What does the serious Shelby collector do once he’s scratched all the usual itches? Cobras? You’ve got at least one each of the 260s, 289s, 427s, and 428s. Mustangs? You’ve got a garage full of G.T. 350s of every stripe (including at least one real-deal “R”) and a field full of G.T. 500s, open and shut, “KR” and not. Heck, you’ve even got the Holy Grail of Shelbys in your stable, a one-of-nearly-none Cobra Daytona Coupe.

Well, my friend, as Mecum’s recent auction in Anaheim shows, there’s a whole ‘nother volume in the Encyclopedia of Shelby, and—if you act right now—you can build yet another collection of that wily Texan’s wares for a relative song.

Well, that, and a MUCH bigger building…

Haunted Highways: A Series Exploring The Ghosts of Cars Gone By (Quickly)

Haunted Highways: A Series Exploring The Ghosts of Cars Gone By (Quickly) test 1-1

In the course of automotive history, there have been thousands of cars that have elicited almost as many emotions from us. Some cars, like the Edsel or the Pontiac Aztek, make us cringe and wonder if the best thing those designers ever created was their resume. Then, on the opposite end of the spectrum, are the cars that we simply love instantly like the Tri-Five Chevrolets or the first generation Thunderbird. Then there are cars that simply blow our minds with their combination of speed and beauty. Cars that blend the perfect mix of power, and esthetic appeal are few and far between, but when they do come along, they ingrain their images in our memories forever. One of the best examples of these cars is the very first McLauren F1 created by Ameritech.

Toyota Ending FJ Cruiser Production With Ultimate Edition test 1-1

As so often happens, some good news has surfaced with some bad news. Bad News: Toyota announced last week that it plans to end production of the FJ Cruiser, one of the few remaining hardcore off-roaders on the market and a natural alternative to a Jeep Wrangler, at the end of the 2014 model year. Good News: Prior to towing it out into the sunset, Toyota is offering the extra-rugged Trail Teams Ultimate Edition, which it calls " toughest and most capable FJ ever." It introduced the special edition at the SEMA Show.

Toyota's FV2: Mood Ring Meets Segway

Toyota's FV2: Mood Ring Meets Segway test 1-1

So, you’re waiting at a stop light and you glance into the car next to you. The guy in the other car is obviously angry. He’s got a grimace that goes on for days and the veins in his forehead are visibly pounding even from your vantage point. When the light turns green you drive slightly more defensively until he turns off the road. What if your car could read your mood? What if your car could read your mood and broadcast this information to other drivers? What if it changed color in response? It sounds like something from a movie but this is just the start of what a new vehicle from Toyota can do.

Jeep Adds a Little Chill With 2014 Wrangler Polar Edition test 1-1

Winter is coming a little early, at least in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Jeep introduced a Polar Edition package for the 2013 Wrangler last week, following up on past packages with wintry themes like the Wrangler Arctic. The winter-ready package gets some traction enhancements, along with frosty styling cues.

Volkswagen XL1 To Cost 110,000 Euros in Germany

Volkswagen XL1 To Cost 110,000 Euros in Germany test 1-1

The Volkswagen XL1 is the first in a new breed of supercars, a breed designed not for exotic looks, fast speeds and world records, but for driving clean and cutting your carbon footprint. Volkswagen stripped the cap off its R&D budget and threw money at designing a so-called one-liter car, reaching new heights in efficiency and design.

But such a supercar presents a dilemma: While it's easy enough to recoup supercar-level R&D investments by selling super-fast, exotic cars to multimillionaires, it might be less easy to recoup costs on a car that's cutting-edge technology is invested in low weight and light emissions. VW is going to try, however, announcing a six-figure price tag in its home market.

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster Terrorizes Streets test 1-1

When you build some of the world's most lusted-after exotic cars, the only one really qualified to surprise you with a birthday present is you. Lamborghini has been treating itself to a 50th birthday year filled with truly outlandish presents that no one else could have possibly thought of. It began with the Veneno at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and while it seemed like it may never build something more extreme, a couple months later it did: the tri-pronged Egoista. Before its birthday year is up, it makes it a trio, introducing a roadster version of the Veneno.

The Volkswagen XL1 Makes an Appearance in the US

The Volkswagen XL1 Makes an Appearance in the US test 1-1

Arguably the most technologically advanced "mainstream" car that the world has ever seen, the XL1 represents Volkswagen's way of jumpstarting the green auto industry with a no-expenses-spared approach. Dubbed as the world's most fuel efficient and aerodynamic car, the XL1 debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. In Germany, one needed only stop into the Frankfurt train station during the recent IAA international auto show to get a close-up look of the technological marvel, but Americans have had to have a bit more luck and timing. Until last week.

Chevrolet Unveils Firefighter & Black Ops Concepts Based On The 2014 Chevy Silverado Z71 test 1-1

As youngsters, many of us dreamed of becoming firemen when we grew up. That way we could save people from burning buildings, and cats from tall trees. Then there are some who refuse to grow up at all, choosing instead to spend all of their free time playing Black Ops, where they can save digital people from advancing armies and blood-thirsty zombies. If either of those describes you, then you'll be glad to know that Chevrolet has just built a truck specifically for you!

Equus Bass 770 is $253,000 Worth of Tire-shredding Awesomeness

Equus Bass 770 is $253,000 Worth of Tire-shredding Awesomeness test 1-1

The original muscle car recipe called for one part lightweight body and three parts big honkin' motor. The resulting concoction wasn't particularly 'smooth', but it would sure put a grin on your face (until you attempted to go around a curve, of course). At the time, the saying “The only thing that beats cubic inches is cubic dollars” was the Golden Rule. Then some gear head decided to combine the two, which resulted in an entirely new breed of monied muscle cars.

Today, there are many delightful choices in the exclusive world of bespoke speed machines. The latest comes to us from a little company in Michigan called Equus Automotive. It has a funny name—Equus Bass 770—and an eye-popping price tag—$250k. But it is a sight to behold.
