BMW Recalls 30,000 X5 Models

On: Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at 1:51PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

BMW Recalls 30,000 X5 Models test 2

BMW has announced it will bring back 30,265 X5 models due to a potentially defective brake vacuum pump. Eight-cylinder X5 models built between September 12, 2006 and March 18, 2010 may have a pump that could leak a "small amount" of lubricating oil into the hose, which could lead to a failure in the power brake booster. If the brake booster fails, it could lead to a crash caused by the driver not reacting properly to the failure, or simply due to the increased stopping distance the SUV must travel with no help from the booster.

BMW has said they will fix the vacuum line free of charge, and will begin contacting owners this month. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 with questions or to set up their appointment. Read on for the full report.

Honda Recalls 748,000 Cars!

Honda Recalls 748,000 Cars! test 1-1

Honda has announced a massive recall of two of their most popular models -- the Odyssey minivan and the Pilot SUV. In what seems to be a fairly simple production mistake, at least one of the rivets that holds the airbag module to the airbag cover may be missing from the car. The missing rivet may negatively affect the deployment of the airbag in the case of a crash, and result in further injury or even death to the occupant under the wrong circumstances.

Honda has said it will begin to notify owners starting next month, and will bring in the cars in question to have them inspected and serviced for free if rivets are in fact, missing. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 with questions or to set up an appointment. Read on for the full report.

GM Recalls 54,000 Trucks!

GM Recalls 54,000 Trucks! test 2

In yet another recall, GM has decided to call back 12 different models from three different companies under its umbrella totaling a massive 54,686 cars in all. It was only a few weeks ago that GM issued a similar recall for several of its non-SUV models, and now the bigger trucks are suffering from the same issue. It seems that Chevy Avalanche, Express, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Savanna, Sierra, Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade models may have a faulty park lock cable or a defective steering column gear that could result in the vehicle shifting out of Park with little or no warning, even when the car is not running or the brake is not depressed.  This could result in a very bad day for the driver, passengers, surrounding pedestrians, or all of the above.

GM has said they will bring the defective models back and replace any defective parts for free. Owners will begin to begin to be notified this month. Read on for the full report.

Subaru Recalls 633,000 Cars!

On: Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 5:12PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Subaru Forester test 2

Subaru has issued a massive recall of 633,842 vehicles spanning six years and four of their well-known models. Certain Tribeca models from 2006 through 2012, as well Legacy and Outback from 2010 through 2012, and Forester models from 2009 through 2012 have all been recalled due to faulty puddle lights located under the doors of the vehicles. Subaru says that up to 53,999 of these vehicles could have been equipped with these lights, which are susceptible to a short circuit if they are exposed to certain road conditions (such as salt and water resulting from wintery conditions). A short circuit in these conditions could result in the plastic panels these lights are mounted in to melt or even catch fire.

Subaru said it will contact owners to begin bringing cars in next month for a free fix.  Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Read on for the full report.

Hyundai Veloster: 3 Doors, 2 Recalls

On: Wed, Jan 2, 2013 at 10:04AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Hyundai Veloster: 3 Doors, 2 Recalls test 2

Hyundai has issued two recalls this month that may make owners a little less confident driving around their rage-against-the-norm three door Velosters. The first applies to 13,500 Veloster models built between November 1, 2011 and April 17, 2012 that have the optional panoramic sunroof. It seems that the sunroof may have been weakened during its production and thus may actually break while the car is in use which would not make for a good day for any driver.

The second recall affects 4,490 models built between July 2, 2011 and February 12, 2012. It seems that on these models, the parking brake components are susceptible to road debris and moisture which could interfere with its effectiveness and inadvertently cause the brake not to function. Obviously a non-functioning parking brake could cause a host of issues for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Owners can contact Hyundai at 1-888-327-4236 to schedule a free fix beginning in January of the new year.

Ford Recalls Another 80,000 New Cars

Ford Recalls Another 80,000 New Cars test 1-1

From what it seems like, Ford has not put their best effort into the production of their entry-level SUV, the Escape -- ever.  Ford has issued a multitude of recalls for the Escape for just about every year the Blue Oval has produced them.  This most recent recall not only brings back 2013 model Ford Escapes built between October 5, 2011 - November 26, 2012 but also includes new Ford Fusion models built between February 3, 2012 and November 29, 2012.

