Most Awesome Traffic Back-Up Ever! (Video)

On: Thu, Nov 3, 2011 at 9:06AM | By: Chris Weiss

Most Awesome Traffic Back-Up Ever test 2

You're driving along the freeway or a country road when you suddenly catch a glimpse of red, black, yellow... whatever. That's no ordinary Chevy or Honda. Hell, it doesn't even look like a Mustang, Corvette, or other everyday sports car. No, that's something special. It's lower than any other car on the road, has some major curves, and doesn't look like any type of car you've ever seen. You slow down to a crawl and try not to gawk too obviously when the car in question passes. Whether it’s a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, or something else, seeing a supercar like that can make your entire day—because it's not every day that you see one.

Given that logic, it's not every lifetime that you see more than a hundred supercars in one massive traffic jam. But today's that day.

Motor Trend Crowns Evoque 'SUV Of The Year' test 2

Motor Trend has recently announced that the brand-new 2012 Range Rover Evoque has received the company’s coveted designation as Sport/Utility of the Year. To those in the know, the Evoque’s sudden popularity will come as no surprise. We’re talking about a completely new SUV design featuring the smallest, lightest, and most fuel efficient Range Rover tech ever sent into mass production. And, to compound this latest Range Rover’s victory points, the Evoque is priced very competitively within the small luxury SUV market—making this a vehicle which is sure to stimulate some kind of enthusiastic response.

Since time immemorial the good folks at Motor Trend have arduously tested new vehicles in the pursuit of finding the best of the best. In order to win, candidates for Motor Trend’s analysis must achieve high scores under six criteria: advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value, and performance of intended function.

Audi E-tron Spyder Out In The California Sun (Video)

Audi E-tron Spyder Out In The California Sun test 2

If you had to scout the perfect location for filming a plug-in sports convertible, it would most certainly be California. Not only is the Golden State a permanent launch pad for all cars electric, it's a sunny state with beautiful vistas of all kinds—kind of the ultimate spot to take an open-top e-roadster. And if you had to select a spot within the large state of California, you couldn't do much better than Malibu, a scenic coastal utopia.

Well, Audi follows that very logic and recently released a video of the e-tron Spyder tackling the coastal hillsides of Malibu.

Audi Flashes 2013 A4 Models, Including Allroad And S4

2013 Audi Allroad test 2

With a new BMW 3 Series headed to market, Audi has chosen an ideal time to launch a modernized lineup for the currently aging set of A4 models. Expect big changes to overall design and powertrains coming in the summer of 2012, listed as 2013 models, when the next wave of all-new Audi A4s comes to fruition.

From a distance the latest A4 looks very similar to previous generations. However, perusing the pictures, it’s easy to appreciate just how dramatic this redesign will actually be. The front fascia, bumpers, hood, headlights, accent lines, and overall shape have been modernized. The one characteristic that harks to Audi’s past, and may also have the effect of lulling viewers into a false sense of out-datedness, is the vehicle’s stance. The 2013 Audi A4s remain squat, sturdy-looking vehicles.

SSC Tuatara Gear Ratio Testing Video, 0-To-200 MPH In Under 16 Seconds

SSC Tuatara Gear Ratio Testing test 2

Remember the SSC Tuatara? Of course you do. How do you forget a 1,350-hp hypercar with a completely new, sexy Castriotta design and world speed record intentions? You don't. But in case you did, a new video is here to remind you about this awesome supercar.

SSC was out testing gear ratios for its latest car on an Ultimate Aero prototype. As is the company's M.O., it wasn't on any fancy track but on a piece of public road (Shelby's last car, the Ultimate Aero TT, broke the world speed record on a piece of Washington highway).

Chevy Sonic Goes Airborn And Breaks New Ground

Chevy Sonic Goes Airborn And Breaks New Ground test 2

The Chevy Sonic is a tiny hatchback that starts around $14,650. Given its inexpensive, all-American, small-car appeal, there's a good chance that we'll be seeing plenty of these on roadways. But not before we see a few of them in the air.

