Infiniti G37S Races A Professional Skydiver (Video)

Infiniti G37S Races A Professional Skydiver test 2

It's early June, which means the days are long, and the weather is getting warmer and sunnier. And it must have been a long winter, because restless souls everywhere are making the most of their time outside by performing acts of skill, courage, bravado and sheer insanity. We saw the Lamborghini Aventador take on an F-16 fighter earlier this week, and now we have another unlikely air-ground race between an Infiniti G37S ... and a skydiver.

We'd imagine that an amateur skydiver would be too concerned with things like falling to instantaneous death to try to race a car on the ground, so Infiniti and Red Bull turned to professional skydiver Jon DeVore in creating the race. The opposition was Monaco Grand Prix -winning Red Bull/Infiniti F1 racer Mark Webber.

Lamborghini Aventador Takes On F-16 test 2

There's something incredibly engaging about supercar races. Years upon years of technology, research, engineering and testing boiled down into a singular moment that answers the most pressing of questions: Which one is faster?

As great as it is to watch two supercars compete on the track, it can be even more interesting when a supercar takes on a jet. Much like the match-up of heavyweight boxer and UFC champion, there's something intriguing about two masters from different genres going head to head. In this particular match-up, the latest Lambo takes on an F-16 fighter jet.

Mercedes SLS AMG Sets World Record For Running Down Golf Ball

Mercedes SLS AMG Sets World Record For Running Down Golf Ball test 2

If you pop open the Guiness Book of World Records and peruse around a while, you'll quickly realize: you can set a world record for just about anything. In the case of Mercedes-Benz, the record is the "longest golf shot caught in a moving car." It may sound trivial, but it's actually a pretty cool feat.

David Coulthard and Jake Shepherd are both professional athletes, but they don't usually get to play on the same team. Coulthard is an F1 driver, and Shepherd is a golfer. But the two recently teamed up for the unlikely world record.

Golf R Fans Faceoff For Ultimate Fan Experience

2012 VW Golf R test 2

The date is set. Volkswagen’s Golf R Ultimate Fan Experience competition will end today, May 14, 2012. Unlike other, gimmicky pseudo-advertisement, commercial competitions, the Golf R Ultimate Fan Experience gives contestants a prize worthy of note: seven days, six nights in Germany with a tour of VW’s global headquarters and an actual test track run on Nurburgring.

Entering the running is as simple as downloading an official ‘Drivers Forever’ application and describing why you want to win in less than 256 characters. As a disclaimer, though, if you need to be reminded that the number 256 is incidentally the same amount of horsepower found on the 2012 Golf R, then perhaps this competition isn’t for you.

Carolla Takes Cake At Long Beach Grand Prix

Adam Corolla test 2

We’ve seen Adam Carolla do movies, standup comedy, pseudo-journalistic auto enthusiast TV shows, and celebreality. We’ve also seen him pick up a healthy appetite for vintage racing. Somehow though, despite frequent at bats, Mr. Carolla has struggled to achieve automotive stardom – following the burnt rubber of industry giants like Steve McQueen or Jay Leno.

But no longer: as of Saturday’s 36th Annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Grand Prix at Long Beach, Adam Carolla has entered the annals of driving greatness by achieving victory despite nearby accidents and a late-stage challenger.

Two Classic Races, One Ticket: Indy 500 And Kentucky Derby Team Up

Two Classic Races, One Ticket test 2

Depending on your disposition and personal history, if you were asked to name the United States' most famous race, you might be inclined to say either the Indy 500 or the Kentucky Derby. The races are the pinnacles of their respective sports, and now they're teaming up to give you all access.

This is one of those promotions that makes you wonder: Why's it never been done? The two events each hold relatively equal prominence in racing lore, occur around the same time of year, and are located about two hours apart in a pretty straight north-south line. A promotional team-up seems so damn logical, yet it's taken more than 100 years to happen (the first Indy 500 was held in 1911 and the first Kentucky Derby in 1875).

