Dodge Recalls 44,000 Pickup Trucks

On: Thu, Oct 11, 2012 at 12:51PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Dodge Ram test 2

Chrysler has announced a recall of 44,300 of its Dakota and Ram trucks. The trucks in question have build dates between July 1, 2009 - November 30, 2009. It seems that the pinion nut may not have been manufactured with the proper amount of adhesive, and thus may be prone to coming loose causing the axle to lock up. If the axle locks up unexpectedly, it can cause the driver to lose control and crash.

Chrysler has said it will fix the problem free of charge by installing a pinion nut retainer on all potentially affected trucks. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 to schedule their free fix. Read on for the full report.

Cadillac's Driver Assist Package Offers Virtual Safety

Cadillac's Driver Assist Package Offers Virtual Safety test 2

The key role of a bumper is to absorb shock from an accident and reduce damage to the body of the car. Cadillac is saying that isn’t good enough and they want to prevent accidents from happening at all. Cadillac’s Front and Rear Automatic Braking system, which acts as a “virtual bumper,” may prevent you from backing into that mailbox or hitting a car when attempting to parallel park.

As part of an optional Driver Assist Package for the ATS, XTS and SRX sedans and crossovers, Cadillac’s new virtual bumper technology relies on a series of sensors. Radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors detect a possible upcoming crash. If the system detects an oncoming frontal collision, an automatic maximum braking effort is applied with or without your participation. So technically, you could avoid a low-speed accident while asleep, although it’s not recommended you try that.

GM Recalls 426,000 Malibus, G6 And Auras

On: Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 5:12PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Chevy Malibu test 2

GM has recalled 426,240 vehicles that include 2008-2010 Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 as well as 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models. It seems that the transmission shift cable end may break, which of course is not a good thing. A broken cable can result in a misalignment of the shift lever and the real position of the transmission gear. So, although the driver may believe the car is in Park, the car may actually be in Reverse or Neutral -- even if the key has been removed. This defect could result in inadvertently dangerous situations for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

GM will provide a free fix for all cars involved with the recall. Owners can reach GM at 1-800-521-7300 with questions or to schedule their appointment.  Read on for the full report.

Ford Recalls 5,400 Edge Models

On: Thu, Sep 20, 2012 at 2:59PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

2012 Ford Edge test 2

Ford has had a rough go as of late, and this newest addition of their recall list will not help to make things any better. 5,499 examples of 2012 Edge models manufactured between September 02, 2010 - October 31, 2011 are being called back to the home office because a pulse damper on the fuel line apparently has a propensity to crack under pressure. Obviously if a fuel line cracks, it can (and more than likely will) leak fuel which can lead to a fire.

Ford will begin notifying owners this week, and will repair the defective fuel line free of charge. Owners can call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 with questions or to schedule a repair. Read on for the full report.

Bonhams Sells "V12 NUT" UK License Plate For Over $4k. What A Bargain!

Like cricket (the game) and Marmite (whatever the hell that is) there are just things they do in the UK that I can’t get a handle on. I always thought it was a production assistant goofing around with the more apt license plates you see on Top Gear’s test cars but no: people actually have to pay for those. A LOT. Like the four grand for “V12 NUT” Bonhams got recently.

And before you think this is an isolated incident—and/or skip to the fun "Top Five" lists I’ve painstakingly copied from another site—I provide you with a roster of offerings to be, um… offered at Barons’ “Annual British Heritage Auction & Other Classics” sale somewhere on the island today (September 17) (with plates offered in quotes and auction estimate averages in greenbacks):

[And I hate math more than you can imagine so appreciate what I did here, dang it!]

They are, as follows: “DB09 AML” [$8,315]; “9 BEN” [$34,880]; “Y12 FER” [$1,704]; “D8 GTS” [$3,448]; “W18 OND” [$2,434]; “EA51 CAR” [$1,866]; “V8 REG” [$3,488]. What, you don’t see the perfectly good reason why “9 BEN” should cost more than a new Camaro? Oh, silly American. Because, as the description reads [EXACTLY], “Pre 63 Bentley? Any The ultimate Bentley registration” of course!

Lamborghini Recalls 1,400 Gallardos

Lamborghini Recalls 1,400 Gallardos test 2

It was only a matter of time. The Gallardo had become Lamborghini's unquestioned sales king, and over the course of its eight model year run (and counting). Make enough of something, and eventually something will break. Well, in the case of this mass-produced exotic, it seems the power steering fluid from certain hoses, or even the pump itself might leak. The leak could ignite off of high temperature engine parts and cause a very costly fire to a very pretty car.

