Mini 'Clubvan' Revealed, Dog Owners Rejoice

On: Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 3:30PM | By: Chris Salamone

Mini Clubvan Concept test 2

Rumors have been cycling for a while now, but these are the first official images of the Mini Clubvan concept which is set to debut at Geneva’s Auto Show in March. While panel vans continue to be popular in Europe, the stateside trend has remained somewhat lukewarm since Chevrolet introduced the HHR Panel and Ford unveiled the Ford Transit Connect. But perhaps Mini’s Clubvan concept will be fun or functional enough to convince US buyers to become panel van friendly. Perhaps the Clubvan will entice buyers not previously interested in the Mini brand or panel vans in general.

Enter the 39% of United States households which own at least one dog.

To be fair, we aren’t sure the Clubvan will ever reach US soil or even final production elsewhere. But if the vehicle ever enters the land of the free, you can bet your lucky socks that pet owners will be the primary buying demographic.

Carrozzeria Touring Teases New Concept

Carrozzeria Touring Teases New Concept test 2

It looks like the Geneva Motor Show will be stocked to the rafters with new concepts from the big Italian firms. We've already heard about the Cambiano from Pininfarina and the Nuccio from Bertone. Now we have a teaser for the Disco Volante 2012 from Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera.

That isn't a boat you're looking out. Just underneath that foggy blur is a set of four wheels (at least we assume so). The curvy concept is designed to offer a futuristic and aerodynamic styling. Word is, its drag coefficient has been kept down to .25 thanks to its rounded edges. It also features aluminum and carbon fiber body work.

Kia Introduces Track'ster Concept

Kia Track'ster Concept test 2

After a short teaser campaign, Kia unveiled its new Track'ster concept at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show last week. The concept is a sporty version of the Soul.

The Chicago Auto Show typically isn't quite as big for new debuts and concepts as Detroit or New York, but it sounds like the Track'ster added some excitement. Kia describes the scene, "Amid the driving rhythm of heavy-metal music, smoke and blinding lights, Kia Motors America (KMA) took the wraps off a performance-oriented three-door Soul coupe concept that hints at what could possibly be the future of Kia's wildly successful Soul."

Bertone Teases New Geneva Concept

Bertone Teases New Geneva Concept test 2

It looks like this year's Geneva Motor Show will bring us concepts from two of Italy's most prominent design houses. We've already seen some teasing for the Pininfarina Cambiano, and now Stile Bertone has teased a concept of its own. It's named Nuccio after Nuccio Bertone.

Like the Cambiano, the Nuccio is designed as an anniversary celebration. It recognizes Bertone's 100 years of existence and is named after Nuccio Bertone, son of the company's founder and an influential past leader that split the company into Stile Bertone (for design) and Carrozzeria Bertone (for manufacturing). Nuccio passed away in 1997 and his widow Lilli Bertone heads the company today.

The Nuccio should prove to be an exciting debut. The car is a tribute to the firm's heritage and is a modern reinterpretation of its wedge-shaped styling. This wedge shape was exemplified by one of Bertone's most famous concepts - the recently sold Lancia Stratos HF Zero concept from the 1970 Turin Motor Show. Bertone has named that car among its "10 masterpieces."

XSeed Hybrid Buggy Concept

XSeed Hybrid Buggy Concept test 2

The Peugeot EX-1 just got a little competition. The EX-1 was one of the few vehicles that we could think of that compares to the new XSeed concept, a small hybrid speedster that's part go-cart or buggy and part car.

The Xseed is the work of designer Marcus Beltrao, according to Ubergizmo. It's just a design, so take the actual design features and hard figures with a grain of salt.

Honda Releases New Video On History Of The NSX test 2

Honda sure is dedicated to its new NSX concept. Last Sunday, the automaker released its first ever Acura Super Bowl commercial for a concept that won't even hit the market for three years. Now it's put together an 8-minute video showcasing the model's past and present.