I’ve got to hand it to you, Supreme Being; you’ve got quite a sense of humor. You hard-wired us to impulsively run from things that want to eat us, yet you made us unable to resist cuddling them when they’re young. Similarly, you’ve instilled a sense of “know-better” when it comes to owning—and doing—extremely dangerous things. Case in point: the six vehicles I’ve selected from Mecum’s end-of-March sale in Kansas City, MO.

Now you’ve (hopefully) read my earlier features on Mecum’s fearsome creatures, from the article on some classic, practical vehicles from the 1940s and 1950s to the article on the more modern yet COMPLETELY impractical ones. Well, that’s all fine and good if you’re just into trucks. But what if you wanted to kill yourself in something that’s more “fast” than “four-by”?

Well, fear not, for I have just what you need. And if you think you’re missing out because you’re only getting one "car" feature, just check out the stats on this dirty half-dozen: 12 doors, 24 wheels, 48 cylinders and a (claimed) grand total of 4,612 horsepower. Sound good? Damn right! So what are you waiting for? Get to jumpin’!

MotorTrend Gets Wild With Super Wagon Showdown (Video)

Cadillac CTS-V vs. Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG test 2

MotorTrend, the company famous for Subaru Outback adventures and Jeep survival epics, brings the thunder when it comes to automotive journalism. Few companies, if any, are capable of producing such high quality, well composed content and a recent super wagon-on-wagon comparo is no exception. In just over 9:00 minutes of scintillating video or skimming a brief article, viewers will be left with a newfound sense of appreciation.

Wagons, it would seem, can be less embarrassing than we thought, especially the Cadillac CTS-V and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG.

Las Vegas May Get Its Own Nurburgring Track

Las Vegas May Get Its Own Nurburgring Track test 2

The twisty behemoth known as the Nurburgring is perhaps the most famous race track in all the world. Not only does this track complex offer up a destination for full on racing events, its Nordschleife (northern loop) serves as the test bed for performance sports car bragging rights. Nordschleife times are nearly as ubiquitous as 0-to-60/62 mph times and top speeds on spec sheets.

The United States has a lot of race tracks, but it doesn't really have anything like Nurburgring. One motorsports company aims to change all that - by making a carbon copy of Germany's track.

According to reports, Speedway Motorsports, a company that owns and operates such US tracks as Bristol Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway, is currently working toward building a replica of Nurburgring on 8,000 acres of desert outside of Las Vegas. Vegas already has replicas of such icons as the Eiffel Tower and The Colosseum, so why not the 'Ring?

Mitsubishi i-Miev Racecar To Hit Pikes Peak

Mitsubishi i-Miev Racecar To Hit Pikes Peak test 2

The Mitsubishi i-Miev is a lot of things. It's inexpensive (compared to other electric vehicles). It's super efficient (the EPA's fuel economy leader). And, combining those two factors, it's an economical choice for both long and short term.

Two things the i-Miev is not: fast and powerful. The i-Miev puts out 66 hp and has a top speed around 80 mph, but that isn't stopping the company from entering the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with a race version of the electric car.

What Lurks Beneath, Corolla Destroys Strip [Video]

Corolla Sleeper test 2

Pop quiz, what is the single most unlikely car to make an athletic showing on your local drag strip? Aside from a Smart, the third generation Toyota Corolla is probably the next worst option. But not in Australia, the land of recent Frankenstein-like mechanical recreations, this particular Corolla laid waste to the expectations of challengers and onlookers.

Such is the Tao of a true sleeper.

From the outside, the vehicle looks like an off white, straight from the dealership, people hauler which offers no indication of the devious threat lurking within. Upon further inspection, however, viewers might pick up subtle cues of hidden glory – small slicks appear menacingly cute on the vehicle’s rear wheels and few could miss the open hostility of a whining turbo.

To see the Corolla’s full aspect, one must venture further, beneath the confines of the vehicle’s outer shell.