Thankfully Lamborghini has a fix for the leaking problem, and will provide it free of charge to owners  Lambo has said it will begin to notify owner this week to schedule a free fix. Owners can contact the company at 1-703-364-7042 with questions and/or to make an appointment to get this back in shape.

Ford Recalls 6,100 MORE New Escapes

Ford Recalls 6,100 MORE New Escapes test 2

At first glance of this newest recall from Ford, at least one writer yelled out loud, "Another one?!" Yup, the Blue Oval is hauling back another 6,146 new Escapes built between October 5, 2011 through August 31, 2012 which were all designated as 2013 models. It seems on 1.6-liter engine models the freeze plug may well just fall out for no reason and then allow coolant to leak out onto hot engine parts and potentially catch fire. Ford will begin contacting owners next week and plans to fix the plug and add additional safety features to ensure it will be secured in place. The fix will be free of charge.

On a side note, Ford has had several Escape recalls in very recent weeks and if this keeps up, their reputation may very well be in jeopardy. As it stands now, the Escape will be avoided as a future car of choice by at least one writer.

Finally! An Auto Auction Lot That Comes With A Lifetime Mating-Prevention Guarantee!

Have a problem with getting too many women? I, being such a person, know what it’s like; they follow you everywhere, looking for any excuse to hop in your car and go…wherever.

This is why I’ve been considering replacing my eight-passenger 1989 Olds Custom Cruiser. If only I could find something that would not only seat one (and some groceries) and—most importantly—would instantly kill the mating instinct of the human female on sight.

As it turns out my ideal lust-killer’s been around since the 1980s: the Litestar Pulse. And if only I’d been at Auctions America’s Auburn Indiana sale last weekend—and been suffering from a tragic-yet-comical brain injury—I could’ve been the sad… I mean LUCKY guy who traded $22,000 actual American dollars for Lot 4052, a “1990 Reconstructed Pulse Litestar.”

Way to go, dude! No more girl-sourced cooties for you!

Nissan Recalls 7,800 JX35 Models

On: Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 11:33AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Nissan Recalls 7,800 JX35 Models test 2

Nissan is bringing back 7,842 of its JX35 crossover models to the factory. It seems that the models built between February 15 and June 22 of 2012 are at risk for a manufacturing mistake involving the gas tank. These cars had a fuel line improperly placed inside the gas tank, which can cause the float inside the tank to get hung up and not drop properly in relation to actual fuel levels. This can cause the gas gauge to read improperly, and display a higher level than what actually exists. Obviously, this can cause potentially significant issues for drivers, including the car stalling, running out of gas without proper warning, and potential damage to the fuel pump.

Nissan has said it will begin notifying owners as of the first week of September to schedule a free inspection and (if necessary) replacement of the faulty parts. Owners can call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 with any questions.

GM Recalls 249,000 SUVs

On: Tue, Aug 21, 2012 at 11:02AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Chevrolet Trailblazer test 2

Hot off the heels of a 9,000 unit van recall, General Motors has issued another recall for nearly a quarter of a million vehicles. Five GM-related SUV models are included in this new recall: the Buick Rainier, Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X. Once again, it seems that northeastern/north central states (states that experience four full seasons) are proving to be a trouble area for some GM vehicles.

According to the report, fluid (read:  rain and/or melted snow) can get inside the driver's door module and short out the power lock and window switches, which could cause the components to malfunction, melt, and or catch fire. GM has not established a plan as of this writing, but owners may contact dealers to find out more information.

Read on for the full report and contact information for individual company contact numbers.

GM Recalls 9,000 Vans

On: Mon, Aug 20, 2012 at 5:20PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

GM Recalls 9,000 Vans test 2

GM has issued a recall of 9,389 Chevy Express and GMC Savanna vans. It seems that cars that were registered in most states in the north east and northern central parts of the United States have been found to be prone to having debris collect in the fuel filler pipe cover. Various forms of debris built up over the years can lead to corrosion of the pipe, and consequently fuel leaking out of the pipe. Obviously, leaking fuel while refueling can lead to hazards abound, not the least of which is a fire.

GM will replace the pipe free of charge, but has not established a timeline for the fix as of this writing. Read on for the full report, and to see if your state is one of the areas in question.
