't Be A Dodge test 2

It's been a tumultuous couple of years at Chrysler. The company was in some deep trouble about two years ago, pulled out of the depths with the help of US government and Fiat investment, and has been on a mission to get things right in its second life. One of the major moves that Chrysler has done under Fiat rule is better delineate and define its individual brands. Now that strategy takes a drastic turn.

If you really think about it, Chrysler has been the most poorly defined auto group in the US, possibly the world.

World's Ugliest Supercar Now On Sale

World's Ugliest Supercar Now On Sale test 2

There are ostentatious, excessive and gaudy cars and then there are cars that are just plain 'WTF were they thinking'. The Anliker "999 Red Gold Dream" Mercedes SLR McLaren is 100 percent in the latter category. It's one thing to cover a hot supercar like the SLR in weird aerodynamic parts and expensive accents, but it's another thing to pretty much destroy the car's styling with a lip gloss-red paint and gaudy gold. This is one of the most heinous pieces of tunage I've ever seen. And if you're wealthy, you now have a chance at owning it.

The car was modified by Swiss designer Ueli Anliker several years ago. The car's modifications are primarily cosmetic with tasteless things like 24-karat gold-plated wheels, ruby-encrusted lug nuts, gold-trimmed interior and ruby-covered drive components. It even has 11 lbs. of gold dust mixed in with its paint. All in all, the 999 Red Gold Dream cost about $5.4 million in parts alone.

Anliker still plans some engine modifications that will push the SLR's twin-turbo V-8 up around the '999' mark. A garish number for an unbelievably garish car.

Acura's Three Detroit Concepts Include NSX

Acura's Three Detroit Concepts Include NSX test 2

Well, there have been years of rumors about two separate cars, but it's finally official: an Acura NSX successor is here. Or at least close to here--Acura confirmed rumors that it will debut an NSX successor at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.

From what Acura has said, the rumors have been pretty spot on. In addition to confirming the Detroit debut, Acura told Inside Line that the NSX successor will use a mid-engined, V-6-based hybrid powertrain. Given that other information from previous reports has been quite accurate, we're pretty comfortable with the idea that the NSX will have a V-6 engine in the range of 3.5 liters along with two electric motors.

Hertz Offers Supercar Rentals... In UK test 2

Forget Times Square this New Year's Eve; London is the place to ring in the new year. We can think of few better ways to get 2012 off to the right start than by getting behind the wheel of an exotic supercar that you ogle pictures of all year round. A staple in the car rental industry is delivering just that opportunity, but unfortunately for US citizens and other foreigners, it's only happening in the UK at the moment.

Hertz has launched Hertz Supercars, a division that rents such cars as the Aston Martin DB9, Ferrari 458 and McLaren MP4-12C. It partnered with Premiere Collection, a boutique supercar rental company, to gain access to a very impressive collection of premium rentals. So you can now rent out a slew of legitimate supercars and premium luxury cars from one of the biggest names in car rental.

Toy Car Hits 60 MPH Faster Than Bugatti Veyron

Toy Car Hits 60 MPH Faster Than Bugatti Veyron test 2

Looking for a unique gift for that special car lover in your life? You probably can't afford to buy him a car that hits 60 mph in under three seconds, but maybe you can get him a toy car that boasts those credentials. While the Traxxas XO-1 is still an expensive gift, it's gotta be the cheapest way to get to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds.

We'd have to call the X0-1 the first 'RC supercar' that we've ever seen. It beats nearly every actual car on the planet to 60 mph, getting there in just 2.3 seconds. For comparison, the Bugatti Veyron hits 60 mph in about 2.5 seconds. So you get a radio controlled car that's quicker than the quickest production car on the planet. Not a bad start.

New Italian Supercar: F&M Mugello

New Italian Supercar: F&M Mugello test 2

Croatian and Australian supercars may make bolder headlines, but what really gets our blood pumping is Italian supercars--even if they happen to come from lesser known coachbuilders as opposed to the established icon-makers. The all-new F&M Mugello reminds us just why the term 'Italian supercar' makes every hair on our arms and necks stand on end.

Italians just have a knack for style. We're not sure why no one else can touch them, but we've come to accept it. Ferraris and Lamborghinis may no longer be the elite of the elite in performance, but they definitely look better than the 1,000-hp supercars that have passed them by.
