Pagani Huayra To Make Its US Debut Next Year

On: Mon, Sep 24, 2012 at 3:03PM | By: Chris Weiss

Pagani Huayra To Make Its US Debut Next Year test 2

If Pagani had its way, it would already be selling its Huayra supercar in the United States. It planned to launch the car this year, but those best laid plans were foiled by a pesky, little government body called the NHTSA. Due to a problem with the lack of child-safe advanced airbags, the NHTSA sent Pagani back to engineering, delaying the launch of the Huayra. While "child safety" probably seemed like an odd concern in a 230-mph two-seat supercar that certainly won't be the chariot of choice for many soccer games or PTA meetings, Pagani had no choice but to obey and delay.

Wealthy Americans anxious to wrap their fingers around the Huayra's steering wheel won't have to wait much longer. Pagani announced this week that the Huayra will make it to market by the middle of next year.

The 1LE Is Back! The 1LE Is Back?

Camaro 1LE test 2

For those of us who grew up in the 1980's, there were plenty of fond memories.  TV shows that actually had actors and actresses, music that was memorable if nothing else, some of the best movies around, and fashion that was ... okay, well forget the fashion. Sadly, the 1980s were a time in which car manufacturers were still recovering from the gas crisis. As a result, the cars they produced were less engaging than, say, your average episode of Thundercats.

There were a few bright spots along the way -- presuming you were grading on a curve of course. One such example came along in 1989 when Chevy took their (then) venerable IROC Camaro and offered up an option package called 1LE. This RPO code provided a version of the Camaro that could compete in the SCCA Showroom Stock racing events. In 1989-1992 form, the 1LE package included upgraded brakes, shocks, suspension, driveshaft, fuel tank, as well as some weight reduction making Camaros with this package much more agile than your garden variety IROC-Z.

Bonhams Sells "V12 NUT" UK License Plate For Over $4k. What A Bargain!

Like cricket (the game) and Marmite (whatever the hell that is) there are just things they do in the UK that I can’t get a handle on. I always thought it was a production assistant goofing around with the more apt license plates you see on Top Gear’s test cars but no: people actually have to pay for those. A LOT. Like the four grand for “V12 NUT” Bonhams got recently.

And before you think this is an isolated incident—and/or skip to the fun "Top Five" lists I’ve painstakingly copied from another site—I provide you with a roster of offerings to be, um… offered at Barons’ “Annual British Heritage Auction & Other Classics” sale somewhere on the island today (September 17) (with plates offered in quotes and auction estimate averages in greenbacks):

[And I hate math more than you can imagine so appreciate what I did here, dang it!]

They are, as follows: “DB09 AML” [$8,315]; “9 BEN” [$34,880]; “Y12 FER” [$1,704]; “D8 GTS” [$3,448]; “W18 OND” [$2,434]; “EA51 CAR” [$1,866]; “V8 REG” [$3,488]. What, you don’t see the perfectly good reason why “9 BEN” should cost more than a new Camaro? Oh, silly American. Because, as the description reads [EXACTLY], “Pre 63 Bentley? Any The ultimate Bentley registration” of course!

Seems Even $250,000 Can't Buy Batman's Bottom-Shelf Ride

I’m not the best person to cover this—but you’re stuck with me so suck it up—but this Batmobile is TERRIBLE, and the fact that some sucker was willing to offer a cool quarter-mil for something that looks like it was cobbled together by a Hollywood prop shop filled with half-blind craftspeople who thought they were constructing a Cirque du Soleil stage prop is just…

*Whew.* Ok, now that that’s (somewhat) out of my system, let’s get back to this being the worst-looking Batmobile ever. [Yes, I know about that internally-lit one with MASSIVE fins, but at least that baby didn’t look like a busted-up and half-melted G.I. Joe Night Raven.]

Batmobiles start for me with the “Tumbler,” just as the films quite literally begin with Batman Begins (not least because there’s no CGI used on the latest Bat ride, even as it evolves in that continuing series, scale models or not).

But nobody’s selling those, so Auctions America had to make do…

Finally! An Auto Auction Lot That Comes With A Lifetime Mating-Prevention Guarantee!

Have a problem with getting too many women? I, being such a person, know what it’s like; they follow you everywhere, looking for any excuse to hop in your car and go…wherever.

This is why I’ve been considering replacing my eight-passenger 1989 Olds Custom Cruiser. If only I could find something that would not only seat one (and some groceries) and—most importantly—would instantly kill the mating instinct of the human female on sight.