In an ad campaign that it calls "Let's Do This", Chevy has been tossing the Sonic out of planes, launching it off cranes, and putting it at the forefront of other off-the-wall firsts.

I first saw a headline about Chevy sending the Sonic on a skydiving mission, and thought: 'Eh. Publicity stunt, whatever.' But then I came across another story about the Sonic bungee jumping and realized we have more than just a single publicity stunt, we have a full blown auto-adrenaline campaign. And that's just interesting enough to get a little Autoshopper attention.

All-New S60, Most Dynamic Volvo Ever?

On: Tue, Oct 25, 2011 at 12:58PM | By: Chris Salamone

All-New Volvo S60 test 2

“Dynamic” is one of these advertising words that incorporate lots of different meanings conveniently into one fancy sounding concept. But when Volvo says the all-new 2012 S60 is “the most dynamic Volvo ever”, suddenly a word without a concise definition becomes a bit clearer. The S60 is a car with a range of skills, a range of driving characteristics, and most certainly a flashy new exterior. By all accounts, the 2012 model is faster, more efficient, and better looking than the outgoing model, thus making this latest redesign a Volvo with many powerful attributes.

For starters, the 2012 S60 is best-in-class within a few different luxury sedan categories. The T5 model achieves an estimated 30 mpg and yet delivers a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds. Also, Volvo provides best-in-class coverage with a 5-year/50,000-mile warranty on all components (maintenance, wear & tear, roadside assistance, etc.). Like previous models, this newest S60 comes with two chassis settings (instead of three) for driver comfort and optimum handling.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Holy Van Commercials, Ya Dig?

Custom VW Van test 2

From the A-Team to Scooby Doo, no vehicle is more controversial, yet respected, than the van. They come in many different shapes in sizes, ranging from the Mazda 5 to those monster commercial conversion vans over at Sportsmobile. So diverse are these vans, that a determined rundown of all the individual makes and models would create a list as colorful and ongoing as Herman Cain’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. Instead, we’ll focus on the most important aspect of vanenvy: awesome ads.

Prepare for some of the greatest van commercials of all time.

The Case For Edmunds' Parody-DocuDrama Review

2012 Jeep Wrangler test 2

“Finding water is the first priority when trying to survive in the desert, but nature provides everything you need… if you know where to find it,” said Mike Monticello from Edmunds.com as he pulled open a seemingly abandoned Jeep Wrangler’s trunk hatch filled with water and Doritos. When trying to escape the wilderness, sometimes you get lucky and find civilization. Other times, a fellow adventurer saves you from disaster. And other, less frequent, times you find a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara stocked with delicious snacks and a handy set of keys—just waiting for a quick test review.

It just so happens that Road Test Editor Mike Monticello found himself without a functioning vehicle after several days in the Mojave Desert. To make matters worse, he was completely out of food, tired, and could self-rescue only on foot. And then, seemingly without warning, he stumbled upon Option 3.

Another Anonymous Supercar: Genty Akylone

Another Anonymous Supercar: Genty Akylone test 2

Lately we've been covering about as much vaporware from random upstarts as we have legitimate supercars. In the former category, we have things like the Rimac Concept One, Transtar Racing Dagger GT, and Joss JP1.  In the latter, we have the actual supercars from established brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Pagani. The latter we know will get built and hit the market, while the former we half expect to disappear into the void of Internet buzz-that-once-was.

Still, it's hard not to be a little intrigued by the promise of a hot new supercar. So we'll tell you all about the Genty Akylone even if we're not sure that anyone will ever buy one.

Latest Russian Military Hovercraft [Insert Dolph Lundgren Quip Here]

Russian Military Spec Christy 6143 test 2

A country famous for implementing the world’s largest military hovercraft, the SR-N4, has created a new hovering killing machine. Caught during the filming of an upcoming Russian movie, made by an appropriately-named studio ‘Lenfilm’, this newest Russian military-grade hovercraft makes short work of sand, mud, and even choppy surf. Fans of the soon-to-be Red Dawn remake won’t be disappointed to hear that Russia still values the heady stench of glory with their Christy 6143 hovercraft, designed specifically for Special Forces operations “of any complexity.”
