B.C. Woman Survives 7 Weeks Via Chevy Astro

On: Wed, May 11, 2011 at 10:42AM | By: Chris Salamone

B.C. Woman Survives 7 Weeks Via Chevy Astro test 1-1

What’s worse than surviving in a Chevy Astro? Surviving in a Chevy Astro stuck in the Nevada wilderness with below freezing temperatures and almost no snacks to munch on. Unfortunately, when Rita and Albert Chretien left British Columbia to embark on a 1,200 mile road trip to Las Vegas they somehow managed to land in the exact above-mentioned scenario. Although details remain unclear, the Chretien’s Astro Van ended up stuck in the mud in the middle of the harsh Nevada wilderness.

After several days, pondering their situation, Albert decided that waiting was too risky and went out alone on foot to find some help. Rita sat by herself and without resources for seven weeks before a group of hunters spotted a small white flag wrapped around the van’s radio antenna. Rita's few sources of sustenance over forty-eight days formed a stringent college-reminiscent diet including a small bag of trail mix, hard candy bars, fish-oil tablets, and melted snow. Through the ordeal Rita lost nearly 30 pounds, but doctors claim she’s making a full recovery and can expect to be released from the hospital soon.

Is This The De Tomaso Pantera?

On: Fri, May 6, 2011 at 5:41PM | By: Chris Weiss

To Be Or Not To Be The De Tomaso Pantera? test 2

At the Geneva Motor Show, De Tomaso disappointed the world when it unveiled the Sports Luxury Sedan. You could almost hear the collective grunt of disenchantment. It wasn't so much that the SLS was bad (although it kind of was), it was that De Tomaso is a name that's almost synonymous with one car: the Pantera, an Italian sports coupe from the 80s/90s that has been sorely missed. Seeing as how Geneva was the first time we've seen a Pantera presence in more than half a decade, it would have been nice if it coincided with a re-launched Pantera.

While the SLS disappointed, news of a Pantera revival at the 2011 LA Auto Show later this year brought chins soaring back up. And today, a short spy video gives a glimpse at what is thought to be a camoed prototype of the Pantera.

Out In The Desert With The Jeep Pickup

Jeep JK-8 Independance test 2

Last month, Jeep and Mopar introduced a special kit called the JK-8 Independence. In short, it's a pickup kit that delivers a bed to the back of a Wrangler. It's pretty sweet option for the Jeep Wrangler line, given that Jeep has long lacked a production pickup model here in the States.

Unfortunately, the 2011 Easter Jeep Safari came and went, and we didn't really hear anything else about the JK-8 or other special edition Mopared Jeeps at the event. But a new video clip from PickupTrucks.com takes a closer look at the package in Moab.

Video: Sounds And Sights Of The Zagato Tz3 Stradale

Zagato TZ3 Stradale test 2

It made its grand debut last week, but the sexy, curvy TZ3 Stradale from Zagato was mostly interested in showing off its looks. This week, the TZ3 shows its personality and inside. We get to take a look inside the engine bay and underneath the tires. And we get to witness the special edition's personality through its throaty V8 grumble and on-road temperament. As they so often say, it's what's on the inside that counts.

Lamborghini Aventador Promo Video

Lamborghini Aventador Promo Video test 2

The Lamborghini Aventador really doesn't need a promotional campaign to make the masses covet it. All they really need to do is say it: New. Lamborghini. That's about all I'd need to hear in order to know that I wanted it. For those that are a little more cynical or jaded, additional information like 700 horsepower and 2.9 seconds to 62 mph should be enough to get them drooling.

But, apparently Sant A'gata Bolognese wanted to see the drool gushing out of mouths everywhere. Because they've given us a promo video that makes us want the Aventador LP700-4 more than ever.

BMW Tag Team Launches Premium Car Sharing

BMW Launches Premium Car Sharing test 2

Beginning this month, BMW and Sixt are launching a technologically advanced and incredibly practical car sharing program using the brand name DriveNow in Munich and Berlin. But BMW’s mobility concept is drastically different from other currently operating programs, such as Zipcar. DriveNow is the first brand to offer efficient premium cars and a broad range of service options. Vehicles can be dropped off anywhere within certain prearranged boundaries and randomly picked up by anyone needing to hire a car—thus speeding up the whole car sharing experience. Sixt is providing the IT know-how and rental support which DriveNow relies on.

