Volvo's Game Changer, Or The First AWD Diesel Plug-In Hybrid

On: Tue, Sep 6, 2011 at 1:09PM | By: Chris Salamone

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid test 2

Volvo is a company synonymous with safety, AWD, and perhaps the geometric square. In 2012, Volvo will also be known for an entirely new achievement: the first practical plug-in hybrid. Just as Chevy plans to release the Volt, which features both a short range electric motor and the long term benefits of an internal combustion engine, Volvo is looking toward the future to blend technologies from plug-in hybrids and diesels alike in their latest V60.

To date, all mass-produced hybrid vehicles are powered by unleaded fuel. This is primarily because of the differences associated with starting diesel engines versus starting an electric motor. Diesels require oil pressure and usually some warm-up time. This newest V60 manages to meet that challenge with some kind of mechanical voodoo—allowing oil-pressure to build while the driver releases the brake and presses the start button.

Chevy's Calming New Commericals (Video)

Chevy's Calming New Commericals test 2

A couple weeks ago, we showed you the funny, new Dodge Durango commercials and Nissan’s “we’re back now” ads a week later. Now Chevy has a few new commercials for its Silverado and Tahoe. But unlike Dodge and Nissan’s which rely heavily on narration and comparing themselves to other car makers, Chevrolet’s new commercials are the exact opposite—not a single word spoken or rival company belittled.

According to Autoblog, the new Silverado and Tahoe ads will air mostly on The Outdoor Channel which makes complete sense once you watch them. They feature the soothing sounds of nature, the warm glow of sunrise, camouflaged good-ol’ boys… and, of course, Chevy trucks.

Admittedly, I’m not much of a hunter or fisherman, but even I can appreciate these ads. In 30 seconds, they provide that calming beauty of becoming one with nature experienced by waking up super early and sitting in a tree stand all day without waking up super early and sitting in a tree stand all day (sorry, hunters).

All three companies’ commercials—in my opinion—are marketing money well spent, but it’s nice to take a break from the mudslinging and name-calling and let the product tell its own story.

Read on to watch the videos.

Classic Car Cultist: Dymaxion

Dymaxion Car test 2

The year is 1933. An egg-shaped oddity rolls out during the Chicago World’s Fair. It has eleven seats, three wheels—using the rear wheel for steering—and a canvas roof. After stunning the world with the vehicle’s bizarre looks, an accident occurs which remains shrouded in mystery to this day. The Dymaxion car rolls over, executing the driver and seriously injuring the other two passengers.

One can only imagine how a three-wheel, rear-steering, oval-shaped vehicle might roll over.

Ferrari 458 Spider Unveiled test 1-1

The Ferrari 458 Spider is official! Thanks to months of leaks and rumors, there really isn't anything new to report, but we have the full scoop complete with the extra authority of a company-issued press release. After a big leak earlier this week, Ferrari decided to unveil the 458 Spider ahead of its Frankfurt public debut.

Cadillac Unveils Ciel Convertible Concept

Cadillac Unveils Ciel Convertible Concept test 2

Last Wednesday, when Cadillac announced that it was producing the Converj plug-in concept as the ELR, it mentioned that it would launch a concept the following day at the Concours d'Elegance Pebble Beach. If you read it quickly, it appeared the concept was going to be the next version of the ELR, since the entire press release save for the last paragraph was about the ELR. But if you read a little closer, Cadillac simply said: "Cadillac will reveal another new concept car on Thursday, Aug. 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance."

The new concept isn't the next iteration of its plug-in, but a classicly styled convertible that it calls the Ciel.

Nissan Sells Out Its Japanese Brethren

Nissan Sells Out Its Japanese Brethren test 1-1

Ordinarily, in the wake of great tragedy comes great solidarity. When a nation is hit by a disaster of natural or manmade origin, it bands together, pulls itself up and gets back on track. Rivals become allies and enemies turn friends in light of the greater struggles facing them.

But one automaker has chosen to abandon its country mates as they continue to struggle with production issues stemming from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami of earlier this year. In a new commercial, Nissan basically sells out Toyota, Honda and other Japanese brands in saying that it is the first to be officially back on track.

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive: Great For Stealing Jewelry

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive test 2

BMW has a new video featuring its futuristic Vision ConnectedDrive concept hitting the roads. The video centers around a rather smug Romeo that uses his ConnectedDrive to help him steal a little something for his lass in the waiting. Frankly, it's a stupid video. But it's an awesome car, so, therefore, worth a watch.

BMW launched its Vision ConnectedDrive concept back at the Geneva Motor Show. Unlike most concept cars that are pretty hardware-focused, BMW was focused more on the road and environment surrounding the car. The ConnectedDrive system features all types of technologies designed to make driving easier, safer, smarter and more enjoyable.

Virtual Tour Of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (Video)

Virtual Tour Of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi test 2

If you're a huge sports car nut, chances are you love (or at least like a teensie bit) Ferraris. Who doesn't love those shiny, red, powerful stallions? Unfortunately, chances also point to the fact that you probably won't be visiting the ultimate Ferrari theme park—Abu Dhabi's Ferrari World—anytime soon. Now that's not true of everyone, but it can be a little difficult to plan a trip halfway around the world just to get your kicks at an adult theme park—what with so many places to see, and so little time and/or money to visit.

Luckily for you, we live in the age where we can travel around the world from the comfort of a desk chair. If you plan a trip to Abu Dhabi, you may want to skip this post and wait for the real thing. If, like me, you don't, read on and enjoy a virtual tour of the park.

Tons Of Epic Hollywood Hooning In Ken Block's Gymkhana Four (Video)

Gymkhana Four: The Hollywood Megamercial test 2

"Gymkhana Four: The Hollywood Megamercial" featuring professional racer and hooning master Ken Block and his turbocharged 2.0-liter Ford Fiesta (capable of up to 600 horsepower and 655 lb-ft of torque!) was released yesterday.

Now, I considered attempting to answer some potential questions (i.e. what is hooning? who is Ken Block? what is Gymkhana?), but you'd probably get a better understanding by just watching the video.

And trust me, you'll definitely want to watch this!

The New Dodge Durango Calls Out Ford's Explorer (Video)

The Dodge Durango Calls Out Ford's Explorer test 2

After being away for two years, the Durango has re-emerged with a new design, improved performance and some witty commercials to let everyone know that it's back and better than ever. Two in particular are sure to grab the attention of domestic rival Ford. Commercials "Ultimate" and "Responsibility" feature the Dodge SUV utterly shaming the Explorer. And Dodge doesn't stop there. Another ("Long Lost Performance") laments the lack of “S” in today’s SUVs and even mocks "the kind of cars people are making" and "the kind people are buying".

Dodge may be stepping on some toes with these commercials (and enjoying every second of it), but they're also trying to reignite America's love for sport utility vehicles despite rising fuel prices and many other economic uncertainties.

Video: Polish Supercar Gets Down to Business

Polish Supercar Gets Down to Business test 2

About two months ago, we reported with much shock that Poland has its very own supercar—okay, perhaps "very own" is too strong, since the styling is inspired by [ripped off] Lamborghini, and its engine is all- American. Still, though the eastern European nation that finds itself at more than its share of bad jokes has a supercar that it can call its own.

Since that unveil, we've been itching (or not really thinking about) how this car performs. Question [or lack thereof] answered.
