Bertone To Sell A Sextet Of Show-Stopping Sirens

On: Mon, May 16, 2011 at 10:50AM | By: Andrew W Davis

I’ve already covered many of the classic confections due to be sold May 21 when RM Auctions has their sale at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Como, Italy.

And as rare as they all might be, none can claim to be “one-of-one,” nor can they boast having been a show-stopping show car created from one of the finest automotive design houses on the planet, Bertone S.P.A.

Yup, it’s that Bertone, and each of the six vehicles being sold there comes directly from the design house’s own collection. Some, like the Lamborghini Marzal and Lancia Stratos HF Zero, are world-famous and rightly so, while the others are less well-known and, in turn, less expensive.

So if you’re looking to add some crown jewels to your collection and have a thing for Italian design straight from the source, here’s your one and only chance.

Get to it!

Zagato and Aston To Reveal New Concept

Zagato and Aston To Reveal New Concept test 2

Zagato is really making headlines lately. And it's doing so with the biggest, most relevant "As" of sexy, high performance European cars. Following last month's TZ3 Stradale, a celebration of Aston Martin heritage, Zagato will introduce a new concept in conjunction with Aston Martin. Aston released a teaser rendering of the car this week.

Like recent Zagato masterpieces the TZ3 Stradale and TZ3 Corsa, the new concept is meant to celebrate an anniversary. This time it's the 50th anniversary of the DB4GT Zagato, the first collaboration between Gaydon and the Italian coach builder. The new model will make its debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este later this month.

Closer To Lamborghini Sesto Production

Closer To Lamborghini Sesto Production test 2

Just a few days ago, we heard that Sesto Elemento production is already a given inside the walls of Lamborghini headquarters. It appears only a matter of time before Lamborghini makes the announcement. While it hasn't quite done that, anonymous insiders have been doing some gumming about what the Sesto Elemento will look like, and despite being about as conceptual a car as we've ever seen from Lamborghini, it should look quite similar in production as it did in concept.

According to Autocar, company insiders have indicated that Lamborghini is actually in the advanced stages of Sesto development. That report gels with last week's report out of Germany that Lamborghini will look to launch the car this fall.

Mercedes SLS AMG Ambulance Concept

Mercedes SLS AMG Ambulance Concept test 2

If I were in need of emergency medical assistance, the last vehicle I'd expect (or want) to show up is a Mercedes SLS AMG. I suppose it could probably get there a little faster than your average ambulance, but once there, what exactly are you going to do—get scrunched into the passenger seat or trunk?

Luckily for those requiring emergency aid in the future, the SLS AMG emergency medical vehicle is just a concept that Mercedes designed for the RETTmobil show going on now in Germany.

Land Rover Launches Electric Defender

Land Rover Launches Electric Defender test 2

Think you have range anxiety when it comes to well-serviced stretches of local highway? Imagine being stranded by a drained battery deep within the African savanna, leaving you among lions, hippos, and other fierce animals. Not to put a damper on Land Rover's new launch, but that's something that has to be in the back of your mind when it comes to the new Defender EV.

Designed specifically for use in South African game reserves, the Electric Defender Game Viewer Concept Vehicle was developed in conjunction with lithium-ion manufacturer Axeon and Barker Performance, a Land Rover specialist. The model trades out the usual 2.4-liter diesel engine for a 193-hp electric motor wired to a 28.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The combo promises about 55 miles of range.

Jaguar Announces It's Back In The Supercar Business With Its C-X75

On: Sat, May 7, 2011 at 11:34AM | By: Andrew W Davis

Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid supercar test 2

Remember the XJ 220? Jaguar would probably prefer that you didn't. It's not that is was a bad car per se, it's just that so many compromises were made during its for-production development that the original car-show darling, which attracted more blank-check buyers than could be accommodated in 1989, was turned into a road car; people actually sued Jaguar to get out of buying once they saw the production version in late 1991.

