Another New Lamborghini: Gallardo Tricolore

On: Mon, Mar 14, 2011 at 4:20PM | By: Chris Weiss

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore test 2

The Lamborghini Gallardo is in a rather unenviable position. Not only is it the forgotten older brother of the brand-new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, but despite being older, it's still the baby brother in the Lamborghini hierachy. It's less powerful, less technologically advanced, less performance-oriented, less flashy, and just all around less attractive than the more exciting Aventador.

This is a new problem for the Gallardo. It's always been the 'baby Lambo', but when it was introduced in 2003, at least it was the newest, freshest car in Lamborghini's line. It's more modest price led it to become the most successful Lamborghini of all time, so it doesn't have much to prove, but it's still getting majorly overshadowed by the Aventador.

So Lamborghini has done what any good supercar maker would do: built a special edition Gallardo (likely a number of special edition Gallardos, but there's just the one for now) to restoke interest in its older model. And it hasn't wasted any time: the Gallardo Tricolore has been announced ahead of its official debut later this week.

Ram Outdoorsman, Hit or Miss?

On: Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 12:24PM | By: Chris Salamone

Ram Outdoorsman test 2

Regardless of how you feel about the new 2011 Ram Outdoorsman, the model’s exclusive two-tone paint job is just plain handsome. Yet, the truck offers few improvements over traditional RAM trucks other than added aesthetic details. Although the changes create a ruggedly unique-looking Ram, the question remains: are these improvements worth a few thousand dollars over the traditional ST and SLT models? Surprisingly, the Outdoorsman is actually not even close to the most expensive Ram model type; it rests two steps up from the lowest echelon—the Ram ST. So if you’re worried about having the nicest truck on the block, fear not, the Outdoorsman is strictly middle-class with a little panache allowing drivers to “celebrate the bond between man, truck, and nature.”

Bentley Details Ice Speed Record Special Edition

Bentley Details Ice Speed Record Special Edition test 1-1

Bentley recently smashed (its own) world speed record on ice with a 205.48 mph speed on a stretch of Baltic Sea ice off the coast of Finland. At the time, Crewe announced plans to celebrate its accomplishment with a special-edition Continental at the Geneva Motor Show. Getting a head start on the other debuts and announcements of the show, Bentley detailed the "Ice Speed Record" edition on the day before the official start of Geneva. The car is built on the old Continental Supersports platform, as opposed to the new Continental GT platform.

Morgan Threewheeler Priced From $40K

Morgan Threewheeler Priced From $40K test 1-1

Owning the most head-turning ride on the road at any given time now has an official price. $40,000 and up. That's the base price that British firm Morgan will charge for its revived Threewheeler, a streamlined convertible that brings back the badge after a 58-year absence. This is the type of car that will get people looking and honking in your direction. Not necessarily in a jealous way like a red supercar, but more in a "WTF is that thing" type of way. Is it a bike, is it a car, is it a garage-made DIYer?? Prepare for plenty of questions if this one's on your wish list.

Pictures Galore: Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition

Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition test 2

The Lexus LFA Nurburgring edition has been somewhat of a strange case. Lexus announced the car last March, and made several follow-up announcements about it. But they waited nearly a year to debut the package, something that they will finally get around to this week. And despite the follow-up announcements about the package, we've been working with the same handful of pictures since last March.

But, last week, Lexus finally got around to updating the pictures. And it didn't hold back, offering a full album of exterior, interior, and engine shots. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of the matte black LFA, but we do get plenty of the orange model.

Bentley Continental GT Sets World Speed Record on Ice

Bentley Continental GT Sets World Speed Record on Ice test 1-1

Well, here's a world record that I didn't even know they counted: world speed record on ice. And here's a car that I really wouldn't expect to own that record: a convertible Bentley Continental Supersports. But it does. Bentley announced a world record of 205.48 mph earlier this week. The Finland Traffic Police were on-hand to certify the speed and Guiness World Record officials ratified it. 205.5 mph on sheer ice sounds pretty terrifying, but makes for pretty nice bragging rights for Bentley.

Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition To Debut In Geneva

Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition To Debut In Geneva test 1-1

If you've been following the Lexus LFA, you might think that Lexus' special-edition, 50-run Nurburgring package made its public debut sometime last year. But if you've really been following the LFA closely, then you know that while Lexus announced the package and released a few photos nearly a year ago, it never actually brought the Nurburgring-spec LFA to an auto show for an official debut. Well, the company is finally making up for that, in announcing that the 2011 Geneva Motor Show will mark the official public debut of the suped-up special edition. Prepare to see some live pictures of the LFA under the intense lights of the showroom floor.

CEC Lexus LFA Tuned Edition

CEC Lexus LFA Tuned Edition test 1-1

The $375,000, 500-model Lexus LFA supercar just got even more exclusive. A lot more exclusive. That is if you don't mind paying a tuner to pimp out the interior and exterior without any performance upgrades.

American tuner Claus Ettensberger Corporation announced the highly uncreatively named LFA "Tuner Edition" this week. It will offer the package on just three of the 500 LFAs that Lexus plans to build, making it an ultra-exclusive, if not entirely exciting, tuner package.

Porsche Introduces 2012 Boxster S Black Edition

2012 Boxster S Black Edition test 2

Getting tired of minimally modified Porsche "special" editions yet? I sure am. But apparently Porsche (and presumably buyers) can't get enough. Because Porsche is planning yet another modified, limited run model. The recently announced 911 Black Edition gets a little brother in the the Boxster S Black Edition, bringing some engine and styling modifications to less than 1,000 Boxster S models.

Mercedes Benz Pulls the Covers Off Its Skeletal Anniversary Sculpture

Mercedes Benz Pulls the Covers Off Its Skeletal Anniversary Sculpture test 1-1

Mercedes-Benz threw itself a little birthday party over the weekend. The automobile was patented by Carl Benz 125 years ago as of Saturday, and Mercedes used the occassion to unveil a new, conceptual sculpture that hints at future design language. The piece is called Aesthetics 125.

In a ceremony in Stuttgart attended by such notables as German Chancellor  Dr. Angela Merkel and Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Stefan Mappus, Mercedes presented its Aesthetics 125. Far from an actual car model, the sculpture appears like the skeleton of a car and works to demonstrate that "Mercedes-Benz design is art." It does, however, showcase a few key components including a big, smiley grille, voluptuous curves in front, and back and a sloped, hatch-style roofline. Expect to see these elements worked into future Mercedes concepts and production models.

2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione Fetches $2.1 Million

2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione Fetches $2.1 Million test 1-1

The 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione made good on its promise to rein in over 2 million dollars at auction. It didn't quite make it to the estimated $2.5 million, but it came close, fetching a $2.09 million dollar price at auction last weekend. The FXX was the flagship of a private collection from the late Benny Caiola. The Ferrari led a pack of eight cars that topped million-dollar bids at the auction, and its $2.09 million selling price was the highest at the 2011 Scottsdale Auction Week.

David Gooding, president and founder of Gooding & Co., predicted that this would be but one example of strong auction sales this year, explaining: "Strong 2011 auction sales will result from an increasing demand for preservation-class quality cars." He was using last week's sale of a 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic and a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster as examples.
