Alfa Romeo To Introduce Small, Sporty "4C GTA" in Geneva

Alfa Romeo To Introduce Small, Sporty "4C GTA" in Geneva test 1-1

The 450-hp 8C Competizione was a truly beautiful, exotic car. But with a limited, 500-model production, it didn't exactly help keep Alfa's head above water during its production run in 2007/2008. Alfa wasn't earning a profit then and it's not earning a profit now. And in the midst of constant sale rumors, the Italian automaker needs a new game plan.

Rumors indicate that part of Alfa's new game plan will look a lot like the 8C, only smaller and much less expensive. The Italian marquee is reportedly planning on bringing a 4C GTA concept to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Volkswagen Planning 7-Concept Blitz In Geneva?

Volkswagen Planning 7-Concept Blitz In Geneva? test 1-1

It seems that the sheer volume of concept cars presented at any given motor show has become a measure of oneupmanship. Lotus set the bar at the Paris Motor Show last fall, fleshing out a new direction with six concept cars. Late last year, word came that a rather nominal player--Russian supercar manufacturer Marussia--will overshadow that Paris appearance with a seven-concept dais at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. And now it appears that Volkswagen has seven-concept show plans of its own, and it will beat Marussia to the punch, unveiling its concepts at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Of course the comparison between Volkswagen and Marussia or Lotus isn't exactly a fair one, as the former relates to an entire auto group--one of the world's largest. Rather than single-brand concepts, VW's debuts will be spread across its portfolio of brands with only two expected from Volkswagen itself. Still, though, seven concepts is an impressive tally.

World Car Nominees Announced test 1-1

Looking past Geneva, the 2011 New York Auto Show will take place in April. At the show, the World Car of the Year honors will be awarded to the best green car, best performance car, and best overall car in the world. The field will get narrower in Geneva, but nominees for each category were announced this week, providing a look at which cars will be vying for the prestigious titles.

The Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf will once again be competing, this time for World Green Car of the Year. Chevy has been trouncing the Leaf here in the U.S., sweeping major awards like the Motor Trend Car of the Year, Green Journal Green Car of the Year, and North American Car of the Year. The Leaf, on the other hand, has a wider footprint and has had more success in Europe, winning awards like the European Car of the Year.

Chevy To Debut Cruze Hatchback At Geneva test 1-1

The Chevy Cruze has stood in the shadow of the Volt, but at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, it will get some spotlight of its own. Chevy announced that it will debut the production version of the Cruze hatchback at next month's show. The production model will look a lot like the concept version shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last September.

For now, the Cruze hatch will launch as a global vehicle, and Chevy has not yet committed to bringing it here to North America. According to reports, the question of the car's availability here is still up in the air.

Volvo V60 Diesel-Electric To Debut In Geneva, Hit Market In 2012 test 1-1

If you want to limit your carbon footprint as much as possible, without any regard to traveling distances, you get an electric vehicle. If you want to combine a greener drive with a car that's versatile enough for the real world, you get a plug-in hybrid. And if you want the market's best combination of clean driving and range, you look for a diesel-electric hybrid.

Volvo will soon offer its own diesel-electric, a car that it's calling a market first. The V60 Plug-In Hybrid is scheduled for sale next year and will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Mach 7 Falcon; The Latest American-Made Supercar test 1-1

The U S of A is really set to take a bigger role in the supercar market. Once relegated to small, European automakers, companies like Shelby Supercars and TranStar Racing have given  Americans supercars all their own. The latest company to debut a car of super proporsions is Holly, Michigan-based Mach7 Motorsports. In a rather small, un-buzzy appearance, the company debuted the 640-hp, 15-model Falcon at the Detroit Motor Show last month.

Detroit Auto Show: Thumbs up or Thumbs Down, Part II test 1-1

As we bid a fond farewell to the North American International Auto Show, we have a final chance to look back on the hits and misses of the annual presentation. A lot of the buzz around Detroit was “Could this be the year of the big auto comeback?” Many companies are poised to capitalize on positive economic indicators. They’re also feeding the consumer appetite for more fuel-efficient models that don’t skimp on the luxury. Here are some more thumbs up and thumbs down in no particular order.

Lamborghini Updates Its Other Car With The Gallardo Bicolore

Lamborghini Updates Its Other Car With The Gallardo Bicolore test 1-1

The world's attention may be focused on the Lamborghini Aventador and the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, but there's another winter motor show going on right now, and there's another Lamborghini showing its stuff. Lamborghini presented a special edition it calls the 2011 Gallardo LP560-4 Bicolore at the Qatar Motor Show.

Lamborghini hasn't done anything to upgrade the LP560-4's capability; it leaves the 560-hp 5.2 liter engine, e-gear transmission, and AWD layout untouched. Instead, Lambo focuses on the look of the car, and predictably, considering the name, presents a two-colored car with a distinctive look all its own. The cabin exterior comes in one color: black, while the lower half of the body comes in a selection of colors including giallomidas (yellow), arancio borealis (orange), grigiotelesto (grey), biancomonocerus (white), and blucaelum (blue). 15-spoke aluminum-alloy titanium grey wheels round out the exterior.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Gets Slight Upgrade With 'S' Model

Aston Martin V8 Vantage S test 2

The lil' Aston Martin Vantage has just gotten a little bigger. Aston Martin introduced the V8 Vantage S today, a model that is a little more powerful, agile, and quick, thanks to a few key upgrades. If you demand the utmost performance, the V8 Vantage S may be the Aston for you.

The S variant gets 10 extra horses over the standard V8 Vantage, pulling out of the garage with a 430-hp 4.7-liter V8 engine. That engine also benefits from a new Sportshift II seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission that Aston claims cuts shift times by 20 percent. While Aston didn't specify, the new transmission is expected to improve upon the V8 Vantage's 14/20 mpg EPA rating. It also cuts about 52 lbs. off the total weight of the car, contributing to the S model's 66-lb. loss.

Toyota Teases FT-86 II Prior To Geneva

Toyota FT-86 II test 2

Subaru won't be the only automaker showing off a sports coupe derived from its team-up with Toyota. Toyota teased its next FT-86 concept and said that it will unveil the second version of its rear-wheel-drive sports coupe at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. Subaru will also show its own version of the sports coupe for the first time at the show.

The FT-86 II may still be a concept, but Toyota hinted that it will be close, if not identical, to the ultimate production version, stating that it will be "the clearest indication yet of the final design for Toyota's next sports car."

Fully Official: Pagani Unveils The Huayra

Fully Official: Pagani Unveils The Huayra test 1-1

Geneva may be more than a month away, but thanks in part to a leak, Pagani has revealed the Huayra. Instead of having to sit through a dull, unrevealing fifth teaser video, we now have full details and crisp, clean pictures of the supercar. And it looks like a million bucks—as well it should, because it will cost even more.

Pagani was in the middle of a rather slow, uncompelling teaser campaign when a few leaked images from Car magazine and CarsUK hit the Web and completely overshadowed the release of the fourth (of five) teaser video last Friday. We knew it was only a matter of time before Pagani salvaged what was left of its climactic reveal and came clean.
