The Ford GT May Be Back, Baby! And It's a Hybrid! test 1-1

America is slowly becoming the new Italy. The boot may have Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Pagani, but we have SSC, TranStar Racing, a new Dodge Viper, and now...a new Ford GT. Allegedly. Yes, I'd rather have the former three, but those four ain't bad. According to a recent report on Auto Express, Ford is deep in the works on an all-new GT supercar that will pack more power and performance than ever. And it will pack it in a hybrid powertrain.

According to the rumor, the new mid-engined car will have a hybrid powertrain similar in design to the Porsche 918 Spyder. A supercharged V8 around 600-hp will provide primary motivation, but will get an extra power boost from a front-mounted electric motor when needed for acceleration.

BMW's New Try-Before-You-Buy Program test 1-1

Grocery stores stumbled upon a very smart marketing campaign: offer customers free samples. BMW has seized upon that concept for the roll out of its Megacity Vehicle electric car. The German automaker plans to offer the Megacity Vehicle through its successful car-sharing program that is all the rage in Europe. Technically, these aren’t going to be free samples, but it is certainly a proactive way to give folks a taste of the new car design and perhaps most importantly, the luxury car driving experience.

Automakers Go All Out For Super Bowl Spots test 1-1

What does it take to get 100 million people to focus? That’s simple: a football game. But not just any football game. We’re talking Super Bowl. Last year, 106 million viewers tuned into the Super Bowl. This year’s grudge match between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers promises to be a record breaker in terms of viewership. Companies began lining up for coveted ad spots back in October way before the teams were even picked. How much for a thirty-second spot? Try a cool $3 million. Automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen, GM, Audi and, for the first time, Mercedes are among some of the major auto brands that will be showing off new cars. Apparently, $3 million for 30 seconds is a bargain.

Ford Recalls F-150 For Faulty Door Handles test 1-1

Don’t know what to get your significant other for Valentine’s Day? Well, the Ford Motor Company has a special treat in store for owners of their popular selling F-150 pickup trucks. Starting on Valentine’s Day, 281,000 of those trucks will be invited back to the dealership in a country-wide recall to fix a problem with its door handles. Perhaps this isn’t the most romantic Valentine’s Day present, but it may be the safest one!

2012 Boxster S Black Edition test 2

Getting tired of minimally modified Porsche "special" editions yet? I sure am. But apparently Porsche (and presumably buyers) can't get enough. Because Porsche is planning yet another modified, limited run model. The recently announced 911 Black Edition gets a little brother in the the Boxster S Black Edition, bringing some engine and styling modifications to less than 1,000 Boxster S models.

Automakers Resume Operations During Winter Storm

Automakers Resume Operations During Winter Storm test 1-1

In the last couple of days, the big story across most of America has been snow, snow, and more snow. Pretty much the only happy folks were all the kids who got to stay home from school. If school buses can’t navigate the roads then it’s a safe bet that most trucks are idled as well. Without trucks there can be not auto parts deliveries. Without auto parts assembly workers have nothing to assemble. That is the circle of life in the auto world. Fortunately, the plows and salt trucks have been working around the clock to clear the roads and the auto makers in the northeast are back on line.

Downer of the Day: No Subaru Forester S-Edition for North America test 1-1

An SUV with the sporty, powerful 2.5-liter flat four turbo from the Impreza WRX? What could be better? Actually being able to buy it, that's what. Subaru indicated this week that the Subaru Forester S-Edition that it introduced at the Australian International Motor Show last fall will not be coming to the North American market anytime in the near future. It has, however, launched in Australia and will make it to China later this year.

The Forester S-Edition will be the new top-of-line Forester SUV and will derive 259 horses and 256 lb-ft of torque from its WRX turbo engine, giving it 40 more horses than the the Forester XT. That engine will be mated to a five-speed paddle-shift STI transmission. The Forester S-Edition also gets sportier suspension and AWD than other Forester models.

World Car Nominees Announced test 1-1

Looking past Geneva, the 2011 New York Auto Show will take place in April. At the show, the World Car of the Year honors will be awarded to the best green car, best performance car, and best overall car in the world. The field will get narrower in Geneva, but nominees for each category were announced this week, providing a look at which cars will be vying for the prestigious titles.

The Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf will once again be competing, this time for World Green Car of the Year. Chevy has been trouncing the Leaf here in the U.S., sweeping major awards like the Motor Trend Car of the Year, Green Journal Green Car of the Year, and North American Car of the Year. The Leaf, on the other hand, has a wider footprint and has had more success in Europe, winning awards like the European Car of the Year.

Transformer Flying Car Program Takes Off

Transformer Flying Car Program Takes Off test 1-1

Is our long wait finally coming to an end? Will we really get a glimpse at a genuine practical flying car? If the United States Department of Defense has their way we certainly will. Yes, that would be the U.S. Department of Defense, or more specifically, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, who would like nothing more than to have a flying car in their arsenal of combat vehicles. Last April, DARPA put out the call for a sturdy off-road type of vehicle that can carry up to four passengers and, oh, by the way, it has to fly. They referred to their mission as “terrain-independent mobility with full flight capabilities for a vertical takeoff and landing,” translated: “Give us a flying Humvee.”

Chevy To Debut Cruze Hatchback At Geneva test 1-1

The Chevy Cruze has stood in the shadow of the Volt, but at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, it will get some spotlight of its own. Chevy announced that it will debut the production version of the Cruze hatchback at next month's show. The production model will look a lot like the concept version shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last September.

For now, the Cruze hatch will launch as a global vehicle, and Chevy has not yet committed to bringing it here to North America. According to reports, the question of the car's availability here is still up in the air.

A Dance With The Devil

A Dance With The Devil test 1-1

If you are one of the lucky few on the planet to be in the market for a new Lamborghini, there is something you need to know before you walk into the dealership of the raging bull. Buying a Lamborghini is not just about buying a pretty car or a status symbol, it’s not just about having a lot of money to invest into a car that is fast, no, no, my friend, there is a lot more at stake than just a monthly car payment that exceeds a good deal of mortgage payments. No, when you plunk down the equivalent of a blue-collar life savings as a down payment for one of these beasts, you are making a deal with the devil.
