116 Mpg-E Fiat 500e Electric Car Debuts In LA

116 Mpg-E Fiat 500e Electric Car Debuts In LA test 2

Fiat has already told journalists that it did not want to build the 500e electric car and expects to lose money on every model sold. So it must have been with begrudging chagrin that it debuted the new electrified mini car at the 2012 LA Auto Show.

The reason that Fiat bothered with the 500e at all is simple: meeting California's requirements for zero emissions vehicles. As such, the car will only be available in California when it launches next spring. Because electric cars remain a niche market and the 500 itself has struggled in the United States, we don't anticipate that many non-Californians will be heartbroken about the decision.

New Lexus IS Sedan Coming To Detroit Next Month test 2

Lexus announced this week that it will be debuting the new IS at the 2013 North American International Auto Show on Tuesday, January 15. For those that don't follow auto shows, the NAIAS is known more simply as the Detroit Auto Show.

In a brief, three-lined press release, Lexus describes the new IS: "Inspired by the acclaimed LF-CC concept and with design cues of the LFA, the new IS has been completely redesigned, inside and out."

No Encore For The Acura ZDX

No Encore For The Acura ZDX test 2

George Carlin once said, "Too many choices America, it's not healthy."  And while it may not be appropriate to explain Carlin's preamble to that statement on a public forum, one thing we can extrapolate from the famous comedian is that those words may not be truer than in the automotive realm.

Hopefully the folks over at Acura have a sense of humor because if not, they may not be taking the exit of the ZDX after just three models years very well. Yup, that's right. The car-no-wait-truck-no-wait-SUV-no-wait-whatever ZDX has simply not sold well at all for Honda's luxury division. To throw out some basic numbers, since its debut in 2010, Acura has sold a paltry 5,465 ZDX models in two full model years. By comparison, BMW has sold almost four times that number of X6 models in that that same time period.

Ford Fusion Named 2013 'Green Car Of The Year'

Ford Fusion Named 2013 'Green Car Of The Year' test 2

The Ford Fusion was awarded the title of ‘Green Car of the Year’ by Green Car Journal today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I sense you are surprised. “The Ford Fusion? An American midsize sedan?” That’s right. Considering that previous winners include the Chevy Volt (a plug-in hybrid) and Honda Civic CNG (a natural gas-powered compact car), you’re probably not the only person left scratching their head. So what was it that made Ford’s new midsize sedan stand above other notable contenders (such as the all-electric Nissan LEAF)?

EPA Kicks Hyundai And Kia Out Of The 40 MPG Club

EPA Kicks Hyundai And Kia Out Of The 40 MPG Club test 2

As is evident in competitive sports, where top athletes (we're looking at you Armstrong) are quietly but consistently breaking rules and ethics to get ahead, sometimes winning requires an edge. Hyundai may be the most fuel efficient brand in America, but it's been cutting a few corners to maintain that distinction. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently found that the Korean automaker overstated fuel economy claims. The agency found discrepancies between its own audit and the numbers given by the automaker. Hyundai and Kia will be busy taking the proverbial red marker to fuel economy stickers as a result.

End Of An Icon: VW Camper Soon To Be No More

End Of An Icon: VW Camper Soon To Be No More test 2

Many Americans probably think that the Volkswagen Transporter T2 - the VW Microbus, if you will - ended production sometime in the haze-filled days of the 1970s. Truth is, Volkswagen has been offering the T2 in South America for decades; it just traded it in for a more modernized (and less stylish) series of Transporters in markets like the United States and Europe. Unfortunately, Brazilian regulations are about to get too tough, and Volkswagen is planning the official global end of the Microbus after 63 years.

Toyota Prius May Get Sportier

Toyota NS4 concept test 2

Limited size, frumpy styling and great gas mileage - it's a formula that's been defining hybrids and electric cars since they've launched. No car better exemplifies this than the original lean, green machine, the Toyota Prius. The hybrid's styling is enough to draw snickers from strangers and jokes from friends, but its 50 mpg makes drivers plenty content to ignore any negativity from the peanut gallery.

Prius drivers of the future may get the best of both worlds. According to a Toyota executive, the next-generation Prius may trade in the small-hatch shape for something with more visual appeal.

Confirmation Of Porsche's 458 Fighter

Confirmation Of Porsche's 458 Fighter test 2

We've been hearing tell of a mid-level Porsche supercar since around the time Stuttgart made the 918 Spyder official. The car would slide between the 911 line-up and the 918 Spyder hybrid, going after the turf occupied by cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. A new report confirms the car is indeed in development.

Porsche chief Matthias Muller told Auto Express that Porsche is indeed working on a Ferrari 458 competitor. Muller stopped short of naming the car, but basic Porsche common sense tells us that it should be a three-digit number beginning with 9. Rumor has it, that number is 961.

Jeep Wrangler Sand Trooper test 2

When we think of aftermarket customization, some of the first categories to come to mind include "muscle car," "Japanese sports car" and "hardcore off-roader." Indeed, all of those categories were represented in this year's SEMA Awards. Some of the most iconic models to grace those categories were declared the hottest to outfit with aftermarket parts.

Ford Finds That Your Car May Be A Rolling Petri Dish

Ford Finds That Your Car May Be A Rolling Petri Dish test 2

TV hosts wielding black lights have long turned our stomachs in regard to the glaring lack of cleanliness in hotel rooms. Ford shows us that germs and disease are lurking much closer to home. In a recent study with the University of Michigan, Ford found that the vehicle is essentially a four-wheeled orgy of microorganisms.

Ford studied 10 individual areas of the car, including steering wheels, radio buttons, door handles, window switches and gear shift knobs, collecting samples from employee and company vehicles. It found evidence of bacteria growth in most locations, with the highest concentrations around the cup holder and on the steering wheel.

McLaren MP4-12C Is Neiman Marcus' Holiday Car test 2

Now that we've seen the P1, the MP4-12C is the other McLaren. But it's still a high-performance piece of mechanical engineering that most can only dream about owning. That's especially true when it's done up in a gorgeous special edition paint job, accessorized generously and offered as a Christmas gift for the rich and famous. The MP4-12C Spider is this year's Neiman Marcus car.

Each fall, Neiman Marcus gives us a car to drool over for the entire holiday season. Last year it was the Ferrari FF and the year before it was the Camaro Convertible. This year it's the Neiman Marcus Edition 2013 McLaren 12C Spider.
