Range Rover Sport sets record at Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Range Rover Sport sets record at Pikes Peak Hill Climb test 1-1

Years ago, Range Rovers were as British as bad teeth and kidney pie. Pomp & Circumstance came standard, and you could literally go anywhere you pleased. Of course, they started leaking oil on the assembly line, and they ran properly only twice a month. But for those two days, you felt like the King of the World.

Ford bought the storied off-road brand from BMW in 2000 and promptly fixed the leaks, and had an exorcism performed on the electrics. The anesthetized Range Rover could now journey down Rodeo Drive without embarrassing itself, and it could even make the return trip without the aid of a tow truck. This new-found reliability allowed Land Rover to expand the Range Rover product line, and the asphalt-themed Range Rover Sport became the preferred ride of aristocratic playboys from Miami to Milan.

The app will now be available whether or not the owner decides to pay for other OnStar services.

Four-Doored Vette: Chevy's $44,500 SS Sedan test 1-1

The 2014 Chevrolet SS is the sedan for muscle lovers who need a little extra room. Chevy's first performance sedan since 1996, the SS packs a rare combination of room for five and more than 400 hp. Chevy announced a base price of $44,470 this week. That price includes a $995 destination fee.

Official: 2014 Chevrolet SS goes on sale test 1-1

It's been nearly two decades since Chevrolet had a muscle-bound rear-drive sedan in its lineup. The last one was a Corvette-powered monster called the Impala SS, and people loved it. Problem was, fullsize SUVs were all the rage in 1996. So Chevy decided to stop production of its snarling gazelle and use that production line to build more profitable SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe.

GM brought back the RWD super sedan in 2012, when it started importing a re-badged version of the Australian-made Holden Caprice. But the Chevrolet Caprice PPV was strictly a police model, which left the enthusiast market a bit... cold. Granted, if you wanted a kid-friendly American steroid-special, you could go for the 470-hp Dodge Charger SRT8, or the AWD Ford Taurus SHO (365-hp). But GM fans were SOL, until today, that is.

Almost 10 Percent of American Households Don't Own a Car test 1-1

We knew cars were becoming less and less popular, thanks in part to young folks who would rather travel the world over bandwidth than via asphalt, but we didn't quite know how drastically the phenomenon was affecting car ownership numbers until a new report. According to automotive research firm CNW, 9.3 percent of American households did not have a single car parked outside as of last year.

Electric vehicles still aren't competitive with ICE vehicles price-wise, but they're getting closer every year. Chevy priced its Spark EV subcompact this week, showing a price that drops below the $20,000 mark for those eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

Infiniti Working on Luxury Leaf With Wireless Charging test 1-1

The electric car market is quickly filling out. What was once a polar market of six-figure sports cars (Tesla Roadster) and tiny subcompacts (Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi iMiev, etc.) is opening its borders and becoming more diverse. The Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid has spawned the Cadillac ELR, and the Volt's original rival, the Nissan Leaf, is soon to spawn a luxury version of its own. Infiniti is working on a luxury Nissan Leaf spin-off and plans to equip it with wireless induction charging.

New Cars Have Shortening Shelf Life test 1-1

When you buy a new smartphone or computer, you have about a week of enjoying owning the coolest, latest technology. Then, it's replaced by something with a more powerful processor, better screen or cooler feature. A year after you bought your phone, it's so obsolete that the manufacturer is replacing it with an entirely new version. Your consumer electronics really don't have that much of a shelf life. According to a new study, the car may be the next consumer good to experience a micro shelf life.

Chrysler Working on 6.2-liter V8 Muscle Engine test 1-1

Over at GM, you have the all-new 2014 Corvette, and its sure-to-follow packages like the ZR1 and Z06. Then you have the Camaro, and all its packages including the ZL1 and all-new Z28. At Chrysler, you have an all-new super muscle car in the SRT Viper, and you have SRT Viper packages like the Time Attack. But what you don't have is a Challenger package in the vein of the ZL1 (or Ford Mustang Shelby GT500). Yet. According to several reports, Chrysler is working to fill that void with an all-new 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine that will debut on the next-generation Challenger.

Are You Ready for 84 MPG? Meet the Elio [VIDEO]

Elio side view test 2

Automakers have been busy as bees over the last decade designing lightweight, fuel-efficient vehicles for a public increasingly suffering from price shock at the gas pumps. As a result, dozens of car models and even some light trucks now average 25+ miles per gallon on the highway. Hybrids like the Prius are even more fuel-stingy, getting 50 MPG or more.

But even Toyota's ultra-efficient savings champ is outdone by a new vehicle called the Elio, which can go 84 miles on a single gallon of regular unleaded. Scheduled to be released in 2014, the Elio is causing waves across the automotive world.
