The 2004 VW Touareg V10 TDI -- Proof that "VW Diesel" Wasn't Always a Derogatory Term

VW Touareg V10 TDI test 2

The Touareg: the VW Group midsize SUV for those too poor to afford an Audi Q7 or Porsche Cayenne. Or that's what most people think. And God forbid you mention your Touareg has a diesel. Most people will keep standing there just long enough to drop their gaze to see if you're wearing socks with your Birkenstocks and invent a sick family member/pet/head-of-state they have to visit—like right now—before they sprint away from you.

Maximum Monterey Part 2: Mecum markets a multitude of mega-exotics from... everywhere else! test 1-1

Now, don't panic. I know the list of Mecum's Ferrari/Maserati apex predators alone won't spend all of your quarter-billion-dollar inheritance from your granduncle Archibald, but I promise you will be able to spend it all in one place, between August 18th and 20th, to assemble the greatest collection of modern mega-dollar performance cars as his will requires.

Looking for all the minimalist excitement of an Ariel Atom at a discount AND don't fear death? Then have I got the vehicle for you!

1966 Velorex 16/350 test 2

People in my profession—and outside it, too, I suppose—have always railed against government “interference” in the production of vehicles. Sure, the seat belt was a good idea, but airbags, “safety” bumpers, and—more recently—the laundry list of electronic nannies like automatic braking and stability control?

B-J's and AA's auctions prove that if you dishonor your Heritage you will pay the price. [Buyers, however, won't even offer half of it.]

B-J's and AA's auctions prove that if you dishonor your Heritage you will pay the price. [Buyers, however, won't even offer half of it.] test 1-1

While the car you see above looks like every other “Heritage Edition” Ford GT, this one hides a terrible secret: Somebody invested a fortune into cutting its value in half. Yes, you read that right. Someone bought one of the ultra-rare and ultra-desirable Gulf-liveried 2006 Ford GTs and basically destroyed it in the most pathetically-ironic way: They turned it into a “racecar.”

eBay Motors' Top 5 sales top 9.5 million dollars, including a $1M+ Mustang! USA! USA!

eBay Motors' Top 5 sales top 9.5 million dollars, including a $1M+ Mustang! USA! USA! test 1-1

You know the drill. I spend WAY too much time on eBay Motors looking for the most expensive cars sold over a given period, and I amaze you with what people will spend on cars you'll likely never see.

[Sorry, that was rude. Just book a flight to Los Angeles, camp out in the ritziest part of town, and I'm sure at least a version of one of these cars will pass by your sidewalk encampment.]

A four-speed's forty-eleven parts fragment into forty thousand; fortunately funeral fails to follow

A ruined automatic's innards exposed test 2

It looks like a hand grenade went off in it.”

There are VERY few times when that phrase is GOOD news. And let me tell you, when it comes to hearing it in reference to ANY part of your car, it is bad. VERY bad.

Two Beetles or not two Beetles: With this pair, only you (and maybe some Brazilians) will know

Two Beetles or not two Beetles: With this pair, only you (and maybe some Brazilians) will know test 1-1

My parent's first cars—and second (I think)—were both VW Beetles. This should come as a shock to no one, seeing as how ubiquitous the car was for decades—right up to the 1990s, it would seem, as my high school girlfriend had one right up until her father made her get a more “practical” car (a Geo Metro!).

Just how far gone is TOO far for a car TWO: Flushing away $99k or shrewd entree into a major payday? The new owner lets us know!

Just how far gone is TOO far for a car TWO: Flushing away $99k or shrewd entree into a major payday? The new owner lets us know! test 1-1

You're not a real automotive enthusiast until you've let a project car you had all the plans in the world for go to someone else for a song, only to find that what you sold for scrap value—if you were lucky—was something truly special.

Like WORTH A LOT special.

Barrett-Jackson to feature the four-ton "Thundertaker" at April Palm Beach sale

Thundertaker custom Cadillac hearse test 2

Not that many people say this very often, but it's probably a good thing that I'm not rich. I would, naturally, spend a large amount of my money on cars, which is not a bad thing, it's just that the cars I'd spend money on wouldn't exactly endear me to the rest of my family.

Granted, having the world's largest collection of station wagons wouldn't be the worst thing for them to inherit, but even with the recent—and forecast—increase in values for wagons, chances are that they'd just break even if they sold the lot.

Kia Pays Tribute to America with 6 Crazy SEMA Concepts test 1-1

Kia has certainly made a lot of money in the U.S.A. And to honor one of its biggest markets, they've created four SEMA show cars that give a nod to different parts of our great land. So go grab a Big Mac and a Budweiser, because it's time to tour America... Gangnam Style!
