A Tale of Two Car Fires

On: Tue, Jul 8, 2014 at 1:02PM | By: Karen Cook

A Tale of Two Car Fires test 1-1

This story is about another Tesla Model S fire. It seems like this happens frequently but does it really, or is it just that we don’t hear about the “other” vehicles that catch on fire? Tesla says its vehicles are safer that gas-powered cars and it seems that even with more safety modifications being made to the Model S, news reporters want to point out every instance of the electric car catching fire.

Chrysler Catches GM's Illness test 1-1

You know how when one kid at school gets a cold, lots of kids at school end up with a cold? I don’t know the precise location of General Motors factories in relation to Chrysler’s, but it seems like GM’s ignition switch disease is spreading.

Stolen '57 Chevy Returned Home After 30 Years test 1-1

According to a 2011 memo from the California Highway Patrol, nearly 85% of cars reported stolen were recovered in 2011. That's not bad. However, what if you car was stolen 30 years ago? The odds of getting your stolen car back seem beyond remote... unless you're Californian Ian Wilson, that is, who had his 1957 Chevy returned after three decades.

If you’ve lost a car and are still holding on to hope, this story will remind you not to give up on seeing your car again. If you've never lost a car, this story will still put a smile on your face.

2014 Nissan Leaf Recall test 1-1

Nissan is issuing a recall on 196 2014 Leafs (Leaves?) because there is a problem with the vehicle shutting down. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains that the problem is with the motor control circuit board which can cause the inverter to fail. If the inverter fails the vehicle will shut down thereby increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.

2015 Chevy Suburban: The Reality of a Post-Sloan World

2015 Chevrolet Suburban test 2

On the heels of a gorgeous press release from GM, touting the 2015 Suburban’s road trip functionality, consumers will no doubt be reminded of the 1990s and early 2000s. During that particular GM epoch, the company acquired far too many brands and built a myriad of dubious vehicles. Nobody likes to remember the Pontiac Aztek, with the exception of maybe Walter White fans.

The problem was… GM insisted on building vehicles which didn’t suit the needs of the company’s clientele. It was almost as if GM hoped that gimmicky infomercial-type vehicles would be the next great automotive retail innovation. But, wait, there’s more! The brand new 2015 Chevy Suburban seems to be returning GM to their pre-Cruze days (when form and function were mutually exclusive).

Ford Has Cars That Know Who You Are... or Aren't test 1-1

Facial recognition is the new craze in automobile technology. Mercedes-Benz has a camera that can tell if the driver is getting drowsy and warn him to get some rest. Peugeot Citroen has one that can detect the emotions of the driver. Not sure what your car can do about your anger though.

CarMax's 125-Point Inspection Doesn't Include Recalls test 1-1

CarMax is currently dealing with car safety advocacy groups across the nation who are up in arms over the car sellers’ advertising practices. CarMax, Inc. states in its ads that all its vehicles must pass a 125-point inspection before they are offered for sale. The problem is that this inspection does not check for open recalls or whether the car has been previously recalled and repaired. The ads lead buyers to believe that all issues have been investigated and/or repaired when this is not the case.

Detroit Electric Readies the Launch of 'World's Fastest Electric Vehicle' test 1-1

Ever since the Tesla Roadster retired a few years back, the world of electric vehicles has been a little less exciting. The Model S is a nice replacement, and there are a number of high-end electric supercar designs floating around, but the market really misses a sporty, semi-attainable electric two-door. It's a void that Detroit Electric will soon fill with the new SP:01, a car it calls the world's fastest production electric vehicle.
