Five New Safety Features Your Car Will Have By 2020 test 1-1

Imagine the following: you’ve been on the road since 6 a.m., and it’s now well past sunset. You’ve got three more hours to go before you’re home and the last thing you want to do is stop. So you drain the cup at your side of its last lukewarm drops of coffee and turn the radio up a little louder. You think you’re wide awake, but actually your eyelids are drooping. A moment later they shut… “ALERT! ALERT! DRIVER FALLING ASLEEP!”

Is Dodge Headed the Way of Pontiac and Mercury? test 1-1

The American auto market was very different 15 years ago from what it is today. Not only were car buyers obsessed with big, refrigerator-sized SUVs, thanks to low gas prices and sensibilities that suggested that minivans and station wagons were the death of their self esteem, but there were a lot more American brands to choose from. Brands like Oldsmobile, Saturn, Mercury, and Pontiac were still alive and well (well, not necessarily well, but alive). GM and Ford streamlined their portfolios in the first decade of 2000s, eliminating all of those brands over time. Chrysler also cut its portfolio during that time, sending Plymouth to the junkyard next to Eagle. According to a new report, Dodge may be the next American brand on the chopping block.

Ultra-Efficient Volkswagen XL1 Hybrid May Inspire Sports Car test 1-1

Destined to become the world's most fuel efficient production car, the revolutionary Volkswagen XL1 is being prepared for a limited production run. Volkswagen last showed it at the Geneva Motor Show and plans to get it on the European market by the end of the year. While the United States is unlikely to get access to the 261-mpg ultralight cruiser, Volkswagen may use the car as the basis for a high-performance sports car that will make it here.

Electronic License Plates: Crime Preventer or Spy Tool?

Electronic License Plates test 2

Originally, state governments were formed to look out for the interests of its citizens. A couple of centuries later, state governments are looking to their citizens for the money to fund their massive operating budgets. Tickets, fees, and taxes just aren't enough to feed these bureaucratic machines, so new ways have to be explored. Like electronic license plates.

Toyota Prius May Get Sportier

Toyota NS4 concept test 2

Limited size, frumpy styling and great gas mileage - it's a formula that's been defining hybrids and electric cars since they've launched. No car better exemplifies this than the original lean, green machine, the Toyota Prius. The hybrid's styling is enough to draw snickers from strangers and jokes from friends, but its 50 mpg makes drivers plenty content to ignore any negativity from the peanut gallery.

Prius drivers of the future may get the best of both worlds. According to a Toyota executive, the next-generation Prius may trade in the small-hatch shape for something with more visual appeal.

Bugatti Thinking 1,600-HP, 288-MPH Veyron test 2

The Bugatti Veyron is already the fastest car in the world. It's also one of the most powerful and expensive. There's nary a bragging right left for the ultimate symbol of power and excess, but that isn't stopping Bugatti from developing an even more extreme version.

Automobile magazine reports that Bugatti is working on a 1,600-hp SuperVeyron. That's right - the car actually may be called the "SuperVeyron," not to be confused with the current Veyron Super Sport and its measly 1,200 ponies.

A Four-Door Lamborghini Aventador Coming Next Year? test 2

After years’ worth of sedan rumors, it's looking like Lamborghini's first four-door will come in a slightly different form. Instead of designing a new four-door model, like it did with the Estoque concept, Lamborghini will reportedly extend the wheelbase of its Aventador coupe and add a pair of clamshell doors.

CAR magazine reports that Lamborghini will unveil the Aventador GT at next year's Geneva Motor Show. It won't exactly be a proper sedan, but it will have two small jump seats in back, along with two small suicide doors. The GT will be planted on an extended wheelbase. To go along with its more road trip-friendly demeanor, the Aventador GT will also receive some softening in terms of styling - at least as much softening as you can get while still being a Lamborghini Aventador.

Restyled Nissan GT-R To Debut Next Month test 2

Nissan has a tendency of detailing next-generation GT-Rs in the fall. It did it with the 2012 version; it did it with the 2013 model; and it will do it again with the 2014 model. A new rumor indicates an early-November debut for the next year of Godzilla.

The rumor hails from the North American GT-R Owners Club and suggests that Nissan will reveal the new GT-R on November 2. The model will allegedly go on sale in Japan about two weeks after that debut.

Electric Kia Soul Rumors

Electric Kia Soul Rumors test 2

Kia will soon offer an electric version of its venerable urban box, the Soul, according to new reports this week. The electric Soul will follow the launch of the next generation gas version within the next two years.

What the electric vehicle market needs is more cars with style and, dare we say, it...soul. The Kia Soul certainly isn't for everyone, but compare it to the Mitsubishi i-Miev or Nissan Leaf, and all of the sudden, it doesn't look so bad.
