Vygor Introduces Opera Sports Car test 2

Following up on a teaser a couple weeks ago, Italian newcomer Vygor has introduced its Opera sports car. Like traditional opera, the sports car is an acquired taste (to put it optimistically), and not something most people will want to spend any time sitting in.

How Low Will It Go? Kia GT To Lose V-6?

How Low Will It Go? Kia GT To Lose V-6? test 2

Before the Kia GT concept launched, rumors indicated Kia had a rear-wheel V-8-powered sports car to show at Frankfurt. When the concept made its official debut, it had a 3.3-liter turbo V-6 instead of a V-8. No big deal, since a 390-hp Kia sports coupe is still an interesting concept.

Rumor has it, the V-6 may give way to a four-cylinder in production, however.

Old Concept Turns One-Off Supercar

Old Concept Turns One-Off Supercar test 2

On any given year, there are a number of awesome concept car debuts. Many of these cars are the most interesting, exciting stars of major auto shows. Sometimes, they go on to limited-run or full-blown production. Many times they never make it past the concept stage and are retired to the annals of automotive history.

The past few years, we've had a pretty good run of concept cars being green-lighted. Intriguing, cutting edge concepts like the Jaguar C-X75, Porsche 918 Spyder, and Lamborghini Sesto Elemento have all been approved for limited production, and other exciting concepts like the Lotus Esprit were designed to preview upcoming production models.

But we aren't always so lucky. Some sexy, high-performing concepts are left to be forgotten and mentioned only in passing every year or two in auto news stories.

One artist decided that one concept deserved to be more than just a forgotten relic of once edgy design and technology. Since Ford wouldn't build it, he's doing it himself.

Lamborghini Sedan/SUV Concept At Geneva Motor Show?

Lamborghini Sedan/SUV Concept At Geneva Motor Show? test 2

Last we checked Lamborghini was pitting a potential SUV against a potential sedan in deciding which model would join the Aventador and Gallardo/Cabrera in its line-up. There's no official word as to which direction Lamborghini will go, but we'll know for sure in a few months.

According to Motor Authority, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann recently said that Lamborghini will announce its decision on a third model early next year. To further tickle our anxiety, Winkelmann said that when Lambo decides, it will have a concept to show. Given the time frame, we take that to mean a concept sedan or SUV at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Sant'Agata Bolognese needs a more practical model with broader appeal to boost profitability. Small-volume supercars are just not the ticket to a healthy bottom line.

BMW: Raising The Bar - By Three test 2

Be prepared for a lot of changes in the car market in the next year or so. The luxury car segment will be all aflutter, and why is that you might be wondering? Well, BMW is making significant changes to the gold standard of the industry—the venerable 3-series. You can bet the only ones keeping a closer eye than us on just what those changes are going to look like are Lexus, Infiniti, Mercedes, and Audi.

Nissan Juke R: GT-R-Inspired Small Crossover

Nissan Juke R: GT-R-Inspired Small Crossover test 2

The worst news we've heard today: Nissan built a hardcore, sport version of the awkward Juke crossover. The best news we've heard today: "the car is not for production." The Juke R is merely a concept that Nissan designed to test the public reaction to a sported-out Juke.

While the sporty body kit and rear spoiler make the Juke look way more odd (something we didn't necessarily believe was possible), the one thing we can't argue with is the massive power upgrade. The Juke R trades its 188-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder for a 530-hp twin-turbo V-6 popped out from under the hood of the GT-R. I'm not sure if a crossover ever really needed Godzilla power, but it sure is a beefy upgrade.

The Chevrolet Mako Shark II

The Chevrolet Mako Shark II test 2

In the 1960s, the neatest car around was the Mako Shark II. The Mako Shark II, which debuted in April 1965, was a Chevrolet Concept car which was destined to become the latest model Corvette—which it finally did, in 1968.

Subaru Marks Outback Sport Replacement For 2013

2013 Subaru XV test 2

When Subaru scrapped the 2012 model of the company’s Impreza Outback Sport, some Subaru lovers feared the Outback Sport version might disappear altogether. However, company representatives at the recent Frankfurt show have dispelled our greatest fears – showcasing the potential Outback Sport replacement, aka the XV. As of yesterday, Edmunds reports that Subaru has officially confirmed the XV will be headed our way sometime during 2012, as a 2013 model.

The XV looks to be a direct replacement for the outgoing Impreza Outback Sport, which met a recent demise in 2012. Yet, Subaru has not finalized the new vehicle’s name, using XV as a concept moniker.

Fred Flintstone Would Be Proud: Pedal-Powered Hyundai Azera

Pedal-Powered Hyundai Azera test 2

Now that Hyundai has pulled a successful 180 on its image, it can barely build its cars fast enough. When you experience great success, you have a little extra time and money to invest in the finer things in life (though Hyundai might want to think about beefing up its production capacity instead). And sometimes the finer things in life are quirky, fun projects.

Hyundai's China team recently hit the street with a life-sized Hyundai Azera that traded an engine for a pedal-powered drivetrain. Talk all you want about the 40 mpg, this baby is as clean as it gets.

1994 Ford Boss Concept Mustang

1994 Ford Boss Concept Mustang test 2

This 1994 Mustang is not one you can buy—in fact, it is a concept car. It was built by SVE (Special Vehicle Engineering—Ford Motor Co.) as the right car to challenge a 572 c.i. Chevrolet ZL-1 Camaro. Which car is the fastest? The drag race took place in January, 2000—but without definitive results. Oh well, it still makes for interesting reading!

US To Get Lotus Ethos City Car By 2013

US To Get Lotus Ethos City Car By 2013 test 2

At least year's Paris Motor Show, Lotus came out, guns blazing, with a slew of sports car concepts designed to reinvent the brand. When the smoke from those booming gunshots finally cleared, there was one more car to be seen: the City Car concept, a tiny subcompact based on the Emas concept from parent company Proton.

Lotus is working on production of many of those concepts, including the City Car, which will be called the Ethos. Despite dour sales for competitors like the smart fortwo, Lotus will bring the Ethos to the US market in a couple years.
