Subaru Will Show BRZ In LA... Sort Of

Subaru Will Show BRZ In LA... Sort Of test 2

For months, we've been saying that Subaru will debut its BRZ sports car at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Turns out that's both true and false, mostly true. Subaru will finally can the whole plexiglass act at the LA Motor Show in November. It will show an actual concept version of the BRZ... but that version won't look anything like the production version.

According to Car and Driver, Subaru will finally give us a proper concept car version of the BRZ in LA. But, because of an agreement between Subaru and Toyota that requires them to wait until Tokyo to reveal the production version of their respective cars, Subaru's concept won't look anything like the production version.

That also means that all of these increasingly tiresome FT-86 concepts from Toyota haven't been all that real either. We expect the car to lose its facial scars and exaggerated curves in production.

Kia Leaning Toward GT Production test 2

According to indications and ruminations, Kia has a hankering to develop a sports car. The GT concept debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show was supposed to be the first of two sports car concepts, the second of which was rumored for a Detroit Auto Show debut. Well, it appears Kia is already leaning toward GT production, even before having introduced its second possible concept.

Maybach 125 Birthday Edition

Maybach 125 Birthday Edition test 2

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz, and, by extension, the modern automobile itself. In 1886, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz each crafted a version of an automobile with internal combustion engine, paving the way to the automobile transportation era that we still enjoy today. Another prominent German player at the time was Willhelm Maybach.

Fast forward to 2011, and all those players are united under Daimler AG. And Mercedes has spent much of this year celebrating its quasquicentennial with special editions and concepts. The latest is a Maybach one-off unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Rimac Shows Us What 2,800 lb-ft Of Electric Torque Is All About test 2

After a few teasers, Rimac has officially presented its Concept One at the Frankfurt Motor Show. We're not holding our breath for a production version of this 1,000-HP, 200-MPH electric supercar, but we must say: Rimac knows how to make a fine-looking automobile.

VW Jetta Hybrid Coming To Detroit

VW Jetta Hybrid Coming To Detroit test 2

To state the painfully obvious: auto shows from here on out are bound to be characterized by—if not completely dominated by—hybrids, electrics, and other green concepts. At this year's Frankfurt Motor Show we've seen everything from tiny electric cars that could practically ride on the sidewalk to full-blown electrically powered supercars. And we've also started hearing rumors about the next-generation of auto-show-debuted green vehicles. First the Infiniti range-extending sports car. And now the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid.

Toyota FT-86 Concept Goes Orange

Toyota FT-86 Concept Goes Orange test 1-1

The saga of the Toyota-Subaru sports coupe team-up (aka Toyobaru) has been so comical it could almost be classified as a farce. Toyota has basically bombarded us with concepts to the point that we're sick of seeing the FT-86. Meanwhile, Subaru has given us not one, but two, clear car-skeletons that show little more than the powertrain and a basic shell of a car. Polar opposite takes on what's essentially the same project.

Well, while Subaru is fiddling around with a glorified model car, Toyota has yet another FT-86 to show in Frankfurt.

First Look: Eterniti Supercar

First Look: Eterniti Supercar test 2

The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show has been the breaking out party for Eterniti, a London-based, independent luxury car manufacturer. The company debuted at the Frankfurt show with the launch of its first model—the Hemera SUV. Since that car is basically just a tuned Porsche Cayenne, and I don't even like the Cayenne, I'm much more interested in Eterniti's second model—an unnamed supercar that it teased in sketch form.

Subaru Updates The BRZ In Frankfurt, But Not Really

Subaru Updates The BRZ In Frankfurt, But Not Really test 2

Another dramatically named Subaru BRZ concept that shows us a whole lot of nothing. Yay. While not quite as dramatically named as past iterations, the BRZ Prologue concept still carries far too heavy a name-to-information ratio. We still don't have an actual car and are left to close our eyes and visualize what this car will look like in "WR Blue Mica". But Subaru did release a few extra details this time around.

Land Rover DC100 Gets Buzz Cut In Frankfurt

Land Rover DC100 Gets Buzz Cut In Frankfurt test 2

I was pretty hard on the DC100 concept when I first saw it. Not so much because it's a terrible concept on its own, but because it's designed as a potential replacement for the Defender. In that role, the DC100 comes up way short. It's not a bad road-centric Rover, but it definitely doesn't convey the sense of adventure and off-road utility that a Defender should.

Well, the loss of a top helps, but doesn't exactly save, the DC100.

Volkswagen Introduces Buggy Up! Concept

Volkswagen Introduces Buggy Up! Concept test 2

The Land Rover DC100 Sport isn't the only airy off-roader to make an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In a rare instance where an automaker actually waited until the show to reveal a buzzy concept, Volkswagen dropped the Buggy Up! concept during the Frankfurt show.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale test 2

One of the last Lamborghini Gallardos that we're likely to see before Lambo's entry level coupe is replaced, the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale has made its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In addition to lots of extra consonants and vowels, the new Gallardo packs extra power and performance into a gorgeous red package.

Inspired by the race-spec Gallardos that compete in Lamborghini's Blancpain Super Trofeo series, the LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale (damn, that's a mouthful) packs a powerful punch in a street-legal package. You don't have to go far to realize that the new Gallardo gets 10 extra horses over the LP560-4—570 horses drawn from the 5.2-liter V-10 engine at 8,000 rpm. The car delivers 480 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm.