As it turns out my ideal lust-killer’s been around since the 1980s: the Litestar Pulse. And if only I’d been at Auctions America’s Auburn Indiana sale last weekend—and been suffering from a tragic-yet-comical brain injury—I could’ve been the sad… I mean LUCKY guy who traded $22,000 actual American dollars for Lot 4052, a “1990 Reconstructed Pulse Litestar.”

Way to go, dude! No more girl-sourced cooties for you!

Willie Nelson's Former Band Bus Bombs At Auction

It would seem as though too much of the Red Headed Stranger has rubbed off his former tour bus as—in the face of a $60k-$80k auction estimate—the 1986-model-year coach “Me & Paul” pulled down just $29,250 at Auctions America’s Sept.1 Auburn, Indiana sale.

[Hopefully this buyer will want to hang onto their purchase as the seller of this bus paid $48,550 less than a year ago at a Toronto auction, giving themselves a quick $19,300 haircut.]

Anyhoo, this thing is everything you’d expect a hard-worn band-bus to be, excluding most of the hard-worn. Still, if it wasn’t for the Willie Nelson history—and perhaps the terrible murals it’s coated in—this could easily be the crap-hauler for any C-level wannabe band.

Then again, maybe now it is…

Bentley To Show Sports Concept In Paris

Bentley Hunaudières test 2

Move over Continental GT and make room for Bentley's latest. Bentley is reportedly preparing an all-new one-off sports car concept for the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September. The car is being billed as the sportiest model it's shown in more than a decade.

Car & Driver reports that a one-off sports concept will debut within a month's time. The magazine describes the new concept as the "sportiest vehicle the brand has shown since the 1999 Bentley Hunaudières," which was built on a Lamborghini platform and powered by a W-16 engine. Looking at those specs, perhaps the new car will utilize the Aventador's composite tub and Bugatti's 1,000-hp W-16 engine.

All new, one of a kind McLaren X-1

McLaren X-1 test 2

Nearly every car fan is familiar with the McLaren F1, one of the fastest, most iconic supercars of modern times. Now it's time to familiarize ourselves with the McLaren X-1. Not quite as fast or sexy as the F1, but even rarer, and arguably more memorable, the X-1 is a one-of-a-kind model recently revealed by McLaren Special Operations.

McLaren's Special OPs is the branch responsible for bespoke projects and customizations. McLaren announced the division at last year's Concours d'Elegance Pebble Beach event. This year, it showed the latest design.

Fiat's On The Right Track With The Abarth 695 Maserati Edition

Fiat Abarth 695 Maserati Edition test 2

Plenty of automakers come out with "special" editions of cars to help revive interest and temporarily boost sales based on essentially a novelty-inspired purchase. Oftentimes, these specialty cars come with fancy paint jobs, lots of useless body cladding, lots of badges, but not much in the way of actual tangible improvements. There are of course, exceptions to every rule -- enter the Fiat Abarth 695 Maserati Edition. Although we have not been shy about our lackluster excitement about the Charlie Sheen-backed Fiat 500 over the last few months, it seems that Fiat is back at it again with an updated version of its sporty little go kart. But the big question is: Is the Maserati Edition actually an upgrade worth talking about?

Quartet Of Classic Ferraris Coming To Pebble Beach Auction

Quartet Of Classic Ferraris Coming To Pebble Beach Auction test 2

Each summer, the auto shows that fill out the rest of the calendar year take a vacation, and Concours d'Elegance events take over as the place for auto exhibition and excitement. The events showcase exotic and classic cars and include auction elements for those looking to add something exotic, classic or rare to their collections. This year, the Concours Pebble Beach event brings the opportunity to own four rare Ferraris from generations gone by.

The 2012 Gooding & Company Pebble Beach Auction will include four Prancing Horse classics expected to pull in a combined $20 million. The cars are all part of the collection of the late Sherman M. Wolf.

New BMW Zagato Model Coming To Pebble Beach

New BMW Zagato Model Coming To Pebble Beach test 2

It was just a few months ago that BMW and Zagato teamed up to wow the crowds at the Concorso d'Eleganza Ville d'Este. The BMW Zagato Coupe was a sharp, curvy fastback that may or may not make it to production. And it may or may not be joined in production by a second BMW-Zagato collaboration. The partners have another vehicle to show, and it's coming later this week.

"Making its world debut late in the week will be a new BMW Zagato concept, the second collaboration between these two legendary car companies," BMW says in an announcement previewing its appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance event.
