On: Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 9:35AM | By: Chris Weiss

Porsche test 2

Not long after Porsche confirmed that it was building the 918 Spyder, rumors about other super-911 plans started flowing. Word was that Porsche was going to build a second supercar to slot between the 918 and the 911. Well, according to Autocar, those plans are alive and well, and Porsche will be positioning the car against the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C.

Porsche chief Matthias Mueller gave a peek behind the scenes: "We’re looking to extend the range; we’ve got an idea to do another mid-engine model. We’re thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder."

Certain Vehicle Colors Are Suspended Due To Shortage

Certain Vehicle Colors Are Suspended test 2

The massive Japanese earthquake and tsunami earlier this month has been an ongoing story that will likely continue to unfold for weeks to come. In addition to the deaths, injury, and turmoil within Japan, the events have taken a huge toll on business and industry. The global auto industry will be deeply affected by parts shortages and production slowdowns for months to come. Japanese automakers have had to shut down operations, and automakers in other countries have been similarly affected. The U.S. market has already started to feel the effects of decreased auto supply and increased pricing.

One interesting subplot to come out of the greater story is the shortage of certain auto colors. Several automakers have had to halt production on specific colored models due to a shortage of a pigment called Xirallic. The pigment is made by a Japanese plant that is located near the damaged nuclear reactor.

BMW Working On 4-Series Line test 2

According to several sources, BMW is working on a 4-Series line that could compete with the Audi A5 Sportback. Many observers have speculated that BMW was readying a new 3-Series GT four-door coupe/hatchback design (think 5-Series GT, but smaller) and now the rumor mill is saying that perhaps the 3-Series GT is actually a 4-Series GT.

If BMW comes out with a 4-Series GT, it would be one of several vehicles in the 4-Series family. There would be a sedan, conventional coupe, and convertible, as well.

Pagani Huayra Roadster test 2

Well, here's some good news straight from the top of the Pagani food chain. Horacio Pagani confirmed that his supercar company plans to build a Huayra convertible within the next couple years. According to its founder, the company is also considering an entry level model. When your current car slots in at well over a million dollars, we're not sure how "entry level" we're talking, but it's just good to know that more Paganis are [potentially] on the horizon.

Social Media Bosses Now Carrying Marketing Clout

Social Media Guru test 2

Normally, when a CEO or other executive leaves an automaker, it's news outside of the relatively cloistered community of automotive journalists and industry observers. Now, when someone in charge of a company's social-media approach makes a career change, there's almost the same amount of coverage.

For example, Christopher Barger spent four years at GM, helping that company develop its social-media strategy.

De Tomaso Pantera Will Price at $400,000

De Tomaso Pantera test 2

Word that the planned sports coupe from the new De Tomaso would, indeed, be a Pantera revival came earlier this month out of Geneva. That was great news, but left us with all kinds of questions, like what would power the car, what it would look like, and how much it would cost. While two-thirds of those questions remain unanswered, we have an answer to one: the Pantera will cost a rather lofty 250,000 pounds ($410,000), according to company executives. That price point puts it above the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 ($379,700), so it looks like De Tomaso plans a serious, performance coupe.

Toyota and Honda Extend Shutdowns test 2

Two of Japan's Big 3 have extended production shutdowns until this weekend, in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami events that ravaged Japan on March 11. Both companies are experiencing issues with parts supplies and have been forced into extending shutdowns.

Honda said yesterday that it will extend the shutdown of two auto plants and a motorcycle plant until March 27. Toyota extended its shutdown until March 26.

Veloster Details Unleashed!

2012 Hyundai Veloster test 2

Today’s world is fast-paced. Each day we are overwhelmed with new data and exciting stories, a virtual media blitz. The all new 2012 Hyundai Veloster is a car which not only helps drivers to navigate and command the media realm, but seems to have functional design elements as well. If you’re in the market for a compact coupe and can wait until summer 2011, the Veloster is a great option to consider. Perhaps the most important aspect of the Veloster is the standard 7-inch touchscreen which serves as the command center for navigation, staying in touch with comrades, uploading photos, using Pandora, and, most importantly, watching movies or playing video games on your the Xbox 360. Fear not, parents, drivers can watch and game only whilst in the park position.

Tesla Roadster On an 1,800-Mile Australian Tour

On: Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 8:52AM | By: Chris Weiss

Tesla Roadster test 2

If you were about to indulge on an 1,800-mile road trip—roughly Kansas City to San Francisco—an electric car would probably be your last vehicle of choice, what with range anxiety and limited charging locations holding you back. And that's precisely why Tesla is holding what it calls the "Oz Goes Electric" tour, to prove that you can complete that type of journey in an electric vehicle, albeit in Australia. The three-day tour is of 1,800 miles along Australia's eastern coast—the perfect place to put a red, electric convertible to the test.

While an 1,800-mile trek by electric car is an intimidating thing for most drivers, the Tesla Roadster is better equipped for it than most electric vehicles. Tesla rates the car's range at 245 miles, and it once achieved the record for longest drive on a single charge in a production vehicle with a 310.6 mile journey, also in Australia. You'd have all kinds of trouble doing that in a 100-mile Nissan Leaf.

General Motors Forced To Shut Down Plants

General Motors Forced To Shut Down Plants test 1-1

It's no secret that the Japanese auto industry has been reeling from the earthquake that hit the nation more than a week ago. All of Japan's major automakers have been forced to shut down certain operations, and some shut-downs will continue until later this week, if not longer. With a ravaged parts supply chain, damaged power supply network, and disrupted transportation infrastructure, Japan's auto industry may not be completely back on track for months to come.

But Japan's auto industry isn't the only one that's being affected. Automakers here in the States rely on a list of parts from Japanese manufacturers, and are starting to feel the effects. GM has been forced to shut down two plants here in the U.S. and may shut down more before the story is over.

Koenigsegg Details Specs Of The Agera R

On: Thu, Mar 24, 2011 at 2:44PM | By: Chris Weiss

Koenigsegg Agera R test 2

We learned just about all there was to know about the Koenigsegg Agera R back at the Geneva Motor Show: 5.0-liter twin turbo V8 worth 1,115 hp and 885 lb-ft, 2,926 lbs. worth of  weight, 273 mph "theoretical top speed", and custom gear from Thule and ski-maker Extrem for a special winter package. We were impressed.

What we didn't learn, however, was nearly as important as what we did. Koenigsegg offered the very shifty 273-mph speed, but didn't say a word about acceleration or other performance specs. This week, it's come clean.