Chief culprit was the switch from the concept's big V12 engine and all-wheel drive to a turbo V6 and rear-drive. Granted, what buyers that went through with their purchases got in 1992 was still a high-performance machine—it still set closed-course speed records in excess of the 220 mph its name implied—but the fact that many still lingered unsold in 1997 shows that when you promise a supercar full of superlatives, you better deliver (without spiking the MSRP after delivering half the promised cylinders).

[Boy, if all those who were adamant that a flagship Jaguar had to have a V12 were freaked-out by a V6, reading the specs of the 2013 C-X75 will probably make their heads explode….]

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Coming This Fall

On: Sat, May 7, 2011 at 11:01AM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento test 2

Lamborghini Aventador owners have a real short window for enjoying ultimate Lambo bragging rights. When Aventador deliveries get started this summer, those lucky owners will officially own the latest, sexiest, most impressive Lamborghini hardware that there is. But rumor holds that a few short months later, Lamborghini will begin selling a production version of the Sesto Elemento, an ultra-rare, ultra-light car based upon last year's Paris concept. The car will retail for over $2 million (possibly $3 million) and no more than 20 will be made. Poor Aventador owners.

We already know that Sesto Elemento production is likely. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said so himself.

Out In The Desert With The Jeep Pickup

Jeep JK-8 Independance test 2

Last month, Jeep and Mopar introduced a special kit called the JK-8 Independence. In short, it's a pickup kit that delivers a bed to the back of a Wrangler. It's pretty sweet option for the Jeep Wrangler line, given that Jeep has long lacked a production pickup model here in the States.

Unfortunately, the 2011 Easter Jeep Safari came and went, and we didn't really hear anything else about the JK-8 or other special edition Mopared Jeeps at the event. But a new video clip from PickupTrucks.com takes a closer look at the package in Moab.

Mercedes Benz: Concept A (Plus)

Mercedes Benz: Concept A (Plus) test 2

Mercedes has made a big splash by unveiling its diminutive new Concept A to the auto show circuit. With the understanding that the Smart Car is not exactly a luxury compact, the German automaker is setting its sights on the smaller, luxury segment.

Although obviously a concept car, the Concept A is a hint at the upcoming new A-Class to come out next year. The front-driver will likely sport a blown 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that will put down a little more than 200 horsepower (which is about 20 ponies over the latest European model). Don't be surprised to see a seven-speed automatic attached to this little car. Mercedes just recently developed the new dual-clutch transmission for the C-Class and mounted it to, among other choices, a 1.8-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that makes 201-hp and 229-lb-ft of torque. That combo might just show up in the very near future. There is no talk of a hybrid or electric model just yet.

Cadillac Moving Up Market Into Rolls Royce Territory

Cadillac Moving Up Market Into Rolls Royce Territory test 2

If you want an American-made luxury car of the utmost quality and prestige, chances are you'll be looking at your local Cadillac dealership. But if you want a car of the utmost luxury and prestige, and you're not limiting yourself to American cars, well then, it's a Rolls Royce or Bentley… Maybe a Maybach… But probably not.

Well, if a new rumor proves true, you may one day have the option of a Rolls/Bentley-level Cadillac. Car and Driver reports that Caddy is considering a possible ultra-premium sedan that's of the same caliber.

The magazine's report is based on conversations with insiders and points to the possibility of Cadillac building an RR Phantom-rivaling sedan on top of its rear-wheel Omega platform. The decision is far from made at GM and Car and Driver expresses considerable skepticism that it will ever happen. But it's hard to not be excited by the prospect.

2011 New York Auto Show Buzz

Scion FR-S Concept test 2

Your humble author spent most of the past week at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, and here's a look back at the proceedings.

The biggest buzz surrounded the Scion FR-S Concept. This front-engine, rear-drive sports coupe will likely reach production, although specs are sparse. Toyota did reveal that there will be a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed "boxer" engine and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The FR-S drew raves both for its looks and for the fact that Toyota is taking a chance on a sporty car (even if it might be branded a Scion).