If you're an NSX fan, this is your lucky day. Honda's video is full of everything that you just have to love: lots of track footage of the original NSX, grinding engine notes, NSX racers, shots of the V-TEC engine, slow motion, commercial-like footage, driving footage of the new NSX concept, a closer look at the new NSX's powertrain, and more.

Pininfarina Releases Teaser Video Of Cambiano Concept test 2

Pininfarina has been teasing the Cambiano concept for the past several weeks. The concept will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and in anticipation of that debut, Pininfarina has provided the best look yet this week in a new teaser video.

The new video still doesn't reveal the entire Cambiano but does take us from one close up to the next, showing more clearly that the Cambiano is destined to be one of the sexier concepts of the Geneva Motor Show.

VW Reveals Next-Gen Platform, Bulli Cometh?

MQB Platform test 2

Volkswagen has just unveiled perhaps the most significant development of 2012: an all-new platform meant to underpin everything from the Up! to the A3 and next European Passat. As the photos show, the MQB platform – short for Modularer Querbaukasten or modular transverse-engine – has an adjustable wheelbase to fit a variety of different vehicle sizes, engines, and transmissions. And best of all, the introduction of a production ready MQB signals one really enticing possibility…

Last year’s Geneva Auto Show included an MQB concept vehicle which effectively stole the show: the Bulli microvan. Since the MQB’s wheelbase can range between 98.2, 101.8, and 103.5 inches, this single platform is capable of underpinning a wide array of glorious new models – including the Up!, Polo, future Audi TT and A1. And you guessed it, the success of Volkswagen’s new MQB platform might herald the much-anticipated second coming of the company’s ultimate camper van.

Volvo Demonstrates Autonomous Road Train Concept

On: Wed, Feb 1, 2012 at 4:25PM | By: Chris Weiss

Volvo Road Train Concept test 2

Players from all over the automotive and technology industries are working on developing autonomous driving systems. Last week, Volvo demonstrated its own take on autonomous driving with its first test of the European Union-supported Safe Road Trains for the Environment program.

The 'road train' tested by Volvo consists of a lead truck and a series of three self-driven cars following it. The vehicles travel at speeds of up to 56 mph with no more than 6 meters (about 20 feet) between them.

Similar to actual trains, road trains would allow vehicle 'drivers' to catch up on work, read the newspaper, eat breakfast, etc. Drivers would turn into passengers and would no longer be required to keep their eyes on the road or operate the vehicle. The system would essentially provide a public transportation-like commute on roadways.

Star Power: Acura Pairs Jerry Seinfeld And New NSX In Super Bowl Ad test 2

In the world of cars, there are few bigger celebrities at this moment than the all-new Acura NSX, a car that's been in the making for years. In the world of comedy, there are few bigger celebrities than Jerry Seinfeld, whose Seinfeld television show is largely considered one of the best shows of all time. So why not combine the two into a big Super Bowl ad?

The Acura NSX spot is one of the latest in a growing field of car Super Bowl commercials previewed via YouTube. The commercial depicts Seinfeld - a known car buff - at an Acura dealer trying to buy the first NSX. Unfortunately, he can only get the number 2 spot because "that guy" is already the first buyer.

Car Tech: Touchscreen Fabric Coming To Car Interiors Of The Future

Car Tech: Touchscreen Fabric Coming To Car Interiors Of The Future test 2

If researchers at Montreal's Polytechnic School and BMW have their way, future cars may incorporate touch-sensitive fabrics that allow drivers to control functions by simply tapping or rubbing the interior fabric. BMW has shown some interest in the experimental technology.

According to New Scientist, researchers at the Institute have developed a soft fiber that hosts electrical properties from the copper wire and conductive and insulative polymers weaved in. The idea is that the fiber would be woven into fabric and could create different electrical signals depending on where it's touched.

It still sounds quite rudimentary and experimental, but if it materializes, people could tap or swipe their fingers and hands across the material to perform different electrically based functions. In a car, this could mean tapping your finger against the door fabric to change the level of air conditioning or perhaps gliding your hand backwards on the seat to move it back.