Toyota Recalls 669,000 Prius Models

On: Fri, Nov 23, 2012 at 11:14AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Toyota Recalls 669,000 Prius Models test 2

Toyota has issued a recall of its famous hybrid, and quite the recall it is. 669,705 models in all, encompassing five model years of production (2004-2009). It seems that these Prius models may have a steering shaft assembly that has been built with metal splines that have not been made with the appropriate amount of hardness. Due to that apparent manufacturing defect, these splines have the potential to simply fail after an indeterminate amount of time. If they fail, it could cause the driver to lose control of the car's steering.

Toyota has said it will begin contacting owners next month and will replace the splines for free if they deem the parts to be defective. Owners can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 with any questions or to set up an appointment to have their Prius inspected.

Jeep Recalls 744,000 Grand Cherokee And Liberty Models

On: Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 2:14PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Jeep Grand Cherokee test 2

Jeep has announced that is has issued a recall for Grand Cherokee models built between February 13, 2001 through May 23, 2003 and Liberty models built between January 9, 2001 and March 28, 2003 totaling a whopping 744,822 vehicles in all. It seems a part of the air bag control module can go bad after some time and its failure may cause any one of the airbags (driver's, passenger's, or side curtain) as well as the seatbelt tensioners to deploy. Obviously, if an airbag deploys at a time when it is not needed, it could cause serious injury or even death due to a crash.

Chrysler (Jeep's parent company) has said it will fix the airbag module for free, and begin contacting owners early in 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 with any questions or to schedule their repair date.

Chevy To Repair Software Glitch On 4,000 Volt Models

Chevy To Repair Software Glitch On 4,000 Volt Models test 2

You know how software requires constant updating and can quickly render your computer a useless block of plastic? Well, with automobiles relying more and more on electronics, we may be in for a future where software does the same thing to our cars. GM is currently dealing with one such glitch on the Chevy Volt.

According to the Detroit News, GM has FedExed letters to some 4,000 2013 Volt owners about bringing their hybrids in for a free software update. A problem with the software threatens to shut the Volt engine down during driving, requiring owners to pull over, shut the car off, and restart the engine several moments later - obviously more than just a minor inconvenience while driving. According to the newspaper's information, the brakes and steering continue to work and the problem only affects drivers that make use of the Volt's delayed charging function.

Ford Recalls 154,000 New Fiestas

On: Thu, Oct 25, 2012 at 2:55PM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Ford Fiesta test 2

It seems like it's almost every week that there is another recall from Ford. In fact, give or take, it has been. This week, another 154,604 brand new 2012-2013 Fiesta models has been called back to the dealership. It seems that cars built from November 3, 2009 - September 21, 2012 have passenger side air bags that will not deploy during a side impact collision if the passenger seat is empty. Though the Fiesta's manual does explain this issue, it has been found out that right rear passenger would not be protected in the event of a side impact collision if the passenger seat was empty.

Ford has said it will contact owners in the next two weeks to reprogram the Fiesta's computer to allow the side airbag to deploy. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332 with questions or to set up an appointment for a fix.

Toyota Recalls 2.5 Million Cars

On: Tue, Oct 16, 2012 at 10:09AM | By: Lou Ruggieri

Toyota Recalls 2.5 Million Cars test 2

Sigh. That's about all one can do at this point when it comes to recalls and Toyota. It isn't even the fact that this recall isn't that incredibly significant (though any defect that can potentially cause a fire in the vehicle doesn't quite qualify as insignificant either), it is the fact that again, this is another Toyota recall of more than 2.5 million cars -- 2,519,424 to be exact. The recall affects 13 models spanning three model years. The Toyota Camry, Camry HV, Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Rav4, Sequoia, Tundra, Yaris, as well as the Scion XB and XD, and finally the Toyota-built Pontiac Vibe. All of these cars potentially suffer from a poorly built power window master switch. The switches were supposed to be made using a specific amount of lubrication to help stave off overheating, however they did not all receive the proper amount of lubrication, and thus are prone to overheating and potentially melting and even possibly catching on fire. Clearly this is not a good thing.

Again, it's not that this recall is of such substantial magnitude that it will put Toyota out of business. It is more the fact that this is yet another small little production mistake that the Toyota of old simply would not have made. For a company that had built a reputation of value and attention to detail, this is just one more piece of evidence that they have gotten away from that philosophy -- at least for a few years.

Owners can contact dealers to schedule their free fix, which will either be the addition of a heat inhibiting grease or a complete replacement of the switch in question. Read on for the full report and list of model years affected.
