BMW, Porsche, Subaru All Post Sharp Sales Increase In October

On: Wed, Nov 3, 2010 at 10:21AM | By: Sherry Christiansen

2011 BMW X3 test 2

Subaru, BMW and Porsche posted sharp increases in October U.S. auto sales today as manufacturers appear poised to report a solid month. Analysts are saying that the October seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) is expected to be the highest since the falsely inflated automotive sales numbers that occurred during the government Cash- For-Clunkers program that offered $3 billion in buying incentives in September of 2009.

According to AutoData Corporation; “The average of nine analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg is a SAAR of 11.9 million, slightly higher than September's 11.8 million. Excluding sales volume for September of 2009; 11.9 million is the highest sales reported by the automotive industry since September of 2008." Due to Election Day, many manufacturers have delayed the release of October sales numbers, but others such as BMW, Porsche, and Subaru have already posted huge gains in last months’ auto sales.

Nissan Shows New Mobility Concept test 1-1

Exploring the ground between the subcompact and personal mobility devices like the Segway has been a popular course of action lately. The latest example is this mobility concept from Nissan, a vehicle which it unveiled this week. In a clear case of the engineering department wearing out all its creativity on the concept itself, Nissan chose the name "New Mobility Concept" for the tiny urban car.

Like the Renault Twizy, which was shown in full production garb at the Paris Motor Show, the New Mobility Concept is powered by a small, 15-kW electric motor. The two-seat, zero-emissions concept can reach speeds of up to 47 mph and distances up to 60 miles per charge. Unlike the Twizy, there are no current production plans for the NMC, and Nissan is using it more as an exploratory vehicle. The company mentioned a "seamless mobility service" use, which would have the NMC vehicles linking urban drivers with public transportation in order to cut down on traffic and pollution.

Wireless Vehicle Charging System Launches In London test 1-1

Last week, we took a look at a new partnership that is working toward a wireless charging system for plug-in hybrids and EVs. At the time, we mentioned it's not the only system of its kind out there; not a full week later, a new system has launched in London. Designed by New Zealand-based start-up HaloIPT, the system, which is hailed as the world's first wireless charging system for vehicles, is even more intriguing than other systems in that it can provide for charging when parked and when in motion.

Toyota Tacoma X-Runner RTR Racing Truck: Hauling Takes On More Than One Meaning test 1-1

Toyota’s Tacoma X Runner RTR is a “ready to race” concept  pick-up that will be featured at the 2010 SEMA Show. A high performance vehicle that sprang from a “parts bin build with all but a few components currently available for Toyota products,” according to a recent Automotive News article. The supercharged 5.7-liter V-8 engine is able to pull the RTR from 0-60 in just 3.76 seconds which is remarkable for what Toyota calls an un-calibrated drag truck "that just came out of TRD’s garage," according to Toyota Press Room.

The Tacoma X-Runner RTR achieves its performance with a stock, current-generation Tundra 5.7-liter V8 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Supercharger Kit.  The engine has a whopping 504 horsepower and 550 lb.-ft. of torque and runs on premium gas rather than race fuel.

GM Closes 500 Dealerships Despite Congressional Objections test 1-1

In spite of the fact that approximately 24 congressional members (both Republican and Democratic) voiced objection, General Motors Co. proceeded to close the doors to 500 dealerships on October 31st,  as planned.

There were 22 house members asking automakers to hold off on termination of dealerships until the completion of a federal investigation that was implemented in order to address allegations of foul play that may have occurred during the process of selecting which dealerships would be forced to close shop.  Republican Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and Rep. Steven LaTourette, congressman suggested that the Obama administration suspend the 500 GM dealerships scheduled to be terminated October 31st.  Senator Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio was also one of the members of congress asking for a delay in dealer closings while waiting for the courts to rule on appeals filed by dealers involved in the recent arbitration hearings.

Lexus Launches Real Life Driving Simulation Technology test 1-1

The next big thing from Lexus is not a car!  Lexus has designed the world’s most advanced driving simulator, located in Higashifuji, Japan where the company’s research campus is housed. The simulator is a dome-shaped structure, 15 feet high and 56 feet in diameter, located on top of a series of complex interlocking full motion tracks that run across a room the size of a football field.

Step inside the dome to discover a genuine Lexus car mounted to a turntable that allows drivers to test drive the actual steering wheel, gear shift, and accelerator. An imaging system with high definition displays provide a 360-degree view of roads around the vehicle. Traffic is visible and audible, as are images of a city surrounding the scene, just like it would be in a real life driving scenario.

Consumer Reports recently released the results of a consumer survey on green car buying that unveiled some interesting attitudes. While most consumers did admit to considering the green factor in a new car purchase, it's still not a primary a concern.

Election Day Postpones Monthly Sales Posting for Many Automakers test 1-1

Will automakers postpone monthly reporting for 24 hours when the monthly posting date happens to fall on Election Day? According to automotive news.com “automakers are splitting their ballot.” This year represents the first time the coincidence has happened in 6 years.

Many automotive brands, such as Hyundai, Kia, and Subaru, have decided to stick with Tuesday for posting monthly sales records, which happens to be the same day that the U.S. voters get an opportunity to participate in perhaps the most significant election of the decade. The political party that controls the United States House and Senate (as well as 37 state governorships) will be elected, and automakers fear their earning statements might affect the results.

New Details On 50 LA Show Debuts

New Details On 50 LA Show Debuts test 1-1

In an effort to gain more prominence in the auto show circuit, the LA Auto Show, which originally took place in early January pushed its dates back several years ago. This move separated it from other major shows like the North American International Auto Show that takes place in mid-January in Detroit, as well as from the holiday season. Beginning with the 2007 show, LA found a new slot in mid-November/early-December of each year.

The move back the calendar is paying off for LA in that more automakers are using the City of Angels as a backdrop for big unveils and North American debuts. In July, the show provided an initial look at some of the 20 world debuts that are coming to the show, and yesterday it issued some more details on what we'll see.
