GM Adds More Recalls test 1-1

General Motors has released a bevy of new recalls which brings their total (for those keeping track) to 29 since the first of this year. That adds up to 13.6 million vehicles in the US which have needed some sort of repair due to factory defects. Some of those cars are counted more than once since several of the recalls covered more than one potential problem. I don't think that makes the figures any better.

Juke's Timing Chain has Problems test 1-1

Nissan is issuing a voluntary recall for all 2011-2013 Juke crossovers due to an issue with the timing chain. The chain can deteriorate or distort over time and can fail due to this defect. The driver may or may not get a warning light to alert him to the problem. If a light does come on, the chain is likely to fail if not repaired.

Half-Empty or Half-Full?: It Isn't Just An Attitude Anymore

Half-Empty or Half-Full?: It Isn't Just An Attitude Anymore test 1-1

When I was young I bought used cars, generally from private individuals, out of necessity due to low funding for the project. It was always a risky business even with help from my father, who knew more about cars than I did. I knew there was bound to be something wrong with the car that the owner “forgot” to tell me. One vehicle had a faulty gas gauge and I ended up on the side of the road on the way home from the purchase. The gauge said I had half a tank.

Congress Asked to Octuple Fine for Late Recalls test 1-1

There is new legislation afoot which has been put forth by Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. He is asking Congress to raise the maximum civil fine for violating United States auto safety laws to $300 million. That’s an 800% increase; Foxx hopes this would be a deterrent to future problems like the recent GM recall debacle.

The increase is part of a $302 billion four-year package aimed at replacing the depleted funds in the federal Highway Trust Fund, which provides money for things like bridge repairs, underground storage tanks, and mass transit (the mass transit division is actually in surplus at this time). The fund has seen a shortfall in revenue through gasoline taxes because of drivers are using less fuel.

Minor Recall Avoids a Major Problem test 1-1

It appears Chrysler is taking no chances when it comes to avoiding GM’s issue with waiting too long to recall problem vehicles. The automaker has announced a recall on just 159 trucks with a potential transmission fault.

Uh-O-ring, VW's Voluntary Recall

Uh-O-ring, VW's Voluntary Recall test 1-1

My boyfriend’s mode of transportation in high school was a late 60s Volkswagen Beetle. If you moved the floor mats in the back you could see the road go by. It got great gas mileage but it ran only about half the time and needed constant mechanical upkeep. My boyfriend liked to work on it, but it was frustrating not to have the use of it when we needed it. One of our friends skirted this common problem by purchasing an extra engine. He had one in the frame running the car and one in the garage being repaired at all times. But those were simpler times and cars had simpler engines.

Recall Domino Effect test 1-1

Thanks to General Motors and Toyota, recalls are standard fare in the world of automotive news. The effects of the delay in reporting potential life-threatening flaws in their products is having a domino effect in the industry.
