Finally! This Japanese sports car duo gets its due with record-setting sales at AA's Auburn Auction test 1-1

If you were one of the people who thought Japanese sports cars were criminally undervalued, you should feel good in the knowledge that you were right. But unless you also PURCHASED one of those absolute steals at their rock-bottom prices, that feeling ain’t gonna last long because—as shown at Auctions America’s Auburn, IN, sale Aug. 31–Sept. 4—it would seem that your chance to get in on any of the 20 or 30 lower floors of this exploding market has passed you by.

Then, again, seeing as how the 2017 NSX hasn’t made its full impact on the value of its predecessors yet (up or down)—and that there’s supposed to be another Supra on the way in 2019 that could do the same—there might yet be some money on the table for you if you act fast…

H-D & EPA Settle ASAP, Despite AMA RPM Act Introduction test 1-1

Harley-Davidson (H-D) has reached an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); it calls for a $12 million fine for selling after-market motorcycle engine tuners that add performance for racing and more emissions for the rest of us. At least 340,000 have been sold since 2008, when the EPA’s Emission Standards for Highway Motorcycles took effect.

Maximum Monterey Part 1: Mecum markets a multitude of mega-exotics from Italy! test 1-1

My condolences. I heard about your granduncle Archibald's passing. Not to be rude, but wasn't it odd that a recluse who lived in a decommissioned missile silo in the middle of Nowheresville had a quarter-billion-dollars' worth of gold bullion stockpiled? I mean, it's good for you, as you're his sole heir. What? You get the money only if you spend it all in one place, between August 18th and 20th, to assemble one of the greatest collections of mega-dollar performance cars?

Barrett-Jackson to feature the four-ton "Thundertaker" at April Palm Beach sale

Thundertaker custom Cadillac hearse test 2

Not that many people say this very often, but it's probably a good thing that I'm not rich. I would, naturally, spend a large amount of my money on cars, which is not a bad thing, it's just that the cars I'd spend money on wouldn't exactly endear me to the rest of my family.

Granted, having the world's largest collection of station wagons wouldn't be the worst thing for them to inherit, but even with the recent—and forecast—increase in values for wagons, chances are that they'd just break even if they sold the lot.

Golf GTi + Performance Chip = Brain Damage ?

Hero test 2

One of the easiest ways to go faster— i.e. generate extra horsepower—in cars built in the last few decades is to remap the car’s electronic brain. Service providers often allege that not only will their work allow the engine to develop more power, gas mileage will improve too due to the efficiency of the new, bespoke engine management tune. By definition, “chipping” must compromise reliability, since components such as clutches and driveshafts engineered to manage ‘X’ horsepower are now being subjected to ‘X+’ horsepower. The practice remains extremely popular since most people “chipping” a new car do not expect to still have the car four or five years or thousands of miles down the road, and the change is both easily reversed and impossible to detect without diagnostic tools. Illustrating this, the car I drove was leased, and soon to be returned. As the current keeper gave me the keys, he explained it had 274hp, up about 50 from standard, adding how “front wheel drivey” it was, a comment I remembered throughout my time with the car.

How to Protect Your Vehicle From Road Salt test 1-1

New Year’s celebrations have come and gone, and for most parts of the country several months of winter remain. If you live in a snow-prone area, then you’re already familiar with how road salt can affect your car’s appearance. What you may not know is that salt can also promote rust, damage your vehicle’s paint job, and even affect its mechanical operation.

Every car company that can is making serious hay out of every anniversary they can find. Problem is, in a lot of cases, there have to be some asterisks slipped in due to, say, Chevy never producing a 1983 model Corvette, yet claiming an unbroken chain of manufacture since its introduction in 1953.

Hennessey Unveils Insane 600hp Replacement for the F-150 Raptor test 1-1

When John Hennessey gets ahold of a vehicle, things tend to get a bit crazy (Remember the 270 mph Lotus Exige that was dubbed the Venom GT?). Blowers get bolted on, horsepower goes through the roof, and ordinarly fast cars are transformed into roadgoing missiles. Lucky for us, Capt. Overkill has created yet another Frankenmobile. And this one’s designed to fill in for the yet-to-be-released 2016 Ford F-150 Raptor…

Putin to Build Fleet of State Super-Vehicles test 1-1

Being the head of Russia’s government has its perks, even in these post-Soviet days.  As proof, President Vladimir Putin is pushing ahead with plans for a fleet of custom-built vehicles that would turn even the wealthiest dot-com billionaires green with envy.  Dubbed “Project Cortege,” the initiative formally started in 2011, after earlier efforts were put on hold due to economic and financial issues.
