Subaru RWD, Frankfurt-Bound Sports Car Named 'BRZ'

Subaru RWD, Frankfurt-Bound Sports Car Named 'BRZ' test 2

So far, the sports-car partnership between Toyota has given us a whole lot of Toyota—two iterations of the FT-86 and a Scion-branded FR-S—and not a whole lot of Subaru. From Fuji Heavy Industries' car brand we've been left with the awkwardly named, 100-percent concept Boxer Sports Car Architecture Concept a.k.a. Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept.

Well, the production Subaru is anticipated at this December's Tokyo Motor Show, so Subie doesn't have much time to go from transparent concept to full-fledged, production-ready car. The automaker will release the next concept version of the car at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. And, we're happy to report, the model will finally have a simple name that doesn't give us cramped fingers.

Cadillac Unveils Ciel Convertible Concept

Cadillac Unveils Ciel Convertible Concept test 2

Last Wednesday, when Cadillac announced that it was producing the Converj plug-in concept as the ELR, it mentioned that it would launch a concept the following day at the Concours d'Elegance Pebble Beach. If you read it quickly, it appeared the concept was going to be the next version of the ELR, since the entire press release save for the last paragraph was about the ELR. But if you read a little closer, Cadillac simply said: "Cadillac will reveal another new concept car on Thursday, Aug. 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance."

The new concept isn't the next iteration of its plug-in, but a classicly styled convertible that it calls the Ciel.

Kia Launches RWD Sports Car Concept

Kia Launches RWD Sports Car Concept test 1-1

Well, as promised, Kia has announced its own sporty sedan concept. Unfortunately, the car looks like a cheap Korean-made knockoff of the million-dollar Aston Martin One-77. Not exactly the best way to announce that you've arrived in the serious performance car market. The four-door rear-wheeler will make its debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. Kia provided a sneak peak last week.

Despite the fact that its pointed headlamps and vertical air intakes look ripped off and dumbed down from the One-77, some of the car isn't a bad effort. The car packs four seats and four doors into a flowing, extended-coupe profile. We're not too sure we can take the hood-mounted rear-views seriously on a Kia, however. And from what we can see of it, that flat-faced rear-end yells misfortune.

Worlds Collide: Audi Planning A Pickup Truck?

Worlds Collide: Audi Planning A Pickup Truck? test 1-1

Pickup trucks. Luxury cars. These are two terms that don't tend to intertwine, save perhaps for auto dealership inventory sheets. There's really nothing luxurious about hard-driving, utilitarian haulers designed to truck gear, dirt and manure around the work site. Nor should there be.

But, lately, the terms have been appearing together every so often. BMW released its own bedded four-wheeler, though it revealed that it was meant only as an April Fool's prank. This week brings some photographic confirmation of another German luxo-ute: It's an Audi-branded pickup and it may be for real.

Tesla Model X To Launch In December

Tesla Model X To Launch In December test 2

Out with the old, in with the new... This year, Tesla will officially end production of its Roadster, a car that has invigorated the world of all-electric vehicles. According to a quarterly earnings call with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Tesla will also launch a concept version of its next vehicle—the Model X crossover—before the end of 2011.

VW Execs Want Production Bulli

VW Execs Want Production Bulli test 2

There are vehicles that automakers make because they're highly profitable bread-and-butter (think Hyundai Accords and Toyota Corollas). There are vehicles that automakers make to develop a little buzz around their brand and draw people into showrooms, even if the car in question isn't a big seller (think flashy, low-volume halo cars). And there are cars that companies make because they're so ingrained in the company's history and heritage that it would be a shame not to.

The Volkswagen Type 2, aka Minibus or Microbus, is a little bit of all three. Even those completely unfamiliar with Volkswagen's history and models could probably recall the Microbus. It's the type of distinctive vehicle that makes you stop and think "Nice. I want it." And if you happen to be stopped in front of a VW dealer, you might just be inclined to stroll in for more information. The Type 2's history at VW gives it a story rivaled only by that of VW's other icon: the Beetle (aka Type 1). In its heyday back in the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Type 2 was definitely more than just a funky, unique show piece; it was a popular market success.

So, it should be no surprise that in the wake of the 2011 Bulli concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen executives are excited about the potential return of the Bus.

Cadillac Bringing Converj Hybrid To Market As ELR

Cadillac Bringing Converj Hybrid To Market As ELR test 2

Well, that didn't take long. After news that Cadillac has made the decision to make a Volt-based hybrid production Converj broke last week, Cadillac officially confirmed with a press release. Though there are few details at the moment, as production has just gotten started, Cadillac confirmed that the car will take on the 3-letter structure of its other vehicles, being called the 'ELR' in production.

The name 'ELR' is inspired by the electric propulsion system of the car. The ELR will use an electric motor for primary motivation and a four-cylinder engine as a generator to greatly extend range. The car will store electricity in a T-shaped lithium-ion battery. Though Cadillac doesn't say it outright, the powertrain will likely be an updated version of the Chevy Volt's powertrain.

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive: Great For Stealing Jewelry

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive test 2

BMW has a new video featuring its futuristic Vision ConnectedDrive concept hitting the roads. The video centers around a rather smug Romeo that uses his ConnectedDrive to help him steal a little something for his lass in the waiting. Frankly, it's a stupid video. But it's an awesome car, so, therefore, worth a watch.

BMW launched its Vision ConnectedDrive concept back at the Geneva Motor Show. Unlike most concept cars that are pretty hardware-focused, BMW was focused more on the road and environment surrounding the car. The ConnectedDrive system features all types of technologies designed to make driving easier, safer, smarter and more enjoyable.

What A Concept! RM To Offer Five American Prototypes In Monterey

Shelby GR-1 test 2

Lots of show cars have been built between 1932 and 2005, but only a fraction of them were constructed by American car companies themselves as showcases of their design and engineering prowess.

It’s no wonder that they are highly sought-after today—especially considering the fact that most were destroyed once they outlived their “usefulness”—and have price tags that reflect their rarity.

Speaking of rarity, to have five of them come up for sale at once—especially in one place—is nearly unheard of, but that’s what RM Auctions is offering August 19th and 20th at its Monterey sale, held at the Portolo Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center.

Now let us go back... to the future!

Audi Shows Off Light, Green 'Urban Concept'

Audi Shows Off Light, Green 'Urban Concept' test 2

After an inadvertent reveal via spy shot, Audi has provided some official information and pictures of its Urban Concept. The car, which will make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next month, takes compact and lightweight to the next level.

This one is definitely more of a fully conceptual, tinkering-with-ideas-type concept than a preview of a future Audi car. Audi describes it:

"The Audi urban concept is not based on any previous model—its development is solely oriented on the strict principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction. The result is a concept car with no unnecessary weight, and one that concentrates on the pure essence of sporty motion."

Lamborghini Estoque To Spawn Four-Seat Convertible

Lamborghini Estoque To Spawn Four-Seat Convertible test 2

It seems a little early to start talking about Lamborghini sedan spin-offs. After all, official word is that a potential sedan model is still in hot competition with an SUV for the coveted third spot in Lambo's line. So keep in mind this is a rumor built on top of a rumor.

According to Top Speed, Lamborghini is already planning a convertible version of its sedan. The convertible would hit the market about two years after the hard-topped model.
