The Indianapolis 500 is an almost mythical event that holds a great deal of importance in the American psyche. It is like the Super Bowl of automobile racing, with the event taking place on the hallowed grounds of Indianapolis Motor Speedway in our nation's heartland. If you win a car race, that's good. If you win the Indianapolis 500, you are a made man (or woman) forever.

Living, as I do, in Southeast Michigan, I am constantly subjected to Canadian radio stations, with their better playlists, fewer commercials, and just general all-around better listening experiences. Granted, Detroit was/is the home of Motown, but that’s not really my thing. No, when it comes to classic and modern rock—plus pretty much anything else that makes your ears bleed in a good way—you’ve got to set your radio to something Canuck.

So I’m not quite sure why I was so surprised to find two of the most important and sought-after new(ish) Heavy Metal Mustangs for sale in Toronto this weekend, at Collector Car Productions April 5-6 sale in Toronto. Not only do they have a “Mint 1-of-1 Prototype Pre-Production” 2012 Boss 302 for sale, there's a reverse-color 2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca, too.

[Granted, that doesn’t leave you much time to get your papers in order, but it’s not like anybody’s going to care if you’re border-hopping OUT of the U.S., right?...]

If you’re someone who follows eBay car sales on a regular basis—which I’m sure you aren’t—you’d see that the great rise in automotive sales prices at “real-world” auctions aren’t being mirrored by their online counterparts.

Yes, $5,546,234 is a lot of money for just five cars—especially as they sold amidst a sea of rusty Dusters and mold-attacked Cadillacs—but eBay nonetheless seems to attract only high-end new car dealerships’ listing dollars which are meant mostly to move now-out-of-fashion used exotics.

Still, watch things long enough and you’ll find that there are some really, really expensive, to-die-for modern hypercars on eBay every now and again. It just so happens that this time it was five basically all at once. Enjoy!

And so it is that the first of F1’s pre-season tests comes to a close—not with a whimper but with several bangs, as the teams running Renault engines were forced to pack up and leave early, hampered by some fairly significant technical issues. More ill news for defending champions Red Bull, as a series of electrical and heat-management gremlins saw them complete a scant 21 laps over the course of the four-day test. Speculation abounds that the issues inherent in the Red Bull car (christened the RB10) are the result of chief designer Adrian Newey’s overly aggressive packaging of the car’s power systems. Whatever the case, the majority of fans who are sick of seeing Red Bull endlessly march from title to title are understandably sanguine about this season’s prospects.

Today marked the first day that 2014’s flotilla of title contenders were allowed to run on track, and I’m pleased to say that it fit my expectations and predictions to a T. The first of the three pre-season tests began today at Circuito de Jerez, and will be followed by two further tests at Sakhir International Circuit in Bahrain.

For those of us who are fans of the McLaren Formula 1 team, this past season was an exercise in what marketing types would call “managing expectations.”  2013 was McLaren’s first season without a win since 2006 and the first in almost 30 years without a podium. For a team whose motto is “Win at everything we do,” that’s a tough row to hoe. Reasons and explanations (though never excuses) abound but, the fact of the matter is that, McLaren as it stood simply wasn’t good enough. Despite having initial input on the 2013 car (the MP4-28), chief designer Paddy Lowe was poached by Mercedes  early in the season, and the already fundamentally-flawed car clearly suffered from a lack of consistent, effective development as a result.

In a recent interview, autosport.com asked Formula 1 pundit Martin Brundle whether he saw F1 as a sport, a crucible of technical innovation, or a show. He answered unequivocally that it was a show, a spectacle, that like all major sports it existed primarily to entertain. For if there are no viewers, then there are no sponsors, and if there are no sponsors, especially in a sport with such rampant expenditures as F1, then there is no sport. So why on Earth are the powers that be apparently doing their best to make it so unappealing to watch?

I want to discuss sportsmanship; not among sportsmen themselves, but among the fans.  Colloquially, this is also known as “being a decent human being”. Sebastian Vettel has just achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Formula One world championship four times in a row; which puts him in a very exclusive club. So exclusive, in fact, that he numbers among just three others, all of whom firmly sit in the pantheon of All Time Greats. You can’t be the best in the world at something four years straight and not be one of the most highly regarded in your field. Or so it should be.

This weekend marks the beginning of the end for 2013’s Formula 1 season. For those not in the know (forgivable, the sport isn’t especially popular in the US), F1 is the absolute top tier of motorsport. It’s an amalgam of superlative facts and figures: the fastest cars, the biggest budgets, the most advanced engineering, and the most extreme driving talent all come together to form what I consider to be the most exciting sport in the world. Even for those who know nothing about it, the names of some of the top teams might ring a bell: Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren, Lotus, and so on.
