Volvo Teases Its Sporty Side (Yes, Volvo Has a Sporty Side to Tease) test 1-1

Volvo has long been the brute workhorse of the car industry. The brand can be described by all kinds of positive adjectives—safe, durable, well built, etc.—all kinds of adjectives except "sporty," "hot" or "sexy." Well, "an imminent transformation is underway," and the Swedish automaker is intent on changing its unsexy safety car vibe, starting with a new concept car.

The Opel Monza Concept test 1-1

Automakers around the world have really opened up the flood gates. They're either teasing or full-on revealing the cars, trucks, and concepts that they plan to debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in about three weeks. The latest concept car to come to our attention is the Monza from GM brand Opel/Vauxhall (we'll just say Opel from here on out), a sporty shooting brake built atop an evolution of the Ampera (Chevy Volt) plug-in hybrid platform.

Toyota Hybrid-R test 2

Toyota is planning quite the offensive at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It will unveil a race-derived hybrid concept, while luxury brand Lexus will show a concept car of its own. It's saving the details for the show, but it has played a little game of tease-and-tell to whet our appetites.

The 500-HP Cadillac Elmiraj Appears test 1-1

Cadillac always seems to have a head-turning concept to reveal at Concours d'Elegance Pebble Beach. Two years ago, it was the Ciel roadster. This year, Cadillac kept the top on but lets its creativity out with a truly intriguing coupe it calls the Elmiraj. Hopefully, this car is a preview of the rumored flagship model.

Suzuki Teases Compact SUV Concept test 1-1

Suzuki is a badge that's easy to forget in the United States, thanks to its limited offerings and small presence. In fact, think Suzuki and you may very well think "ATVs and motorcycles" before you think "cars." The Japanese brand will be debuting a new concept car that could help it penetrate further into the growing crossover segment should it decide to build it.

Crossovers and "urban crossovers" have been pretty popular for concept cars over the past several auto shows. Suzuki calls its newest concept crossover the iV-4 and we'll see more of it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Goodwood Festival of Speed Eye Candy test 1-1

The summer is quiet on the international auto show front, but that doesn't mean there aren't great car events to be had. One of the most exciting is the U.K.'s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the world's largest motoring garden party, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this summer. The roar of engines forcing aluminum and carbon fiber up the famous Hillclimb has officially quieted, but this year's Goodwood Festival left a lot of lasting memories, including a number of very interesting sports car debuts.

Ford Boosting Hybrid Fuel Economy with Software Update test 1-1

Some of Ford’s hybrid models will soon be getting free software updates to help improve fuel economy. 2013 Ford Fusion, Ford C-Max, and Lincoln MKZ hybrids are the target of this software update in an effort to get actual MPG closer to what the EPA estimated mileage reads. The window stickers on of all these models states that they get 47 miles per gallon in highway and city driving—the actual fuel economy appears to be closer to 40 miles per gallon or less.
