Volkswagen Unveils CC 'R-Line'

On: Tue, May 29, 2012 at 2:04PM | By: Chris Salamone

Volkswagen CC R-Line test 2

On Sunday, Volkswagen of America revealed a new sportiest version of the CC four-door coupe to debut physically at the Auto Mobil International car show in Leipzig on June 1st, the CC R-Line. In addition to all those perky German technologies associated with the CC Sport Plus, the R-Line will be mated to an optional six-speed manual transmission, beefier lower air intake, upgraded lights, and aggressive aesthetics.

If there’s one thing we’ve always appreciated about the Volkswagen CC, it’s the vehicle’s sophisticated style – often fitting in with equally distinctive, but significantly more expensive makes. The R-Line model appears to take style to a whole new level, aimed to find the perfect nexus of sport and luxury.

Toyota Supra Successor To Get 400-HP Hybrid Powertrain

Toyota Supra Successor To Get 400-HP Hybrid Powertrain test 2

The rumored Toyota Supra successor may be taking a move upmarket. Instead of battling mid-level sports cars like the Nissan 370Z, it may be battling flagships like the Honda NSX. A new report is the second we've read that gifts the Supra revival a 400-hp hybrid powertrain that could help it to be Toyota's halo.

We first read about a possible 400-hp hybrid drive unit late last year in Motor Trend. The latest issue of the magazine gives a few more details on the model, which isn't expected to bring back the Supra name.

Will The Car Of The Future Hover?

Will The Car Of The Future Hover? test 2

Though its definition may be disguised to those that don't speak German, the Volkswagen is, quite literally, the 'people's car'. Last year, the German automaker put a whole new emphasis on this definition by launching the People's Car Project in China, a Web-based collaborative platform for new product and technology ideas. At the Beijing Motor Show this month, Volkswagen showed the first three concepts to come out of the project.

Volkswagen is quite happy with the success that the People's Car Project (we feel bad calling it "PCP") has had over its first 11 months. The website has attracted 33 million visitors and inspired about 119,000 unique ideas. It's been so successful, in fact, Volkswagen is extending its run indefinitely (it was originally planned for a single year).

Volkswagen Considering An Up! Crossover

Volkswagen Considering An Up! Crossover test 2

Based upon the strong reaction that its up! production models and concepts have inspired, Volkswagen appears ready to expand its green city car line. It's currently considering an up! crossover based upon the cross up! concept it showed in Frankfurt.

It's no surprise that Volkswagen is considering expanding the up! line. It has been showing up! concepts at nearly every major auto show of late - including a quartet at this year's Geneva Motor Show. Meanwhile, the up! production car, which launched in Europe recently, has won some major accolades, including World Car of the Year.

Bentley Thinks It Can Sell 3,000 SUVs A Year

Bentley Thinks It Can Sell 3,000 SUVs A Year test 2

After making its European and Asian debuts, things are looking good for the Bentley SUV. Bentley says that it's currently working on a business case for a production version of the EXP-9, and it believes it could sell about 3,000 models a year. It seems confident that official approval from Volkswagen is but a formality.

Last year, Bentley sold roughly 7,000 units from its Mulsanne-Continental line, so an extra 3,000 units from an SUV line wouldn't be anything to snort at. Bentley hasn't publicly okayed the model for production, but it sounds like the business case is making itself.

New Video: Bugatti Galibier 16C

Bugatti Galibier 16C test 2

If we had to place all our money on red, we'd say that Bugatti will eventually green light the 16C Galibier for production. The car may be the most ridiculous, over-the-top creation since the personal jetpack, but Bugatti seems to be doing too much with it to just let it wither on the vine. They've tinkered the car to Wolfgang Durheimer's perfecting demands and have let rumors run rampant, unrequited by any denial. Now, about 2.5 years after the concept was first revealed, Bugatti has released a random promo. There's just no way they let this hyper-sedan disappear without a production run.

With the Veyron nearing mandatory retirement, Bugatti must find something to fill its one-car lineup if it intends to continue having a presence in the auto market. And the only thing that we've really seen that could do that is the 16C Galibier. We're guessing that VW is just waiting for the right economic conditions to announce a $2 million ultra-premium sedan that puts basically every luxury and performance sedan in the world to shame.

Bertone Nuccio Concept Could Sell For $2.5 Million

Bertone Nuccio Concept test 2

Exotic cars really aren't all that exotic any more. Every NFL quarterback, sports agent, stock broker and rapper has one, possibly a whole garage-full. If you want to go really exotic, you have to be savvy enough to get your hands on the wild, one-off automotive creations known as concept cars. As the Bertone Nuccio demonstrates, you don't even have to have an iota of taste to drop millions on one of those.

The Bertone Nuccio debuted at last month's Geneva Motor Show. It was designed to be an homage to the wedge-shaped styling exemplified by the1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero. It failed pretty hard, as far as we're concerned, but that won't necessarily stop it from fetching more than its elder.

Lamborghini Still Considering Estoque Sedan

On: Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 5:12PM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Estoque Sedan test 2

Last summer, we learned that Lamborghini was pitting two prototypes against each other in a battle toward production. The news intimated that one victor would go to market and one loser would disappear like so many other concept cars and prototypes. With the launch of Urus concept this week, it appeared we had a winner in the crossover concept and a loser in the sedan concept. But there may be no losers in this battle.

Lamborghini appears committed to building the Urus SUV, but it hasn't entirely abandoned a sedan based upon the Estoque concept shown in 2008.

The VW Bug Goes Topless And Electric

E-Bugster test 2

Volkswagen has shaved the top off the Beetle and filled it with an electric powertrain for the Beijing Motor Show. More than just a fun, fanciful concept, the E-Bugster previews an upcoming Beetle Cabriolet.

The E-Bugster, which was first displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in January, is one of those concepts that knock out two birds with a single stone. It simultaneously shows what the new Beetle could (will?) look like in convertible variety, and it shows how the model could be fitted with an emissions free powertrain. The two-seat concept uses a Blue e-Motion powertrain built upon a 28.3 kWh lithium-ion pack. That battery provides 111 miles of range (a sure little bump from the ~100 miles offered by every other mainstream EV) and has fast-charging for 35-minute battery fills.

Lambo Goes SUV With Urus Concept

On: Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 10:14AM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Urus Concept test 2

Well this is entirely anti-climactic. After years of speculation, rumor and sound bites about a third Lamborghini, it's finally here. The Urus crossover concept made its debut at the Beijing Motor Show, and we've found it difficult to make any opinion one way or the other.

We were originally pretty excited about the prospect of a Lamborghini SUV, thinking back to the glory days of the LM002, a hardcore, military-style off-roader. When word drifted to a diluted, car-based crossover, our excitement turned to dismay as quickly as our hearts sunk into our stomachs. And when we saw a purported leaked picture, our dismay thickened like incoming harbor fog.

The Cadillac Of Autonomous Vehicles

The Cadillac Of Autonomous Vehicles test 2

Everyone's slowly inching toward a reality of self-driving vehicles, and it appears the trail is going to be blazed by luxury automakers. After all, these automakers could actually expect to fetch the price premium that advanced, autonomous vehicular systems will undoubtedly command when they first hit market. Cadillac is the latest automaker to show off some autonomous wares.

As the name "Super Cruise" conveys, Cadillac's technology is basically an advanced cruise control system. In addition to accelerating and keeping speed up like other cruise control systems, Super Cruise also takes over steering, braking and lane centering functions, rendering the driver an emergency manual back-up.