Drivers who sign up for the program must register for a one-time fee of 29 Euros and plan to pay 29 cents per minute of use. Conveniently, the minute fee covers all costs (parking and fuel). If a car isn’t directly in front of you, or you feel lonely, or perhaps simply isolated, then registered participants can search for DriveNow vehicles on a handy Smart Phone application or via the interweb at drive-now.com. There’s just one catch.

Koenigsegg Agera R Gets Tested

On: Thu, Apr 14, 2011 at 3:09PM | By: Chris Weiss

Koenigsegg Agera R test 2

The world's fastest ski commuter has been lent to testers from Swedish auto rag Teknikensvarld. Unfortunately, as you could surmise from trying to pronounce the name of that magazine, Swedish isn't exactly the easiest language to follow. And journalist Erik Gustafsson ain't talking English. Luckily for us, speed, agility, and beautiful supercars are universal languages that can be understood with ease. So are smiles and elated exclamations.

The most powerful, promising supercar in a historical line that includes a former world-record holder, the Agera R is Koenigsegg's latest introduction. It made its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show last month, bringing 1115-hp and 885 lb-ft of torque along with it. That massive output is secured via a 5.0-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission corrals all those horses and puts them to use.

Ferrari 599 Successor To Be Lighter, More Powerful (+ Spy Video)

Ferrari 599 Successor test 2

Now that the Ferrari FF has been detailed, photographed, and filmed, auto-world rumors are turning to the next great Prancing Horse: the 599 GTB successor. According to a new report, Ferrari's top dog will get more bite in the way of a retuned engine. It will also lose some weight.

As told by an Autocar report, the next-gen 599, which is codenamed F152, will get upwards of 700-hp, a marked increase over the 599's 612-hp, an increase that will bring Ferrari in line with the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and the Pagani Huayra. If you look at the FF's recent jump to 651-hp—up from 533-hp in the 612 Scaglietti—it's not hard to believe that Ferrari will be looking at 700 + for the 599 successor. They'll achieve that with a tuned version of the FF's 6.3-liter V12.

Hats Off To Land Rover In Sierra Leone

Hats Off To Land Rover In Sierra Leone test 1-1

After eleven years of ‘official’ civil war and twenty years of physical and economic devastation, residents of Sierra Leone hope to build a brighter future. Land Rover is working to make that happen by supporting the Red Cross in its mission to aid people and communities in Sierra Leone to recover and create a better environment for all.

The eleven-year conflict claimed over 50,000 lives, destroyed communities, and left individuals and families physically and emotionally traumatized. Of particular interest are the children. The Red Cross estimates that nearly 17,000 kids have fought as child soldiers, even from the ripe age of six. These kids have witnessed and experienced unspeakable atrocities, but through the Child Advocacy and Rehabilitation (CAR) program they have a second chance to change their lives forever.

Silverado HD Slays Competition

On: Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 5:02PM | By: Chris Salamone

Head-to-head comparison test 2

Everyone knows the Silverado HD was recently named Motor Trend’s 2011 Truck of the Year. Yet, competitors like Ford and Dodge still offer quality trucks and The General needs to ensure consumers know which brand reigns supreme. GM’s global vehicle line executive for full size trucks, Rick Spina, recently stated that the company “wanted to get away from spec-sheet comparisons and show how these trucks perform in the real world." Perhaps the best way to do so is by a head-to-head comparison pitting the best against the best: HD vs. HD.

In so doing, Chevrolet created a heavy-duty pickup cage match in seven short videos, appropriately named HD to HD. Spina actually hosts with sidekick—Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie Long—instant credibility points here. But wait, you’re concerned this is a fluff piece meant to taint your completely unbiased opinion about pickup truck brands? Think again. GM employed AMCI to independently test the Silverado HD against the Ford Superduty and Ram HD.

Chevy Teases Next-Gen Malibu

2012 Chevy Malibu Teaser test 2

The 2012 Chevy Malibu is showing a little tail. Chevy released a teaser photo showcasing the driver-side taillights of the new car, in addition to a 1.5-minute video teaser. The car will be making back-to-back, worldwide appearances at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and the 2011 New York Auto Show, which will overlap later this month.
