FPV—Supercharged 5.0-liter Mustang GT test 2

The Australian International Motor Show is typically just a tad too far 'down under' to play out like a Geneva or Paris in terms of scores of awesome concepts, supercars and new production models. But don't think there's no hot, new hardware coming out of Melbourne. The show is going on now, and to prove that there are some exciting dream cars on our favorite island continent, Ford Australia's tuning arm, Ford Performance Vehicles, debuted a fully black Mustang that it calls its "first-ever concept car."

Aston To Build V12 Zagato test 1-1

It appears the cat is out of the bag in terms of Aston Martin V12 Zagato production. According toAutocar, the Zagato was listed on the company's website last week, along with a little disclaimer: "Only a strictly limited run of road going cars will be built." So it looks like Aston is following through on its sexy concept.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics test 2

Batman may be sticking with its Lambo roots, but another action movie franchise has decided to go a little greener in its auto buying. The new Mission Impossible installment will give Tom Cruise a new, green vehicular sidekick—the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. Certainly chosen for its distinctive look and not entirely its hybrid powertrain, the car will definitely look good on the big screen.

Aston Martin AMV12 Design Study test 1-1

A couple weeks ago, we got a teaser look at an upcoming mid-engined Aston Martin one-off from Danish HBH (the company behind the Zenvo ST1). The car will basically be a Vantage V-12 with the engine pushed behind the seats. HBH hopes to have its car ready by next year, and in the meantime, we have what appears to be a mid-engined Aston Martin design study to give us a feel for what a little restructuring might look like.

Polestar Performance Prototype Presages Volvo On PCP?

If you thought "Nova"—which Spanish-speakers could read as "no va" or "doesn't go"—was an interesting unintended translation, wait until Volvo finds out what the acronym for its proposed “performance division” means here in the U.S.A.

Yes, if what many (other) sources are saying is true, Polestar wants future performance Volvos to “get wet” on the “sherm”, as the proposed “Performance Concept Prototype” badges will naturally be abbreviated to read “PCP.”

Yes, the fastest Volvos will wear logos that recall what 60 Minutes and People magazine called the “number one” drug problem in the United States in 1978. I’m not sure why the beloved—by me at least—Swedish automaker is apparently dropping its perfectly-good “R” appellation, but as “crack cocaine” and “methamphetamine” were taken, I can see why they landed on the name they did.

Rolls Royce 102EX test 2

The Rolls Royce 102EX may be the lamest of lame ducks, after Rolls announced that it will not be developing an electric vehicle in the near future, but it's still going to be a presence on the world concept circuit. Rolls engineers are still testing the 102EX, and Rolls PR folks will be transporting the car in continuance of its world tour.

Sedan or SUV? Lamborghini Still Unsure. test 1-1

Previous sound bites from Stephan Winkelmann had all but confirmed that Lamborghini is building a sedan as its third model. But a new Car and Driver report indicates that Lamborghini still isn't 100 percent behind the sedan. In fact, the report brings us right back to last summer, at which point it was reported that Lamborghini was debating between an SUV and a sedan.

Jaguars At Speed And As Sculpture During Goodwood Festival Of Speed

2012 Jaguar XKS-R test 2

Jaguar—in the finest fighting-shape it's been in since the days of its world-ruling D-Types, continues to raise the performance bar only to use it as just another rung on its ladder to ever-greater heights of vehicular ass-whuppin'.

Latest in this powerful-product onslaught is the 2012 XKR-S, which—along with a variety of other vintage and modern Jags—will represent the sign of the cat at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed where the brand is “honored as the featured marque.”

Though billed as “the fastest Jaguar in a generation,” the XKR-S will nonetheless have some seriously stiff competition from its predecessors during the event’s most famous feature, the “action on the notorious Goodwood Hill.”

And who among us couldn’t use a little action?

Latest Mitsubishi i Buzz Looks To Early 2012

 Mitsubishi i EV test 2

Whether or not you love the new Mitsubishi i, or electric vehicles in general, it’s impossible to ignore the palpable hue of anticipation surrounding the latest and greatest in fuel saving technology. Not surprisingly though, the upcoming 2012 Mitsubishi i is fast becoming the poster child for EV practicality vs. greener tomorrow debates. That’s because this new Mitsubishi can travel only 85 miles on a single tank… err, charge. On the flip side, Mitsubishi’s MiEV technology ensures that all systems are operating as efficiently and economically as possibly. Mitsubishi estimates that the 100% electric i will cost the average driver $2.40 per 85 miles driven, while a hybrid vehicle rated at 50mpg costs about $6.80 to travel the same distance. Like it or hate it, those savings are hard to ignore.

Honda S2000 Concept Revived For Launch In 2013 test 2

According to Auto Express, sources in Japan claim that Honda intends to implement both car and motorcycle technologies towards creating a front-wheel drive, sports coupe as a possible successor for the long-departed S2000. This reborn coupe will be based on the current gasoline-electric CR-Z platform, but is expected to have a smaller body and shorter overhangs. Styling cues will derive from Honda’s OSM concept car (pictured above).

Most excitingly, the next generation Beat will incorporate some of Honda’s cutting edge technology. Engine specifics remain unclear, but either or both the 1.3L and 1.5L advanced VTECs are likely candidates to be offered to an eager public.

Lotus Will Build Its Own Range of Engines

Lotus Esprit test 2

The tide of change continues to rise over in Hethel. Lotus revealed late last year that it planned to make a decision on whether to build its own engines for its upcoming sports car expansion. The automaker was supposed to come to the decision in the winter, but apparently it took a little longer to green-light an internal engine production program. What it took was the freeing up of some funds in order to allocate monies toward engine development.

Lotus found the funding it needed from the delay of the Elan 2 + 2, a decision that it announced recently. The automaker decided that the car was just a little too close to the Esprit and delayed its development for a few years.
