Pininfarina Teases Cambiano Concept

On: Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 12:20PM | By: Chris Weiss

Pininfarina Teases Cambiano Concept test 2

I've seen enough sexy-headlight-teasers-turned-horrible-cars to maintain a healthy skepticism about how the car behind an attractive teaser angle will look in full, uncovered form. The latest example was the Detroit-debuted Toyota NS4, which looked great from headlight-only view, promised to provide a look at the latest, sportiest design language at Toyota, but looked pretty awkward when fully revealed.

Prevailing wisdom aside, there's a substantive difference between a teaser from a mainstream automaker and a teaser from an Italian design house. Given the track record of the latter, a sexy headlight teaser should indeed equate to a thing of beauty. So I'm officially excited to see what the Pininfarina Cambiano is all about.

Malaysian Automaker Proton Sold; Is Lotus Next?

Malaysian Automaker Proton Sold; Is Lotus Next? test 2

In a move that's been rumored for several months, Malaysia's state-owned Khazanah Nasional Bhd sold its 43 percent stake in Malaysian automaker Proton. While Proton may not be a relevant or familiar name to the US auto market, one of its holdings--Lotus--is. Lotus' future remains in question with Proton's sale.

According to Bloomberg, DRB-Hicom Bhd paid the equivalent of $410 million for the 43-percent stake, which comprises 234.7 shares. DRB is an automotive assembly and distribution company that works with prominent global brands like Mercedes and Volkswagen. The company is owned by Syed Mokhtar, one of Southeast Asia's youngest billionaires.

The sale brings a new emphasis on questions surrounding Lotus' future. Lotus has been under Proton ownership since 1996, during which time it has not turned a profit. A Bloomberg report earlier this month said that many investors were getting antsy, believing that Proton should sell Lotus.

Video: This Is What It's Like To Ski In A Ferrari

Video: This Is What It's Like To Ski In A Ferrari test 2

Ferrari has been nothing short of emphatic in showing off the all-wheel-drive capabilities of the new FF grand tourer. It's filmed it in every type of slick terrain possible, shown it off in the snowy mountains of Europe and used it as the vessel for a winter driving course here in the U.S. Ferrari's latest FF showcase includes two of its racing drivers, ski slopes in Italy, and red and blue gates.

Last week at Madonna di Campiglio, Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa each got into a Ferrari FF and competed head to head on a slalom course. They used red and blue FFs that contrasted with their respective gate colors.

What followed wasn't exactly a hair-raising feat of automotive cliffhangery, but more of a slow, purposeful course completion that ended in a tie. Watching two pristine Ferraris drive down a slalom course in the shadows of the jagged Italian Dolomites is an experience in itself, however, so the lack of heart-pounding competitive excitement can be forgiven.

Family Fued: Tuned Lamborghini Gallardo Takes on Aventador test 2

Few things in life sting the same way that getting beat up on by your little brother does. Problem for big brothers everywhere is that little brothers tend to have that extra competitive chip on their shoulder. And sometimes little brothers spend hours hitting the bench while big brothers spend those same hours eating Cheetos and playing Call of Duty.

Consider the below video the automotive version of that scenario. A 1,200-hp Lamborghini Gallardo tuned by Underground Racing takes on a stock Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Is it a devastating day for the Aventador? You'll have to read and watch to find out.

Bugatti Veyron Grand Super Sport May Debut In Geneva

Bugatti Veyron Grand Super Sport May Debut In Geneva test 2

The Geneva Motor Show is no stranger to sexy, exotic European-built supercars. In fact, we'd have to call the March show the ground zero for such cars. This year's show won't be an exception to that trend, with cars like a new Gumpert supercar and rumored Lamborghini Aventador roadster expected to be among the new debuts. According to recent reports, a high-performance version of the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport roadster will also be a part of the Geneva festivities.

With the Veyron 16.4 having run through its prouction life cycle, Bugatti is now left to focus on its sole remaining model: the Veyron Grand Sport. Back in the summer, we first heard a loose rumor from the Netherlands that Bugatti was planning to add a more powerful Grand Sport model to its line. An article in Autovisie cited Bugatti/Bentley chief Wolfgang Durheimer as quoting an output figure between the 1,001 hp of the standard Veyron Grand Sport and the 1,200 hp of the Veyron Super Sport.

Haunted Highways: A Series Exploring The Ghosts Of Cars Gone By (Quickly)

Ferrari F40 test 2

If you sit back and think about just how many different model cars have come across the assembly lines, it’s amazing that we remember any of them at all. Sure, you personally might remember your first car, but by-and-large, not too many of us are really emotionally vested in a 1987 Buick Skylark the way you might be. But then there are cars that come along every once in a great while that we as a collective civilized world can appreciate. Cars that are so striking, and so stunning that men and women that have no automotive knowledge whatsoever become awestruck and mesmerized by the mere sight of one of these mighty machines. That list of cars is very short, but it can be argued that at the top of that very short list lies one car, and one car only -- the Ferrari F40.

Hennessey Venom GT Is Coming For Veyron's Record test 2

There's no shortage of supercar marques with the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport in their sights. Bugatti's record had barely been made last summer before other potential contenders like SSC and Koenigsegg started waving their gauntlets around and hinting at an upcoming challenge. In a conversation with Jay Leno, John Hennessey, the mad man behind the 1,200-hp Lotus Exige known as the Venom GT, became the latest to publicly set a goal of beating the Veyron SS's 267.8 mph world record.

2013 Shelby GT500 Is More Than A Camaro-Killer test 2

We can hear you now Chevy fans. Angry and frustrated. Confused and alone. Not more than two months after the announcement of the resurrection of one of the greatest names in Camaro history, the ZL1 -- does the rug get pulled out from under your feet, and your balloon burst in your hand thanks to one little 650-horsepower Mustang. Not only does this new Ford embarrass your chosen pony car, it actually goes a step further and slaps your beloved Corvette ZR1 right in the face. How could they? How could they! Well, fear not GM faithful, we are here to tell you not to worry, and that all of this has happen once (or twice) before.

Bentley SUV Looking Very Likely test 2

The Range Rovers, BMW X5s and Audi Q7s are about to be displaced. If we're to believe the latest reports, the long-rumored Bentley SUV is very close to reality. If true, the Bentley model may kick off a new era of ultra-luxury SUVs.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bentley chief Wolfgang Durheimer expressed confidence in a greenlight and said that a decision is expected in the first quarter of this year. While Durheimer has publicly supported the SUV, the final decision rests with Volkswagen, Bentley's corporate owner.

Durheimer promised that a Bentley SUV would be above and beyond anything currently available, stating, "If we bring this to the market it will be positioned significantly above the vehicles that are currently available in this segment."

Acura Unveils Its New NSX test 2

The Acura NSX has long stood as the ultimate Honda vehicle. Unfortunately, for over half a decade, it's stood as but a memory because Honda stopped building it in 2005.

As of today, the NSX is back. Or at least a concept version previewing what should become a production model brings the NSX nameplate back to Acura. As anticipated, Acura unveiled an NSX concept on the first day of the North American International Auto Show.
