GM Recalls 9,000 Vans

On: Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at 5:20PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

GM Recalls 9,000 Vans test 2

GM has issued a recall of 9,389 Chevy Express and GMC Savanna vans. It seems that cars that were registered in most states in the north east and northern central parts of the United States have been found to be prone to having debris collect in the fuel filler pipe cover. Various forms of debris built up over the years can lead to corrosion of the pipe, and consequently fuel leaking out of the pipe. Obviously, leaking fuel while refueling can lead to hazards abound, not the least of which is a fire.

GM will replace the pipe free of charge, but has not established a timeline for the fix as of this writing. Read on for the full report, and to see if your state is one of the areas in question.

Toyota Recalls Over 700,000 Cars

Toyota Recalls Over 700,000 Cars test 2

Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the Toyota dealership, out comes another massive recall from the Japanese automaker. Although, it seems this one is a bit more proactive than reactive, so at least that's a big step in the right direction. But, there is no denying the enormity of this recall -- 778,000 vehicles in all.

The two models affected are the Lexus HS 250 Hybrid and the venerable Rav4. Affected cars were manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010, and all suffer from a rear suspension arm that are apparently extremely delicate and if tightened wrong, can cause excessive movement and potentially complete failure. Toyota has not specified how they intend to remedy the problem, but promises to begin contacting owners as soon as a proper fix has been figured out.

Ford Recalls Another 400,000 Escapes

Ford Recalls Another 400,000 Escapes test 2

Suffice to say that in the last month or two, Ford has not had the best press regarding its Escape SUV. There have been two other major recalls in recent memory, and now Ford has just issued another one -- bringing back 423,634 models built between October 22, 1999 and January 23, 2004.

This time around, it seems there was a clearance issue found under the hood that involves the throttle cable. This lack of clearance can potentially cause the throttle to get stuck in the open position, resulting in a potentially very dangerous situation that is not completely unlike the huge mess Toyota found themselves in a few years ago.

Having a throttle stuck wide-open has the potential to cause not just injuries, but fatalities on a massive level. Ford has said it will begin contacting owners this week, but owners may also contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 if they do not feel like waiting. Hopefully this will be the last we hear of the Escape in terms of recalls for a long while.

Ford Recalls 9,320 More Escapes

On: Tue, Jul 24, 2012 at 3:06PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2013 Ford Escape test 2

Ford is not doing well lately. In the last couple weeks they have issued one recall for over 8,000 Escapes, and then more recently, another recall for their bigger F650 and F750 work trucks. This week, it is another recall, for another 9,320 brand new 2013 Escapes.

This time, new Escapes equipped with the 1.6-liter four cylinder engine built between October 5, 2011 through July 11, 2012 may have been given a faulty fuel line that is prone to splitting, and consequently, leaking fuel.  As one can imagine, leaking gasoline is never a good thing -- especially in an engine compartment.

Owners are being instructed to completely stop driving their Escapes and Ford will arrange for a pick up and free fix of owners fuel lines. This is definitely not a recall to ignore, so if you or anyone you know has a new Escape, have them all Ford 1-866-436-7332 as soon as possible.

New Study Reveals How Sensor Safety Systems Stack Up

New Study Reveals How Sensor Safety Systems Stack Up test 2

As the automotive industry slowly drifts toward a future in which human driving will be obsolete, sensor-based safety systems are reaching more and more drivers. These systems use advanced hardware, including radar, lasers and motion sensors, to monitor and react to the road around you. Because these systems are often sold as options, consumers have the right to know: do they work and are they worth the investment? A new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute provides some insight.

Ford Recalls F650 & F750 Trucks

On: Wed, Jul 18, 2012 at 9:56AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Ford Recalls F650 & F750 Trucks test 2

Ford has issued a recall of 783 of its 2012 F650 and F750 models. Although that number may sound low, keep in mind that the F650 and F750 trucks are purpose built work trucks that are not built in the same quantities as say, the F150 or Explorer, so the amount proportionally is enough to cause concern.

It seems that at the factory, these trucks may not have gotten the correct bonding material between the truck and the windshield. This lack of bonding can cause some severe consequences, like the windshield falling off of the truck. Considering the work that these trucks are usually employed for, that seems to be an even higher concern than one would normally assign for this type of problem.

Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule a free fix of their windshield as soon as possible or wait to be contacted by Ford. Read on for the full report.

Ford Recalls 8,200 New Escapes

2013 Ford Escape test 2

Ford has just announced a recall of 8,266 Escape models for a very unusual reason. It seems the carpet in these cars may have been aligned wrong underneath the driver’s seat leading to the center console. This misalignment may reduce the distance between the floor and the pedals, which could cause the driver to catch the brake pedal while moving from the gas pedal.

This obviously could cause a host of problems for those on the road, most notably, a crash. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule a free fix of the carpet and console panel, or wait it out until Ford initiates their recall beginning July 23.

Volvo Recalls 1,400 New S80s

On: Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 1:47PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Volvo S80 test 2

Volvo has announced a recall of 1,469 S80 models made between 2011-2013. It seems that a factory error has caused a fault within the transmission of these cars. When coasting, the car is unable to downshift which could cause a multitude of problems from stalling to acceleration problems -- all of which could cause potentially dangerous road conditions for drivers and other motorists alike. Volvo has planned to begin its recall next week, but owners can call Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 to schedule a free fix.

France Makes Drivers Carry Breathalyzers

On: Tue, Jul 10, 2012 at 10:12AM | By: Chris Weiss

France Makes Drivers Carry Breathalyzers test 2

In an interesting move, France has passed a law that requires every vehicle in the country to carry its own breathalyzer. Not only will drivers suspected of drunk driving have to take the test, they'll have to supply it.

Outside of shifting some of the cost of breathalyzer equipment from state to citizen, the law doesn't really appear to do a whole lot. If it required a breathalyzer-based ignition system, it might actually do something to cut down on drunk driving. But since it basically just means throwing a breathalyzer in the glove compartment, it really doesn't seem to have much juice.

Chevy Recalls 400,000 Cruze Models

On: Mon, Jul 2, 2012 at 10:42AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Chevy Cruze test 2

Chevy has released a recall of 413,148 Cruze models made from October 2, 2009 through May 31, 2012 billed as 2011 and 2012 models. It seems that any oil that may spill or drip as a result of an changing an oil filter or adding oil to the car can gather in the engine shield at the base of the motor. Unfortunately, that is also in very close proximity to very hot engine parts (exhaust and catalytic converters), which may cause all of that collected oil to catch fire, which would ruin most any driver's day.

Thankfully, owners can contact Chevy for a free fix of the shield at 1-866-694-6546 or simply wait until Chevy begins contacting owners later this month.

BMW Recalls 2,642 New X5 And X6 Models

BMW Recalls 2,642 New X5 And X6 Models test 2

Well, you finally made it! You got that brand new BMW you've always wanted! Congratulations! However, before you start showing off that new BMW SUV, you may want to take a ride back to the dealership.  That is, if you are one of the 2,642 unlucky folks who picked up a 2012 X5/X6 or a 2013 X6 equipped with a diesel engine you may have already noticed or smelled some leaking power steering fluid.

Unfortunately, because of a mistake made during production, the steering gear surface was machined improperly, causing the leak. The bigger issue is that if that fluid comes in contact exhaust manifolds it could catch fire -- ruining that brand new Bimmer pretty quickly.

Read on for the full report, and how to contact BMW to schedule your free fix.
